OZ is at least into herbs and stuff ... was SHOCKED that he allowed someone to recommend a dollar store for such things. I guess he's not savvy on that!!

i agree about food and vitamims-i dont like buying vits at drug stores or walmart...unless i really know the brand-like cosamine or niche mag... im afraid im putting so much bad crap in me the good stuff wont even matter
when i try to explain this to ppl they often dont get it...they assume all vits are good
same with dogfood
but i have learned its the same as talking to someone with lyme in denial...say your piece and let it go

Good for birthday balloons, gift wrap, cards etc.
Wouldn't buy anything I was going to consume.
Even have to be careful in the grocery store; I don't buy any type of fish anymore due to reports that some of it is grown in Chinese sewage.
Yuck.

- China can have some marvelous herbs and spices. Some are grown, harvested, packed and shipped with the utmost of care.
I hate to see China bashed here, but it's true that a not insignificant amount of products being sent from MANY places (and even right from here in the U.S.) is not good.
There have been problems with lead in Turmeric and in Chocolate. For anything we swallow, we just need to know all about it. Even the SEED can make a difference if it's doused in chemicals or altered.
There is no one country where all plant material is either safe & pure - or polluted or contaminated. Know your source.
Also know the plant. Many spices, ounce ground (even if "pure") get too old with time. Exposure to heat, moisture, etc. also matters tremendously.
Even being in a clear container, the light can damage the spice/herb. And plastic containers pose dangers of their own.
OLIVE OIL, too, has a problem with good supplies. Not all is what it says it is and you NEVER want to use old oil of any kind.
Back to the Dollar Store - unless able to trace any consumable product, assume it's not good for consumption in the dusty bargain bins.
Now, if one is actually able to trace it and prove it fresh, safe, etc. great. Good luck with that search. -

Probably. Isn't that a very reputable company?
I would worry about the cheap &%$# at the cheap stores, that's all.

- lpkayak,
You asked: "think 1st Chinese herbs are still ok?"
Yes, absolutely. They are a top quality group. MANY Chinese herbs are top quality. Some are not.
You can't categorize from one country or from one region. The bad guys can operate anywhere. So can the good guys. -

If it's not questionable where the fish came from, then there's always the mercury content etc.
I don't know that much about the spices. We do buy tumeric at Whole Foods - Himalayan brand.
For a while I was buying it at the Indian grocery and putting it in the capsules myself, to save $.
But the capsules are pricey, so it's hardly worth it.

- Fish?
Missed where that was mentioned but, golly, that's a huge thing to try to research, too. As linky says, mercury in fish is a problem.
Farmed fish is, too, for many reasons.
Linky, you don't have to put Turmeric in capsules, you can just mix it with a 1/2 cup of water water and slosh it on down. Taste is rough but chase it with a glass of water.
I've tried to add a drop of stevia or something else but nothing really helps the taste that is no really so bad as just kind of earthy -- so I just drink it down fast and chase it. -

Nordic Naturals brand is supposed to be a good fish oil--free of mercury. They make capsules flavored with lemon that supposedly don't repeat on you.

Keebler,
Thank you for the tip on the tumeric.
Tutu,
I will check your brand and see if it's any cheaper than what we get.
Yeah, scary about the fish, but the report seemed legit when I heard it. I think the FDA even had something to do with finding it.
It was a couple of years ago and my memory ain't so good.

Agreed about the Carlson Cod Liver/Fish Oils. (We take the CLO) It's superior to even other health food store brands.
As for the fish .... Luckily my "generic" grocer LABELS point of origin and whether it's been "previously frozen."
I REFUSE to buy Shrimp (or anything else) from Thailand or China! It IS true that fish from that part of the world is regularly culled by U.S. inspection agents for HIGH BACTERIA counts.
And if you saw the 60 minutes piece about "fake drugs" coming out of China (mixed up in garages and colored with PAINT) I doubt you would Ever buy another tablet of ANYTHING from the Dollar Store!
I admit I do buy gift wrap and kitchen gadgets there sometimes, but never Ever any food items! Labels are easy to fake - and if it's in an "odd lot" discount store - you can likely forget about freshness or anything else in the way of quality assurance.
Ditto on the drug store/grocery vitamins. If you read the labels you know they are low on vitamins and high on additives... while selling at the same price as trusted brands such as Twin Labs or Solgar.
I have to say, looking at Dr. B's protocol (as a former college nutrition major) I'm afraid he doesn't realize this. But that is typical of our medical professionals, most of whom were never required to take even ONE course on nutrition, while studying for their medical degree. (Which I think is pathetic.)
OK I'll jump off my soapbox now.

Except to say ... Dr. Oz? He's good for entertainment purposes only. If you want some more credible medical advice, I'd say go to Dr. Mercola's website.

Oh LOL,Lymetoo! That's how "out of the loop" I am with TV these days.
Actually, although I wholeheartedly agree with Mercola on a lot of things (like his support of raw milk), he sometimes takes a position which makes me a bit leery. I used to subscribe to him, but got really tired of clearing out my inbox all the time.
