Found this link.

http://smartklean.wordpress.com/2011/02/23/the-top-12-cancer-causing-products-in-the-average-home/

How much of this is true? I know everything can cause cancer right.. prob should not be using a microwave at that.

Ugh we have enough already to worry about with lyme treatment as it is..

I would say it's pretty much true that those ingredients can cause cancer, etc .. but in limited amounts, we're probably OK.

You would not believe the things in our hair care products, lotions, and shampoos that are dangerous for us. Parabens are a biggie, as is the sodium laurel sulfate.

My dr has encouraged me to go paraben free. He says it can cause candida/yeast (besides cancer!). So I have bought all new stuff except for my eye cream and eye makeup remover.

I can't find what I want and can afford for those two.

As for the laundry detergents, that doesn't seem to be as dangerous???? Notice they have a link to where they are SELLING green detergents. (nice try, guys)

Yes shampoo is a biggie - I need to find a good paraben-free one - what kind do you like, Lymetoo?
I want an unscented paraben-free one - I don't know if that's so easy to find though..

And face and body lotions too.

I gave up on makeup - I'm suspecting every major makeup line has toxic chemicals. I think lipstick/gloss is scary too since you end up digesting a lot of it when you eat foods.

Yes I still use Tide free and gentle brand, no scent. Yes they are trying to make you buy their detergent, hahahaha.

Aubrey Organics for shampoos. Go to Vitacost. I have the J.A.Y. Desert Herb and the Primrose and Lavender "scalp soothing"..

I use the desert herb to get the lather going, then follow with the scalp soothing. Neither one has a strong scent .. all natural stuff.

Right now I'm using Eucerin. You have to read labels, because some of them have parabens.

I use Burt's Bees chapstick now. Didn't realize I was ingesting parabens with my Blistex!!

I don't use much makeup. Just mascara. No telling WHAT is in it!!

I need to check on my lipstick. I use Covergirl.

Ok thanks Tutu for the info!

I do use Eucerin too.

Did you know there is gluten-free shampoo? I just found this on Vitacost too.

http://www.vitacost.com/Organix-South-TheraNeem-Shampoo

Not sure if I need to really go gluten-free on my hair but just thought if anyone on here is super sensitive to gluten they can give it a shot and see if it makes any difference. I didn't even know gluten existed in hair care products..

I'm pretty sure the Aubrey stuff is all gluten free. It may not say so on the bottle, but it is naturally that way.

I've used Aubrey's for several years.

The gluten free is important IF you are highly sensitive. You could possibly get it in your mouth. (sure wouldn't be much!)

I just bought some tinted lipstick from Burt's Bees today. Haven't tried it yet. Hoping it adds enough color.

Ok good to know - well I'm not highly sensitive but it's always safe to do that for now anyway!

Is Aubrey's good for thick hair? Although in the past few weeks I have been shedding soooo much hair in chunks - like 50 strands a day at least.. so I'm worried I will be bald soon.

So need something gentle.

I should try Burt's Bees!

It's VERY gentle. I really love it. Should work for any kind of hair.

I tried the Burt's bees lipstick. Pretty low in color. But I may use it for everyday. We'll see how long the color lasts when wearing it.

Wonderful link:

My family thinks I'm crazy to avoid so many products! After reading the info at ewg, you can't but help to read labels on EVERYTHING!!

Thanks LAX for the link!

How do you know if something has paraben - is that listed as "paraben" under ingredients? Or does it have a scientific name..

You'll see the paraben .. it's sometimes methylparaben or propylparaben.

The sad thing is that there are lots of other bad chemicals in our skin care products. I have a list somewhere.

You can key in the products you use in the EWG site I mentioned above. You may be surprised to find out how they rank! I changed just about everything that I used. It takes time to find healthy versions that do a good job.

Did you know that SLS is in about every "regular" shampoo? It is used by race car drivers to de-grease and clean their engines?

You will love it, penguingirl. Which one did you buy??

LAX.. I wasn't too interested in giving them my email address in exchange for info. There is another database site. I'll ask a friend for the URL. I've been to it before, but don't have the URL here.

Yes, regular shampoos and many body washes have SLS.

Lymetoo - I got the kind you recommended! The scalp soothing and Desert Herb. And some conditioner from Aubrey as well.

Now I have my boyfriend freaked out since his hair gel has paraben and SLS. But it's a brand new bottle so I said well just finish it up and then we can find you something on Vitacost or Whole Paycheck. He said do they all work the same way as mainstream brands and I wasn't able to answer that because I haven't tried them all! Oh well, trial and error right?

Oh and he tried to kiss me after he had put on blistex and I said no no - you must wipe that paraben off your lips first, haha. Sad, huh?

I have to find a good face lotion soon - so if anyone has good recommendations I would appreciate it!
