About 10 1/2 years ago when my dog was a puppy she got Lyme. I have no idea why she wasn't vaccinated for it. I relied on my vet too much I suppose and he never suggested it.

One day she got very lethargic. By evening she could not walk. We rushed her to the emergency vet and they suspected Lyme. The gave her antibiotics and pain killers. Then they referred us to a specialist who positively diagnosed with her Lyme (after a blood test and clinical study).

She seemed to recover except for a few things:

She has always had a limp in her front leg, she has inflammatory bowel disease (moderate) and she is sort of peculiar in her thinking. She howls at the moon, barks into the air, has never really been housebroken, seems spacey and detached from reality and yet at other times comes across as being the smartest dog on earth. She is a Keeshond.

I have had many dogs (now have three) and I've never seen such odd things. Does anyone know if she may have suffered permanent damage from the Lyme?

Btw, I immediately changed vets and absolutely love the one we have been going to ever since.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I ask the same question. My dog has Lyme and I have noticed a huge change is his energy.

About a year ago he was treated with a month of oral ABX and that was it.

He seems to have some joint problems and he is only 3 years old...

I would imagine it would effect the dog in the same manner, but I don't know...

Kreynolds,

What kind of dog do you have? Being a Keeshond, mine has tons of fur and there was no way on earth I would have ever been able to see a tick on her.

It makes me sad to think of poor health and discomfort when underneath her weirdness I know she is a sweet girl.

I was a former vet tech before getting sick. It is possible she is still infected 10 years later. Have her checked for Lyme again and maybe try a round of antibiotics to see what happens. IF she gets better within a few days it was likely lyme again or still...

Good luck,
MEissa

Merrygirl,

She has been on Metranydazol and Sulfasalazine for about four years due to her inflammatory bowel disease. Do you think these medications would have a beneficial effect in treating Lyme if she still has it?

Thanks

Leelee:

I have a Lhasa Apso.. Lots of fur... I feel real bad for him because look at what this disease is

doing to people. Imagine what is doing to dogs that are untreated. My Vet is great, but only

treated him twice with AXB. He is very tired all the time and his joints seem to bother him.

Kreynolds,

Poor guy. I feel for him. My furry baby is just like that too. [Frown]

There is no reason to think that LD does not affect our dogs just as it affects us. Of course, they have chronic LD and the same symptoms. I own a dog spa and do therapeutic canine massage. I also howl at the moon on occasion..

dogshowdisaster, LOL! You and Kiki (my fur baby) could really make some music together! [Wink]
