Had no emf problems with my 10 year old computer. Replaced it with a laptop and got increased tinnitus and face/bilateral arms tingling/burning.

so went to costco with my emf meter and bought what I thought was a low emf computer. I only got the readings on the front, now that it's set up the reading at the back of the compuer are high, but not higher than the laptop.

the tinnitus is even worse with the desktop, with some facial tingling. Is it worth is to try some shielding and which one would be easier to shield? Or do I need to give up the electronic world(i'm using the library computer now which i can be on about 15 min without sypmtoms)

thanks

Such a bummer when we get something so expensive, so necessary in our time and then it clobbers us in unseen ways.

Tinnitus can be high not (or not just) from EMF but from the various frequency levels coming from the unit. The pitch and all the intricate acoustic stuff going on in ANY computer can torture my ears, for sure.

And the frequencies vary for all kinds of reasons from how hot the computer may get to how slow a program may be running.

It's not just the working electronics board that emits sounds but also the fan(s). And you can't block off the vent system in hope of softening sounds - it has to be open to the air.

Also consider: petroleum and chemicals in the unit.

It's mostly made from petroleum products and they will off-gas. Even fumes you don't smell like the flame retardants inside the board, can stress the brain, liver, ears, etc.

The toxic reactions to these chemicals can contribute to tinnitus.

Use near an open window, for sure or in an otherwise extremely well ventilated space that has consistent air circulation.

I hope you kept the box just in case a return may be necessary.

I'm not sure what the next move would be but you might contact groups below for suggestions:

American Tinnitus Assoc.

The Hyperacusis Network

Chemical Injury (network or whatever its called)

other groups for MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity)

Other "Eco" groups may have suggestions for a computer with less toxic materials - but not sure how they get around the flame retardants.

--------------------

Maybe buy a used computer from a friend - who does not smoke or use any fragrances on their body or in their home.

As this problem has troubled me, it seems like each computer can have unique sounds.

I'm sorry to hear of you going through this. I sure hope there is a quick solution.

Those groups would be your best guides for specific makes and models.

EMFs are just one concern. If you have tinnitus, all these other things also really matter.

thanks keebler, i did off-gas it for a week in the garage before setting it up. I know it's still giving off bad stuff.

Think it is the emfs though becuase it didn't just make the noise louder and higher pitched(which is usually how the tinnitus reacts to meds/sounds/saunas, etc.)

it actually put a new noise in my ear, and gave me what I call electric face. Just the slight feeling of electricity in my face.

Think I'm going to try and return it, and cut way back on my computer use. I hate to isolate myself even more, but I really can't take the tinntus getting any worse.

take care

I'm so sorry that you experience this problem. As I'm homebound, the computer is my life-line but it's a double edge sword, it seems.

I'm not very familiar with how to offset EMFs. I had hoped you'd have gotten more replies about that aspect.

You might check out other forums, though.

As for off-gasing, if you have a garage, that's good . . . I just wonder if there's a way you could still use this - with ventilation and then send it off to the garage for the night (out during the heat of the day, though, as you'd not want it to get too hot).

GiGi may have suggestions for the EMF adjustment.

You can search her past posts. Good luck.

What brand and model of computer? It might be good for others to take note if they need to shop for a new one.

Still, I would hope someone, somewhere could detail - with authority if these "EMF computer shields" really work - or if there is some other way to achieve that.

Mercola's site might address that. I trust his opinion on most things. www.mercola.com
