I've seen that essay before.
It still bothers me, making fun of physicians.

The part that bothers me is making light of mental illness. It is no laughing matter when you have a family member who suffers from one.

Come on, some people are "allowed" to make fun of others, but I'm supposed to keep my trap shut?

I think a lot of us have felt disempowered by doctors who did not take us seriously, who dismissed years (or decades) of declining health with a diagnosis of psychological problems despite some questionable physiological test results, and who left us to suffer and question ourselves. Being a "glass half full" type, I am of the opinion that most of them were operating out of well-meaning ignorance, and time constraints impeded their ability to take the initiative to investigate beyond this diagnosis despite incongruent test results. Nobody can ever restore the years I lost, the opportunities, the money, the career, etc., because of these well-meaning but under interested doctors. If someone wants to write a clever article giving back some of what they've received from the medical community, maybe it will open some eyes. Nobody likes to be disrespected, including patients.

I think this humor is appropriate because it's just turning around what so many doctors tell us. They are the ones who disrespect and show ignorance of the mentally ill, psychiatrists and psychologists, by telling so many people that their physical illnesses have mental causes when they don't.

Also, it's not making fun of all physicians--only the bad ones who have messed up our lives. A little mockery is a small bit of harmless revenge, I think.

Thanks for posting it. It made me laugh, and I needed that today.

Pick up the book "What Doctors Think" if you'd like to understand why they often behave like this.

That was amusing. [Smile]

I am not a physician, so do your own research to confirm any ideas given and then speak with a health care provider you trust.

Literally LOL, heard all the way down the hall! Thanks, sickpuppy! [hi]

Erik Johnson [kiss] is amazingly astute and should be writing more educational material for Western Med students. Just a sampling of the vital public health info he shares:

"Physicians fixated upon the metaphysical belief system of ``If we don't know about it, then it doesn't exist'' are suffering from a mental defect or psychological condition known as ``Doctors with Unexplained Medical Beliefs'': D.U.M.B.

Many people I know still need to be alerted to the prevalence of physicians practicing while D.U.M.B.

Now I can share the this link from sickpuppy!

A lot of people do get offended by others making jokes, but they've got to understand they shouldn't take it personally. Usually the people making the jokes are the ones WITH the illnesses, like myself. Laughter is the only way that some of us can make it through the day. If I didn't make fun of lymes disease and doctors and what is my everyday life, I would be so depressed. So, you taking offense when it is a friend that has it is somewhat offensive to us who do have it, because, although you may see what you're friend goes through, you really have no idea. Sorry to "offend" people out there.
