Recent threads on cooking here,,,thanks Maddog,,, made me wonder all over. I tried grilling a steak on this little cheap grill one nice day.
The fire went out as it seemed the briquettes got too cold. never grilled out in the winter before.
Thought maybe the steak dripped on the charcoal and put it out.
Couple days later tried a couple burgers, same thing. Thought maybe the thing wasn't getting enough air altho the little air slide was wide open.
So I put square lid on with 1/8 turn so corners were open. Worked slightly better but still took 45 minutes to an hour to grill a burger,,,way too long and seemed way cold.
The coals seems to just go out. Now more I think,it just doesn't get enough air. Coals can be relit easy enough and used again,,,but hard to cook on a cold fire.
now as to my hillbilly fix. I am either gonna take my gun OR my drill and aerate the bottom a bunch.
Question is--- should the holes go from the outside,,,bottom,,, up ,,,,or from the inside down??
What cha all expert cookers think?? Me B -just don-

Hillbilly says... "Shoot from the outside in."
And next time just call me Tincup... ok?
Airflow better drafting inwards and upwards to fuel the fire.
BUT...
The fire nut that I am .... do remember that small pieces of ash and coals can slip out the bottom unnoticed and cause whatever is underneath to catch fire.
Dry grass, leaves, etc... so do be mindful that you and your cows don't burn down the town.
I'm sure you remember this song....
"One dark night when we were all in bed,
Old Mc Leary left a lantern in the shed,
And when the cow kicked it over,
She winked her eye and said:
There'll be a hot time in the old town tonight.
FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!"
Now.. what time is supper? I sure enjoyed the beef you shared with all of us the last time we met.

Is your grill maybe designed to have the coals sit on a separate little grate inside the actual enclosure? This makes more air circulate and keeps the coals from destroying the sheet metal too quickly also. The meat normally sits on a SECOND grate. Sometimes one of the grates gets lost.
Hillbilly engineering should give you some ideas on ways to make a grate if you're missing the original- use some expanded steel grating, or they sell replacement grates in the grill section of the store or online through grillparts.com or places like that.
Right now is a 'grate' time to get a free used propane grill on Craigslist, then rebuild it if the burner's burnt out (usually why they're free in the first place).

Hey Tincup, Have a question for the fire nut,
How is it that one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Watch out about too much air circulation.....in other words don't shoot yur grill too many times.....you mite burn yur burger. Keep a can of beer on hand to pour over the flames!

Hmmmm, even if it's not snowing it's got to be really cold there for grilling. I'm thinking the crock pot sounds a whole lot better.
When you "modify" your grill, perhaps along with the can of beer and duct tape, you should have a medical kit on hand??? Just saying... the best laid plans of mice and men...

Oh it is REALLY warm here,,,about 20 as we speak.
Beats 20 below any day!!!
And as to keeping a beer in hand,,,does "root" beer count,,thats all I keep in the house,,,or do I have to make a fire extinquisher run(CHEAP beer)???
This grill is so cheap it doesnt have a bottom grille, unlike most,,I will keep an eye open for one.
I used to have a small hibachi(that may not be spelled right) but gave it away since I had more kids home then and space was king.
THAT was a much better small grill,,,have to LOOK for one of those again!!

Well if you are gonna cook the hillbillly way, you will need some cheap beer! However, since you are a lymie, you get a free pass and may substitute root beer for the time being.

Root beer as long as it is in one of those bottles that look like beer..starts with a W...HA!
Just pictured the hillbilly engineer shooting his foot while putting those holes in...so yep...might need a first aid kit nearby...
