Hi everyone. I have recently quit my internship, and given up on a new career for the time being. I cannot work. I have some really severe neuro issues, along with the headaches, and weird fatigue that comes w/ Lyme. This was a really hard decision for me, particularly since I am a single parent with no money. All of my mone has gone towards my treatment, and I am running out soon. I need to continue.
I am considering applying for SSI. I know that they do not accept lyme as a debilitating condition. But I also know there is plenty of grey area here. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this a fight that will leave me even more discouraged than I already am? Do I have any other choices?
I dont have much to work with in life anymore. I would not look for disability unless I was truly unable to do much past what is needed to get through a day. Unfortunately this is where I am at.
has anyone had success with getting these benefits? Or no success? I have not yet discussed this with my Dr, but I plan to when I see him in 2 weeks....

With the ssi your debilitating condition is not lyme it is why you cannot work, you mentioned neuro issues(you'd need to be more specific) headaches, fatigue. It's not the diagnosis they look at but the symptoms.
That said, I was turned down by ssi but approved by my long-term disability co. I've read a lawyer can help. And you need documentation of your debilitating symptoms and support from your doctor(s). They will request all medical records.
Hopefuly someone will be along who was approved and may be more help.

Thank you...I am getting the impression that the best way to the benefits is through the wording. WHich is where a lawyer woukd help. BUT- if I could afford a lawyer I wouldnt need SSI.

If you file for SSI you will be turned down. Its what they do. That is when you need an attorney who specializes in disability issues. If they think you have a valid case they will take it on contingency...their fees come from your back check. Its virtually impossible to get approved without an attorney. And SSI doesnt pay much..do you not have enough points to try for SSDI? That would be the better way to go. I cant post links but a few google searches could get you some info. Good luck!

It is possible to get ssdi/ssi while having Lyme.
But it is really the symptoms not the diagnosis that they consider.
In my state there are lawyers who do not charge until you win. They dont get anything unless you win.
