I have a friend in Texas that had an emergency and ended up at the hospital. He has no insurance and a 4K bill that he'll struggle to pay.

All we need is to find out what assistance programs exist for people who lack insurance in Texas. Does anyone know of anything he can apply for?

Sorry, I don't know specifically about Texas but many hospitals will have a program of their own that can help decrease the bill. It is usually based on income. It can't hurt to ask the hospital if they have any such program.

i have a friend who made arrangements with a hospital to make small payments.

maybe he can do this.

also i think there's something called cobra but i'm not sure what it is.

Unfortunately, my sister-in-law had the same problem. I don't believe there are many assistance programs available.

As other mentioned, your best bet is to call the hospital. They will probably cut the bill down drastically and offer a payment plan.

Try calling United Way, Red Cross, and the local (county or city) health dept. You could probably find the phone numbers on the internet. They will know what assistance is available for your friend.

Have you checked with local churches? I know of some churches in my area that offer financial help (medical and utility bills, heating oil, food) to people in need.
