As a Speech Pathologist, I can honestly say in my 17+ years of working,
I have never had a patient with a swallowing issue caused by yeast.
I believe you did the right thing in treating.
Do you think the mood swings may be related to a possible co-infection?
My swallowing issues are related to babesia.
My mood swings were bartonella.
Is your son on diflucan/fluconazole for yeast?
The yeast will pass.
If you didn't treat the Lyme, well....
We all know that Lyme won't just pass.
I would have had my children treated based on that WB and symptoms.
Yeast is the least of my concerns with both of my children being treated.
Hang in there. I think you are doing the best you can for your child.
That is all you can ever do.
Sending you positive thoughts and prayers.
Hope he is feeling better soon.
I hope you are too.
Hugs,
Geneal

How did the dr determine that you son has a major yeast problem?
If the symptoms improved on antibiotics i wouldnt suspect yeast. When I was having really bad yeast issues, the abx would just make my symptoms a lot worse, non of them ever improved until i stopped and treated the yeast, and then they went away.
I had swollowing problems and throat numbness that got better on abx, worse at first but then better.

I would definitely treat the yeast with diflucan or nystatin. Diflucan helps with the Lyme as well as it's an antimicrobial that some drs. have had success with.
Dr. C. in MO uses nystatin or diflucan as a preventive while patients are on abx so that yeast does not become a problem & asks patients to limit or eliminate refined sugars from the diet. You might ask your dr. if your son can go on diflucan (I suggest diflucan because it helps prevent yeast overgrowth on all systems - nystatin is for digestive yeast only) while he's on abx.
My heart goes out to you. My son is now 12 and we have been treating for 4 years. He will get better with continued treatment. Mood swings may be due to Herx reaction also. Hang in there.

Dr did muscle testing for yeast. this is something I personally believe in.
Dr also thinks he may have babesia-tested neg for it. but so do i and I have the symptoms (night sweating, rib pain).
He suggested diet changes and protbiotics to start. No perscriptions yet.
I'm nervous about diflucan b/c i know it can be toxic.
In addition, i am going to get him in to see my therapist. its amazing how much it has helped me get through my symptoms and cope. i'm hoping it will help him too. The last thing i want is for my child to be unhappy.

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.
"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."
Five Steps to Candida Elimination:
1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.
2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]
3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]
4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]
5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

I can appreciate the challanges of coping with the mood swings that a child with lyme can experience, as we have been going through it for many months now.
Don't beat yourself wondering if you should have treated. You can't change what has already been done, you can only go forward.
Yeast can do lots of nasty things, but not all of the things included in the symptoms that you mentioned (like trouble swollowing.)
When yeast was an issue for my child, the tell-tale sign was itching, and reddness in the private areas.
We upped the probiotics, the itching went away.
For our child at least, there has been no correlation between yeast and the mood swings.
Instead, we found that the worst of the mood swings would hit in the afternoon, when he was the most tired and not willing or able to nap, with the worst behavioral stuff hitting on a monthly cycle, just as many with lyme experience an increase of symptoms on a monthly cycle. (I call it his monthly lyme surge, MLS, not to be confused with PMS!!)
If your therapist is experienced in working with kids, then it doesn't hurt to explore this avenue. At the age of 7 1/2, art therapy or play therapy is more the norm.
What I think would be more useful is for you and your spouse to get support as parents of sick child. As you stated, the mood swings can rip a family apart, and it is vital for both parents to work as a supportive team as a child goes through this illness.
I don't know anyone locally that does therapy specifically with children that have Lyme, or families that are affected by lyme (If there is one out there, I'd love to know who it is!!)
For my husband and myself, what has helped us most is understanding that our child cannot control what is happening with his body and his mind.
We have done our best to teach him better ways to cope, WHEN HE IS ABLE TO HEAR THIS. I put that in caps because when your child is in the middle of a major mood swing, he is not able to hear or understand anything outside of what he is feeling.
Now for the words of encouragement, it does get better. We have seen our child progress through almost manic out of control states, to violent thoughts, to belligerent, and now he is at a place where he can be fragile (cries easily).
He still isn't 100%, but he is no longer out of control at times.
Back to Geneal's comment, co-infections, both babs and bart, can bring out the behavioral stuff with kids. We suspect bart with our child, and his response to specific medications supports that suspicion.
I hope this helps, and if you need to talk to a mom that has been through this, feel free to pm me.
Take care, and hugs for your little one. kp

dmbfan,
I won't get into the nitty gritty details of the medical issues because other folks' have addressed those.
I just want to say to you that you should NOT, I repeat, NOT feel guilty. You are being an alert, vigilante, caring Mother. This disease can go in another direction at the drop of a pin.
I took milk thistle and that made my eyese sell up like balloons. My mother takes artemisae and her eye flashes like a lightbulb for days.
We Lymies are VERY sensitive and I doubt even the most talented psychic in the world could predict how each med, regimen, step we take will effect us, good OR bad.
Yout take that GUILT off your worry list and pat yourself on the back, instead. You love your son and you'redoing everything possible to help him.

I would personally feel more guilty as a mother if I did nothing to help my child. I've learned the hard way with treating myself over the last 10 yrs.
Sometimes you make good decisions, sometimes you make bad decisions? To err is human.
There just isn't an easy answer to all the unanswered questions. We can just do the best we can, with info we have and be patient with healing.
It can take months or years to see progress in treatment. Adult or children.

Hi dmbfan, I'm so sorry that your son has lyme. No one wants to see their children suffer at all. It is hard enough for adults to get through the lyme protocol.
I understand the guilt that you feel, but you are doing the right thing.
I was a child who had lyme but back then they didn't know about it. I can tell you first hand that it is worse not to treat. I was at so many dr's trying to figure out what was wrong.
They finally had to settle with the diagnose as possibly having JRA. They told me to take asprin and push myself. lol
As for the mood swings, boy did I have those along with the rage. It was something I couldn't control. Normally, I was really a very kind and caring and sensative child but I felt this rage with in at times that was so deep. My poor parents. Scary that a little spirochete can do that to a person.
I remember the feeling and how it affected me and if you ever want to ask me any questions please ask away. I will also say a prayer for you son because it breaks my heart that children have to go through this.
