I've been receiving disability benefits for just over a year. I always have this fear in the back of my head that they could take it away at anytime.
Does anyone on SSDI know how all this works? How often do they check up on you and how do they check up on you?

Hi laura j, I`ve been collecting SSDI benefits for 3 years now. From what the lady from SS told me it would be 5 years until SSDI would ask for additional information from your doctor(s) proving you are still disabled and unable to work.
I filed my paperwork for SSDI while I lived in New Jersey, in the process I moved to North Carolina due to a divorce, my claim was approved a few months later. I am not sure if every state has the same SSDI rules?
You have only been collecting for a year now, you should be good for quite the while yet. So don`t stress, just focus on getting better. Hope this helped a little bit, be well. POP

Laura, you don't get kicked off of SSDI just like that. My daughter has been on it for years and they don't bother with her overly much...I think it is every three years here, they review her case and it is a phone call with her case worker and that is it. They know she is ill.
Unless you give them cause for concern...like fraud, they leave you alone...just follow the rules and you will be okay.

The rules are like if you work any you report your income...if someone moves in with you and has an income you have to let them know that...a change in household number...easy stuff like that.
You have a case worker, but you might not know that...any SSDI person can answer your questions, but an individual SS person handles your reviews and any changes that might occur.
Some people will get a request for information in the mail when their review comes up (usually a short two page form that you fill out and send in) and some get a phone interview (you will also be notified beforehand by mail about the phone interview and they ask you to call them and set up an interview time).
My daughter also lived in Ohio for a short time while she was on SSDI and they were harder to get a hold of and talk to there...in WI the case workers are much nicer and more helpful.
SSDI isn't "out to get you"...you were accepted into the program and they are working for YOU...don't forget that.

I think it depends on your case as to whether your 1st review is in 3 or 5 years. Hubby just got a form in the mail -- asked if he had had any hospitalizations or ER visits since becoming disabled. Also asked for list of docs I think and maybe a list of meds.
It was so easy compared to the initial process. I think it was less than a month later he was notified that his benefits would be continued for the next however many years until he was up for renewal again.
I would not get stressed out over this right now.

Thanks so much everyone for your help. At least I can relax about this issue for a little while. Lord knows I have enough other things to worry about.
