Recap of week 32 for group 1

Akinwolf

June2:

Monday-Me and Rocky about 2 miles today. Sure is getting hot down here, in the 80's.

June 4:

Close to 3 MILES today!

Had a really bad fatique day yesterday so no anything.

Made it up to Rocky by going further today.

Getting my cast off this afternoon so will try to hit the mall before my appointment.

June 6:

3 miles on Thursday and having to tap on Rocky's tail to get him moving on the home stretch. He's getting to tuckered out! Can you believe that? He's only 6 years old.

If he's out of shape it's my fault for him being so inactive. Hopefully me and the dog will get in better shape together.

That's my goal.

No walking today, have an appointment to have a infared sauna treatment done.

Andie:

June 2nd:

I guess I was a little too optimistic the last time I checked in...because now, I've got a lot of searing pain in my left leg, making it a challenge for me to walk across the room, much less walk a mile.

I am still at work but struggling.

Not sure what to do. Not sure what I can do. I see the acupuncturist on Wednesday, and I'm hoping that will give me some relief.

Bob

My update : sunday 3 miles,

monday thru friday 4 miles each day,

Saturday -- natural biophoton therapy -- I layed out in the sun for a couple of hours and 1 mile.

Cathy

June 3rd:

I'm going to have to put this walking on a back burner.

Took a pretty rough tumble yesterday and not sure if it was passing out, seizure or what.

I'm pretty banged up from whatever I did yesterday...so walking has to take a break for now.

Don alias Handy Man

Sounds like Don has purchased a fixer upper and will be tackling that for the next year or so. Plase take care of you Don. Big job.

KAM

Sunday am: walked into dog park and out OK

Sunday afternoon: walked in with heart beating rapidly. Had great deal of difficulty walking out.

Did not have harness on Rosie to help me.

Sunday: 30 to 40 min outing in power reclining power chair with leg up

Mon: 30 min to dog park this am via the car. Able to chat a little while at dog park. Back is hurting now...did not slouch and put my feet up while there but sat in a regular chair for about 10 min.

Mon pm: 30 min outing in power chair

Tues: 20 min outing in power chair

Tues: 1 hr outing in power chair

Tues: 30 min outing in power chair

Tues: 20 min outing in pc

Wed: 1 hr 30 min outing in power chair. A little tough on the brain but I di dOK.

Thurs: able to put dishes in dishwasher and take clean ones out. Very unusual for me. Think this is the first time since I moved here.

Also able to move some boxes out of bedroom and into hall.

Thurs: 1 hr outing in pc sitting upright the whole time. Focusing on keeping my shoulders back too and sitting up straight.

Thurs pm: 1 hr outing reclining in PC

Friday afternoon: 30 est outing in power chair, reclining.

Friday pm: 20 min est in power chair sitting upright.

30 min on feet in kitchen. Able to prepare dinner.

Sat am: 2hr outing in reclining power chair. 1hr traveling. 1hr attending The Wall Ceremony(sp?).

Note: getting up to charge power chair now. This is the most I have been able to get out of the house. Looking forward to Lou's total's.

Lou Lou (Was Lou, but now Lou Lou since Lou B has joined the group)

June 2: 1.5 miles for me today.
June 3: 1.5 miles for me.

June 4: OK, Bob . . . read this! 4 miles today! First time ever! Don't look over your shoulder. You might see me trying to catch you!

June 5: 1.5 miles for me today. And I did 10 minutes on the stationary bike.

Knee is aching today. Perhaps the 4 miles yesterday overdid it a bit . . . but I am still happy that I did the 4 miles. Major accomplishment!

June 6: 1.5 miles this morning. And an hour of weights.

EFT workshop this weekend. Don't think I will have a chance to get online until Sunday night (2 1/2 hour drive to the workshop site). I'll let you know if it was a wise choice to take the workshop when I get back.

Going to a festival tomorrow. Lots of walking in 90 degree+ weather. Looking forward to the festival but not the heat!

Hope everyone is well. And don't forget to send positive thoughts to Awesome Ali, Cathy, Andie and Just Don.

TuTu

Sunday: 1.5 miles
Monday: NO walking here today
Tuesday: I just got back from my 2.0 mile walk!
Thurs:
I managed to walk 2.0 miles today even though I had a cramp on the first lap... somewhere in my hip joint.

Stretched it out as best I could...Made it all the way, then when I got home it began to hurt again.

Maybe I really shouldn't do 2 miles at a time. But I'm determined to break my own record this week... again.

Saturday (6/7)

I walked only 1.0 mile today. My leg felt numb and tingly on the side of where I had hip/back pain this week.

Aggravating, since that's my "good side!" My sciatic troubles are on the left side!

So... I played it safe. GRRRRR!!

Recap of week 7 for group 2

Awesome Ali

June 1:

Today I rode for 45 min at 1 MPH, so I guess that is 3/4 mile. Rough day emotionally.

Also stood with help 8 times today.

June 2:

OK, I rode the t'cycle for 30 min and went 3/4 mile at half 1MPH and half 2 MPH.

Then I stood for 30 min in the standing frame. And last night I laid on my stomach for 30 min.

I am trying to lessen the time I am in the wheelchair sice my body wants to keep the shape of the w/c.

I'd look awful funny walking around with my knees and hips each at 90 degree angles. D'ya think?

June 4:

I am riding the t'cycle 30 min now so I don't get too tired. 1MPH for 15 min and 2 MPH for 15 min. Distance is about 3/4 mile.

Leaving to see Dr K next week. Hope everybody has a great week.

Note: Ali gets extra credit for taking care of Great Dane Business

Larkspur:

Sunday (6/1) - walked for 75 minutes.

Monday (6/2)

Well, I didn't "officially" go for a walk today, but I did about 3 hrs of errands by myself with lots of driving around and walking through stores and parking lots

1st time I've been out like that by myself in months! It's a new day

Wednesday (6/3) 2.2 miles for me

MTree (Was out of town this week. welcome back kiddo)

I walked at least a mile or more a day....
so lets just say at least 7 miles...for the week...and.....

stairs...stairs and more stairs....OMG

and I swam everyday...
we did a lot...and had a great time....
haven't been that active in months....

Tracy

Herxing since last Thursday night, so no walking so far this week.

Lou B

(Welcome Lou. Thought I would put you in this group. You'll just have to remember you started with week 7.....that is if you are counting)

Good to hear from you Cathy. I still am not walking either.

But, have found other ways to exercise the brain that I don't take for granted. [Smile]

Hope you are doing OK.

Commercial Break....

Lou Lou will be along to add up our individual and group totals.

Walk in's welcome.

You can keep your record however it works for you.

Either check in once a week like Bob does with your summary or daily or whenever you get a chance to exercise the brain or body or both.

Questions, comments, concerns? Clear as Mud?

Sunday am: 100 min outing via sitting upright in power chair to grocery store. A first for me. I think.

As I was traveling over it was rather warm for that early in the am.

I also thought I would much rather be walking in the cool, damp, quiet woods.

Cool breeze coming back if I was heading south which i was for the most part.

Also purchased some bags to keep things cold or frozen and hung them off the back of my power chair.

Was concerned how i was going to get the refrigerated items home. So, that worked out well.

But, need to choose between using my stamina to have food in the house or refuel the soul.

Must admit have food in the house is good for the soul too.

Cut shopping part short as I was running out of stamina and brain power, but got enough to last me if I am down for awhile after taking samento for tonight.

Also good to know I can get to grocery store if needed without the senior van.

Not sure how long it took me to get there. I think 40 min over and 40 min back...so what is that 20 min shopping??

Excedrin helped. Could not have done it without the excedrin and Rosie.

AT one point the brain wanted to just jump right out on a busy street with an island. My thinking is I wanted to go see the RV show in the parking lot across the street.

I would have found myself in the left hand turn lane in the busiest part of town.

Rosie helps me keep on track and focused when the brain is going.

REalized I was not doing well enough to browse the RV parking lot and needed to get off the busy street and onto a quiet, smooth one and get home.

That brain is a silly thing at times.

Sunday am: able to put dishes in dishwasher. About 10 min on feet. First week I have been able to keep the kitchen sink and counters clean by putting dirty dishes in dishwasher.

Something I did routinely before lyme. I am exhausted though and started to get off balance and had trouble with brain towards the end. Stamina is still not there yet.

Hi H/W/M Club,

I've started ... not for Lyme as I don't have it but for my heart ... and overall well being.

Doesn't matter what week it is and I'm not sure why I care ... is this a contest that ends after a specific number of weeks?

Today was a very busy day; headed down to church @ 7AM, read @ Mass, served as the Eucharistic Minister and cleaned up/batched the collections after Mass then headed for Festa Frianese to work all day ... got home @ 8PM exhausted. Determined not to put off starting, relaxed a while and started my routine.

Way too hot to walk outdoors here in North NJ during this heat wave (in addition to thunder storms rolling through), I stayed indoors.

2 miles on treadmill in 40 minutes, 15 minutes easy on rower, 3 miles on stationary bike in 15 minutes. I was going to do some free weights but I ran out-of-energy.

Tired now, going to bed.

G'night,

Hi all...

well, I did about 30 minutes of toning/strength training today...which was too much since I haven't done that in about 6 months.

Plus, I did this after I straightened the house for a couple hours this morning...I only made a slight dent btw [Smile]

then I went food shopping with my husband and thought "uh oh..."

Will I ever learn?!

Well, leave for Seattle tomorrow. Will fly by myself for the first time in 11 yrs of marriage. Connecting flight in Denver.

One thing having lyme sure does is up the threshold for courage, doesn't it?!

My daughter will meet me there to take me to Dr K appts. I'll be back Friday. Hope you all have a great week. Maybe I can follow it from Wa. Aliyah

Lou B...wow you really are a mover and groover. [Smile]

Nope...no contest. We are all turtles though and in for the long run. No rabbits here..except maybe Bob. HA!

Great to see all that you are doing. Good luck to you.

Larkspur...

I know you are most likely down today. But, that was pretty cool what you were able to do yesterday.

Ali,

Good luck on your flight. I think because you have done this before it will help. AT least you know what to expect.

And it is good your daughter will be meeting you.

Yep. Lyme is not for wimps. This doesn't mean we don't whimp out at times, but we are good at getting back up and brushing ourselves off.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Welcome back Lou Lou. [hi]

I don't know why but I just enjoy reading about all that every one is doing.

It is so encouraging. And so many different ways to move the body and the blood flow.

And 11 hours. When I was living in CA, if I were able to get out for 20 min in my power chair once a week that was a good week.

I need to be outdoors and am not an indoor person.

So, I am very happy to see the 11 hours. I knew i was out more last week than I have been in a long time.

Started samento last night and will continue with it each night.

So, might be slowing up a bit.

How was the information over the weekend?? Where do I need to start tapping?? Or do I have it totally wrong??

In sign language, you use the pointer fingers on either side of the mouth and swing them out and up while saying PAH!

Success!

2.75 miles for me today (30 minutes treadmill and 20 minutes elliptical machine)

kam -- the EFT class was very interesting. I know that you can learn this technique from reading about it, but you really see its uses and the benefits when you have an instructor and a classroom of students.

It is a tapping techinque, and the results were quite remarkable for people with phobias, anxiety or who were carrying anger or resentment towards someone else or about a situation. Some phobias were eliminated in around 15 minutes.

It would be beneficial to lymies who have anxiety, or depression, or are angry about being sick . . . the list never really ends. I am glad that I went. I will show the technique to my meditation group tonight.

Hope everyone is well.

Hi all. I am actually ok today (after my "over -do" yesterday) I will try to go for a walk later once it cools off a little here

I have seen some are interested in EFT - Dr. Mercola has pics and instructions on his website how to do it...

http://www.mercola.com/forms/eftcourse1.htm

of course, it appears he wants you to buy his video too, but there is a lot of basic free info about EFT in the above link

3 miles in 98% weather and you can peg for another mile tonight with the dogs. I also walked down and up 6 flights of stairs. More biophoton therapy while I was walking, I scared the neighborhood folk and took my shirt off. Of course the neighborhood folk comprised of birds, one deer and a couple of chipmunks. I got back to work and walked up the 6 flights, I knew to take a t-shirt and switched shirts after a few minutes. I was a little heated and am probably showing off a musky cologne. All in all, I really enjoyed every step, as I now really enjoy telling you about it. [Big Grin]

Thanks! Love the sign language thing! I tried it out!! [Big Grin]

LouLou, If you don't call LouB, LouB then we'll all be lost!!! [or am I the only one with no brain?]

Well, I got a late start. Wanted to go walking this a.m. but it was raining. So later I THOUGHT it was still raining, but it wasn't.

Checked the radar and saw it was on its way again. Got to my walking spot and it had started to rain.

I walked one mile in the rain. It didn't come down very heavy until the last lap.

Got my pedometer to work!!! It said I walked 1.30 miles, so now I'm confused. ( according to what my husband told me about the track, each lap is 1/4 mile .. I walked 4 laps. )

Does anybody know what a normal STRIDE is for someone 5'3" tall??

It asks for the stride and I couldn't figure out how to measure it. I guessed at 12" ... but maybe it's shorter than that??

Just a walkin' in the rain, walkin' in the rain!!!

Welcome LouB!!!! [hi]

I see your point, Tutu, about the Lou's. So I guess LouB and LouLou will work? Just trying to avoid any confusion if someone posts a "Lou said . . ." statement. I love having another Lou walker.

Gary Craig is the person who is given credit for promoting EFT. The person who taught my class has consulted with Gary Craig and teaches a modified (simplified) version. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to post the process here. I just didn't want to write the post if there is not interest. Or perhaps the EFT should be under another thread.

The EFT works even if the person doing it does not believe that it will work. And there have not been enough studies to show exactly why it works . . . it is enough to just know that, for whatever reason, it works.

So, if you are interested, I can write a post about it or perhaps PM you with the information. I am really glad that I took the workshop. It involved a good bit of money for the workshop and 5 hours of driving and an overnight stay in Pennsylvania . . . and I feel that the workshop was worth what I put into it.

We have a good bit of walking/exercise going on for so early in the week. Very encouraging. Keep up the good work!

Thanks... I've known LouB for 8 yrs now and you can't teach THIS old dog a new trick!! [lol]

I'm good with Lou or LouLou.. your choice.... or lou .. We need others to speak up here!!

I have the instructions on how to do EFT, just haven't done it yet.

I think you should post it in a different thread, where more will see it. Did it help you get rid of any phobias or cravings?

I was going to try it for food cravings... like SUGAR!!! [bonk]

Perhaps post the thread URL here.

This is the closest picture on the web that I can find to what I saw.

The guy I saw was not carrying anything but did have a cigarette in his hands.

he had the walk too. Right out of a movie set. He was the good, bad and ugly all rolled up in one.

On my afternoon outing, I saw an indian boy with long hair and western clothes.

He, too, looked like someone that stepped out of the movie set from the 1800's.

4 Reasons You Should Use Try Rowing Machine

First and foremost, rowing machines offer a workout with little impact on the joints. Therefore, they are something senior citizens can use.

I like rowing machine because the exercise is self-paced; I can row as hard or as easily as I like.

I am sure you can do the same. You glide back and forth on a seat as you pull back the pulleys in a traditional rowing fashion.

You can change the resistance and rowing speed according to your fitness level and ability.

Apart from that, vigorous rowing is one of the most effective calorie burners, potentially burning more than 800 calories per hour.

Last but not least, rowing is excellent for strengthening arm, back, shoulder and abdomen muscles.

Rowing machines are one of the few pieces of gym equipment that exercise many muscle groups.

If you want to build and tone your muscles, simply set your rowing machine up for grater resistance.

Kam - The healthy brain is visually gross looking. EEWWWWWWWWWW! Glad that I don't have to acually look at it!

I will do a separate EFT thread sometime this week, for those that are interested. I taught it to the meditation group last night with interesting results. Alot of negative emotions were dispelled - in about 15-20 minutes. Also, a fear of flying was overcome, but the true test will be when the person has to get on a plane.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Lou Lou,

I thought the same thing about the brain. It certainly doesn't look like a control center.

Good report from last night's class.

Tues am:

Water therapy. 1st of 8 Able to do 4 arm exercises, 4 legs exercises for 2 min each.

Then things started going down hill and I was used up.

(I think it was because I drove, walked in, sat down in waiting room, office staff were greeting each other for the day, person in waiting room, wanted to talk, put Rosie harness on in waiting room. Most of strength and brain power was used up while waiting to go into pool.)

Need to figure out a plan b. It works well when they get me right in. But, sitting and waiting even for 10 min does not work at this time.

Choices are to take senior van over and go in power chair.

Or go in power chair from home..that one is iffy...sometimes that is good and other times not so good.

DRive over and wait in car until they are ready for me and recline in car seat. Need to find a way to communicate this to them as walking and letting them know i am there and walking out is not energy and brain affective.

Calling is out for me as the brain still struggles with calls.

Got to think about this one. 80% of the time they get me right in and that works well.

I also did not take a couple of excedrin today. I know it helps. But, past two days I have put it off and then about now decided if I wanted to do anything today and not feel so lousy I need to take it.

Good to be back in the water.

Commercial Time: Vitamin D

Vitamin D is found in many dietary sources such as fish, eggs, fortified milk, and cod liver oil.

The sun also contributes significantly to the daily production of vitamin D, and as little as 10 minutes of exposure is thought to be enough to prevent deficiencies.

The term "vitamin D" refers to several different forms of this vitamin.

Two forms are important in humans: ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).

Vitamin D2 is synthesized by plants.

Vitamin D3 is synthesized by humans in the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays from sunlight.

Foods may be fortified with vitamin D2 or D3.

The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones.

Recently, research also suggests vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.

Rickets and osteomalacia are classic vitamin D deficiency diseases.

In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, which results in skeletal deformities.

In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, which results in muscular weakness in addition to weak bones.

Populations who may be at a high risk for vitamin D deficiencies include the elderly, obese individuals, exclusively breastfed infants, and those who have limited sun exposure.

Also, individuals who have fat malabsorption syndromes (e.g., cystic fibrosis) or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn's disease) are at risk.

.....So, getting outdoors helps with Vitamin D3

Tues pm: run to PO via PC

Brain is out of whack more than usual today.

Looked at Rosie's leash and couldn't figure out what to do with it or how to hook it to her collar.

Got to PO and sat in front of mail box and couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do next.

Then couldn't figure out which key to use.

Big Brain Fog today

Wed am: 20 min on trail

Started out strong. But, coming back it was as if i was in a rocking boat and I had a limp/left leg.

Feeling a little sea sick too.

But, glad I was there and glad I was there while the morning dampness was still in the forest. I like that time of the day and the feel of the air.

Stopped a litte past the phoenix tree and stretched my legs a little. I was hoping to go further down the trail but it was good I listened to my body and headed back.

That was fun!

Wanted to walk for an hour, but my back wasn't cooperating. Dang it.

Walkers, Hi to you all and all the new walkers (LOU!!)

I definitely haven't forgotten about you all. I saw my LLMD on Monday, and the news wasn't dire but wasn't incredibly great, either.

She said the abx I've been on has clearly stopped working for me. So she's started me on Tetracycline and some something to boost that. It seems I have lost quite a bit of ground over the past few months. Obviously, we'd both like to see that start to reverse.

I've managed to stay at work, though it's been a struggle some days. And I've already broken my last year's record of only 3 sick days all year.

I've trusted my LLMD from the start and feel like that's the best thing I can do now. That, and get a lot of rest. I've also stepped up acupuncture and massage treatments to try and mitigate some of the nerve pain I've been experiencing.

So no walking for a bit, I guess. But i'll continue to read and keep up with all of you. It gives me hope!

Andie

So great to hear from everyone!! Busy group this week.

1.5 miles for me and an hour of weights. Sore today from the weights . . . but a "good" sore.

I probably won't get to the EFT thread this week. Maybe early next week. It has been so busy for me. Out-of-town company this week and a mediumship workshop this weekend.

I am thankful to be healthy enough to do all of this. It never would have happened a year ago.

1.5 miles today! The heat has thrown off my frequency. Guess I've got to start using the gym again, I jut love walking outside so much.

I saw an interesting bird - I think it was a mourning dove but it was mostly white with brown speckles and bright red feet - it was kind of larger than usual mourning doves around here too...

This was posted by Keebler in a medical thread. I thought it would be appropriate to post it here also:

ILADS - DIAGNOSTIC HINTS AND TREATMENT GUIDELINES
FOR LYME AND OTHER TICK BORNE ILLNESSES

JOSEPH J. BURRASCANO JR., M.D. - Fourteenth Edition - November, 2002

Excerpts:

. . . Do not try any aerobics until your Lyme is no longer active, and your physician okays it.

. . . Exercise no more than every other day.

. . . A surprising thing happened which none of us expected-when Lyme patients went further with their rehab, to include a whole-body conditioning program, the lyme seemed to go away!

(note: the whole body conditioning program is not the same as aerobic exercise.)

======================================

EXERCISE AS A FORM OF THERAPY FOR LYME DISEASE

I encourage all Lyme patients to go through a formal rehabilitation program.

Generally, this involves progressing from simple physical therapy modalities, then to stetching and mobility training, and finally to formal strengthening exercices supervised either by the physical therapist, or by a qualified, credentialed exercise coach.

A surprising thing happened which none of us expected-when Lyme patients went further with their rehab, to include a whole-body conditioning program, the lyme seemed to go away!

I have seen this occur repeatedly, including in some patients who did not even go on antiobiotics!

Although the scientific basis for this is not known, there are several reasonable theories. It is known that the Lyme spirochete,Borrelia burgdorferi, will die if exposed to all but the tiniest oxygen concentrations.

If an aggressive exercise program can increase tissue perfusion and oxygen levels, then this may play a role in what is being seen.

Also, during aggressive exercise, the core body temperature can rise above 102 degrees; it is known that B. burgdorferi is very heat sensitive.

Perhaps it is the added tissue oxygenation, or higher body temperature, or the combination, that weakens the Lyme Borrelia, and allows the antibiotics and our defenses to be more effective.

In addition, there is now evidence that a carefully structured exercise program may benefit T-cell function in the immune system, an obvious potential benefit in an illness like Lyme that is known to weaken immune resonses.

As you progress through rehab, you must make it your goal to participate in a one hour aggressive exercise class every other day(at least three times per week).

BUT- you must be patient! It takes at least six weeks of regular physical therapy to be able to join a light conditioning and stretching program, and six more weeks are usually needed before heavier exercises can begin.

Finally, only after several weeks of this level of physical training will you be able to say that you have made a major dent in your illness. Please note that the program consists of condititioning and strengthening, and not aerobics.

Because high body temperatures may play a role in this phenomenon, I advise against using swimming as the choosen exercise.

A few final few words of caution: do not jump into an aggressive program until you are ready for it and your physical therapist agrees. Do not try any aerobics until you are ready for it and your physical therapist agrees.

Do not try any aerobics until your Lyme is no longer active, and your physician okays it.

You may need a cardiac stress test first to ensure safety. And finally, please join a program run by a trained professional with proper credentials.

Best wishes working out your Lyme!

======================

Physical therapy (if needed):

1. Relieve pain and muscle spasms utilizing multiple modalities as available and as indicated: massage, heat, ultrasound,TENS, "micro amp", etc

2. Increase mobility while protecting damaged and weakened joints, tendons, and ligaments, to increase range of motion and relieve stiffness.

3. The role of physical therapy is to prepare for the required, preferably gymbased, exercise program outlined below.

EXERCISE

Begin with a private trainer for careful direction and education.

PATIENT EDUCATION AND MANAGEMENT

(to be done during the initial one-on-one sessions and reinforced at all visits thereafter):

1. Instruct patients on correct exercise technique, including warm-up, breathing, joint protection, proper body positioning during the exercise, and how to cool-down and stretch afterwards.

2. Please work one muscle group at a time and perform extensive and extended stretching to each muscle group immediately after each one is exercised, before moving onto the next muscle group.

3. A careful interview should be performed at the start of each session to make apparent effects, both good and bad, from the prior visit's therapy, and adjust therapy accordingly.

PROGRAM

1. Aerobic exercises are NOT allowed, not even low impact variety, until your stamina improves.

2. Conditioning: Follow a "Body Sculpting" program-This consists of light calisthenics and weight lifting, using very low resistance(small weights) and many repetitions., and must involve the whole-body. This can be accomplished in exercise classes, with exercise machines, or carefully with free weights.

3. Each session should last one hour. If the patient is unable to continue for the whole hour, then modify the program to decrease the intensity to allow him/her to do so.

4. Exercise no more than every other day. You may need to start by exercise every 4th or 5th day initially, and as your abilities improve, work out more often, but NEVER two days in a row. The days you do not exercise should be spent resting.

5. This whole-body program is required to achieve wellness.

Simply placing the patient on a treadmill or an exercise bike is not acceptable (except briefly as a warm-up), nor is a simple walking program.

The End

When Was the Last Time Your Doctor Wrote you a Script for Exercise?

Most prescriptions require a trip to the local pharmacy, however, one hospital's obesity program gives out prescription scripts for exercise.

As an attempt to battle obesity, this hospital includes a unique physical fitness program as part of the doctors' orders.

An unlikely pairing of physicians and hiking enthusiasts make up this personalized prescription for exercise program.

Experts attribute the success of the program to its individualized nature and providing the patients with detailed trail maps to accomplish their weight-loss goals.

The key is personalization and giving specific explanations similar to a road map on how and why one should exercise more.

For example, the odds are much greater if a patient is given instructions to walk a specific trail by their house as opposed to being advised a vague recommendation such as, "You need to exercise more."

Studies support that the more specific a doctor's recommendations are the more likely the patient will follow through with their recommendation.

One 72-year-old woman reaped great health benefits by following her exercise prescription.

In addition to losing 12 pounds, she stated it made her realize the importance of exercising for good health.

For the most part the medical community has been slow to catch on to the importance of addressing lifestyle factors such as exercise as a means to disease prevention.

The main reason doctors cited for not discussing exercise with their patients is lack of time.

According to the Center for Disease Control, over half of Americans don't exercise enough and one-quarter don't engage in any physical activity.

Experts stressed the importance of doctors making the time to talk to their patients about exercise, particularly with statistics showing that brisk walking could reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis by 40 percent.

One doctor at Dartmouth-Hitchcock developed a motivational weight-loss program to fight obesity.

The Two- to Three-Minute Exercise Prescription

Sedentary and overweight patients receive a prescription from their doctor with fitness advice along with a pamphlet of trail maps

Session includes a pep talk from the doctor about physical activity and good health

Doctors can advise patients to buy a pedometer ($4 from the receptionist)

Patients have the option to arrange for a student from Dartmouth Medical School to make a follow-up call to check on their progress in one month

The hospital would eventually like to expand their availability of trail maps to include varying degrees of difficulty such as easy to more challenging hikes.

The majority of the $14,000 it took to develop the program has been covered by a grant with help from the National Park Service.

Doctors in the program stated that since the cost of the program is minimal, if it could help even 5 percent of the participants it would be worth it.

Wednesday-Me and Rocky 2 1/4 in the 90's degree sauna of the south. Also.................ta da...cleaned office and filed ALL paperwork!!!

Yes, folks, it's only taken me ONE year to do it!

Andie: Is still able to work, but no walking for awhile. She is in transitition with new abx, acupuncture and massage therapy.

Bob

So cool to hear Bob.

Cathy

Just checking in to see all the familar names and some new ones too. Still not up and moving very well.

Still waiting on a phone call from my LLMD after he figures out what some tests mean and ideas on where I should be going for this IV. Was suppose to be on Wed, but still no call, so if I don't hear from him by tomorrow afternoon, I'll call and see what's up.

I have more trouble with the "unknown" than the knowing.

Really just wanted to say "hello" though. Keep walking and I'll catch up to all of you when I can.

12th...1.5 miles for me and an hour of weights. Sore today from the weights . . . but a "good" sore.

Friday the 13th!!!

1.5 miles and 1 hour of weights. The weight training is hurting me more than the walking!

TuTu

9th...I walked one mile in the rain
11th..walked 1.5 miles
14th..I think I walked 1.0 miles

Summary of week 8 for group 2

Awesome Ali

Well, leave for Seattle tomorrow. Will fly by myself for the first time in 11 yrs of marriage.

Waiting to hear how it went Ali. HOpe you are OK.

Larkspur:

well, I did about 30 minutes of toning/strength training today...which was too much since I haven't done that in about 6 months.

Plus, I did this after I straightened the house for a couple hours this morning...I only made a slight dent btw

then I went food shopping with my husband and thought "uh oh..."

Will I ever learn?!

Sat - walked 1.3 miles with my husband...we just missed a big rain storm!

MTree

Hi Everyone.......

I finally caught up to all the posts since being away last week....

we seem to be growing....

been pretty active this week......mostly mundane inside and outside work at home...but I don't mind mundane....

unpacking...and getting caught up with laundry
today I managed to get in a walk....a mile.

it was sooooo hot out that I waited for Dh to come home and we walked in the evening.....the heat just wilts me.....

hope everyone is doing ok....and walking...or trying to walk...or thinking about walking....or just tapping your toes is good too.

last week was a bit of a jummble of things.....

I walked 2 miles.....with my walking.....
but did a lot of other active stuff....

I gave the dog a bath....
I went to the doctors all by myself and drove there all by myself......
Helped DH clean the garage....
did some attic stuff....
went through tons of paperwork....mostly medical stuff...

I have to make walking more of a priority though...and put more effort into that......
my body needs to get stronger.....because while doing all of those things I find that I'm to physicaly weak....

Tracy

Last we heard from Tracy she was herxing dag gum it. I saw a video recently on herxing if you are intersted Tracy. Hope you are OK.

Lou B

Hot outdoors in NOrth NJ so Lou B stayed indoors and did:

2 miles on treadmill in 40 minutes,

15 minutes easy on rower,

3 miles on stationary bike in 15 minutes.

I was going to do some free weights but I ran out-of-energy.

Not a bad start Lou B

NO snakes where I walk! .. though POSSIBLE! [Wink]

I think I walked 1.0 miles

It was at least that much. I lost count of my laps and my second method of keeping track is my watch. Forgot to look at the time when I started.

Oh well... it was probably a mile.

Still having trouble with my hip or back... whatever. Had to walk boringly SLOW! The weather was awesome though!

[Smile]

Cathy good to hear from you.

I was in and out of sleep most of all of yesterday. STrange for me but guess I needed it.

I also could not get on the web site until late last night.

So, I will hopefully be able to do the summaries today.

Looking forward to seeing how everyone did this past week.

Hoping we all have a good week.

Glad I was able to look back at the last week.

It wasn't as bad as a week as I thought.

I am really struggling to get the summaries out today.

But, I will get it done if I do it in small pieces.

WANTED....

someone to record milestones or record breakers.

what do you think? good idea?

For example:

Lou was officially told she was in remission recently.

Akinwolf accomplished something she has wanted to do for over a year this week

TuTu broke her record last week in miles walked.

I broke my record in time out of the house in my power chair recently.

Awesome Ali recently flu to see her LLMD on her own...assuming all went well..have we heard back from her yet??

Someone else is now able to drive themselves places...sorry brain is going

Any volunteers to keep track of this??
