How does one find out if one Qualifies to see a social worker?
A friend from back east suggested we check this, but there is no Dept. of Human Services here.
I checked w/ Dept.of Human Resources [thru *Health and Welfare] which I tho't might be the same,and they have ignored my calls.
In past because of work situations we've had issues w/ *H and W...so if they do ever return call... I'm not sure they'd help [they owe us, and several hundreds of other folk money,long story].
I've called other places and all I get is voice-mail/taped messages. OK,I know there are govt. cutbacks,but this is beyond ridiculous.
One place I called, 'Human Development' has a taped message to everyone that calls to dial a different free number,for 'Stimulating and Fun conversation' any time... Not what I need!
Maybe I am not understandable anymore? I can't spell worth beans ![spell check helps a bit there].
Any ideas? One place I called, is a counseling service,where TxC knows folks... I tho't they could maybe give me a lead? All I got was a recorded message...I'll see if they retrn call later.
Perhaps the whole business world when on a three day lunch break??? Just Silverwolf Scratchin' my head...

Do you mean "qualify to see a social worker" by your insurance paying - or through medicaid in your state? If through medicaid, you'd have to be registered first and your phone book should have some sort of office to call.
It may be helpful to be clear on what a social worker does. Normally, that is more for problem solving or to link someone with services.
Some have counseling training but most are not trained in therapy as much as a Ph.D. psychologist or family therapist might be.
If you have a LLMD, I'd call their office and ask who is on their list. I would NEVER see any professional who was not completely LL as it can be such a waste of time. Lyme changes most things and it's vital for a professional to know all about it.
You an also look at the inside of your phone book and call the emergency mental health hotline and ask them about referrals for your state and county.

TxC and I do not have any medical insurance or medicaid, it is all out of pocket.
A friend in Michigan, works w/ SS benificiaries,and suggested we check on getting a social worker. We are trying to navigate all sorts of things,Voc' Rehab and VA Disability for TxC,and perhaps SSI for me?
Our memories have become 'swiss cheese' unfortunately ,and the friend tho't Idaho might have a similar program to Michigan ,in helping folk w/ various services.
I've sorta struck out so far,and folk haven't even called me back,so ?????
We don't have a LLMD right now, and most of Idaho is sort of a 'Set your clock back a century' or so, type of place. They barely believe that CFIDS?FMS exists around here.
We've been given a good lead, to a LLND, about five hours away...but right now,it is ,do I see my dad before he passes away,or do I go to the LLND, cannot afford both at the moment.
Thanks for the response,it is appreciated, I don't want to clutter up an emergency hotline, but perhaps there is another number that I have missed soemwhere!

Try googling "idaho department of mental health" or variations on that theme. Once you find the site, see if they have a listing of state contracted mental health agencies. (Or better yet, a HELP phone number!)
Typically state contracted agencies provide services on a sliding scale fee, and have to provide services regardless of the recipients ability to pay. (that's how it works here in NJ, and I'm pretty sure that it's the way it is everywhere).
If you see a social worker, look for an LCSW, (licensed clinical social worker) they are the one's that are trained to do therapy. LCSW's have Master's degrees. For assistance with linking to various services, a BA level case worker does the trick.
Lyme literate social workers are a rarity, even in areas like NJ where lyme has been hyper endemic for a long time. It may be that the best you can get is someone who is open to being educated.
Anyway, shy of rooting through the phone book and calling a bunch of places, that would be quickest/easist way to find what you are looking for.

.You have to go there in person and fill out an application. If it's for welfare or medicaid they will assign a case worker and whatever else you may need.
I would start there.I am pretty sure going there in person to start with is key. I think after that you can request a phone appt. if it is difficult for you to travel.

Sometimes I just don't have the notion of a clue even. I wasn't even sure who to call or not!
