Hey I just got a PICC put in a week ago and started IV roc...
I was nervous too but it is not that bad at all ...
You can actually administer the treatments your self if you have an extension tube off your PICC...it could be difficult to do yourself with out that though
my sister is an RN and she lives with me so she helps out but it is not hard at all... just takes a few days to get used to....
a nurse or someone else that knows what they are doing has to clean it though...
good luck i hope it works out for you

My kids were on IV Rocephin. We infuses at home. A visiting nurse came to the house once a week to change the dressing and check for any problem.
I am not medically oriented, so I was hesitant at first, but had no real problem setting them up to infuse. (and I was sick with lyme and kind of a zombie). And they didn't have any problem with it all.
Best Wishes, kpa

The nurse came for the first infusion to show me how to do it. It was easy.
then they came once a week to change the dressing and take blood work when necessarry.
Keep it clean and try not to get it wet when in the shower. I would ask your infusion company if they have a plastic sleeve (with rubber at each end). these are best for the shower.
Just so you know rocephin can cause stones in the gallbladder so be vigiligant about if you are getting any symptoms. I think some people take a med to try to prevent the stones.

Good luck!!
But have we got a really l-o-n-g thread for you here in General-see "Reporting from the IV Line"
Rest assured -all survived and are doing well!

Hi!
Congratulations!
My home health care nurses came once a week for six months, to change by dressing and to sometimes pull my blood for testing.
Keep the PICC clean and dry. Look for redness or puffiness, as sopme have gotten infections--and those are very serious.
I infused myself with Rocephen 4 days a week, twice a day-- but that was what was prescribed for me. Rocephen must be kept refrigerated--even in transport.
Do you know about probiotics? IMPORTANT.
If you're a woman BE SURE that you are taking actigal (ursodiol) to help prevent gallstones.
Is the PICC in/going in your arm? Decide which arm. Then cut off the ribbing of a sock to use to keep your PICC line apparatus in place.
You have to keep it dry when taking a shower!
The best to you.
Over in medical, if you do a search (at the top of any page) you'll find lots of posts about IV Rocephen. I did real well! And the herxes are--ouch!--but afterwards I felt a little better. Those add up!
At first, my herxes happened every 4 weeks and even overlapped. Not every one has regular herxes.
If the PICC is in your upper arm, you can't lift more than five pounds or one gallon, with that arm, or the PICC line can move and not be effective.
