funny i just had this happen. i went to rinse dishes in the sink and the water wouldn't go down. turned on the garbage disposal and the water back up more than half of the sink!! i was in a panic cause he was gone and i didn't want it overflowing in the floor.
so i started the dishwasher and it seemed to go down.
mike came home and rest the garbage disposal. there's a button on the bottom.
i turned on the dishwasher again, and yep, put drano down the other side, not the disposal side.
seemed to clear it up fine.
course it sounds like a freight train now. i think we're going to have to replace it. been in there at least 15 years.

THANKS...
as you can tell, I was in a panic too! (hubby is gone)

feel around on the bottom of the garbage disposal. it will feel like a small bump and press it in. often the disposal will jam and just needs this button to restart itself. seems to work sometimes.
i've had to actually clean out under the sink, crawl under and look at it to find it.
i put drano down the other side of the sink (i have the two sided sink), about half a bottle!! for some reason i turned on the dishwasher and that seemed to help.
bet it was those pesky shrimp shells i stuffed down there, but don't tell him!!!

just got a note posted on my door. Must be having tons of probs with disposals lately.
Complete directions on using the disposal and what NOT to grind. Biggest thing they had on list was noodles, pasta , macoroni,(see a trend?)
I didnt know disposals got pluged with noodles etc, but I guess now I do.
It must stick inside and not get ejected,,,,says it plugs up drains too.
Tutu, in your case sounds as if the drain is plugged up more than disposal bad
Probably need to take trap off under sink and snake that drain. If its iron pipe it may be old age caught up with it,,,if its plastic pipe it just plugged up.
Never had good luck with Draino. Never tried the bleach thing from other thread,,,might be the time to try,,,prob eats grease to work
Might try a fast cure,,,turn on disposal and water and at the same timeuse a plunger on the off side sink but you have to be quick
That might force a clog out of trap if thats plugged. Depends on how plumbed and cant see it from here.
IF you have an 25' auger/ spring sink drain snake you could try going thru off sink and see if it works,,,least mess and easiest.

- That is why eating GLUTEN is so bad for US!! It is used as GLUE!!! You just proved the point!!
Seems to be a bit better now. Haven't done anything. I can run small amounts of water down the drain. Not much.
I ground butternut squash, pork tenderloin and a few beans. I would blame the meat myself!

Got it fixed. Thank goodness the landlord was already planning to be here today to fix other things. He ended up being here 4 hours! Almost all of that time was spent on fixing the plumbing.
It had a kink in the line way down under the crawl space. He had to shore it up or something. It had gotten bent.
In the meantime, he had to use sulfuric acid (I think) and it is NOT GOOD for my Sjogren's symptoms!! Double AAACCCKK!! I've had the sliding glass door open for hours and it's a tad chilly in here.
Wish I had shut off the heat prior to his using that stuff because my eyes burn even when in the back rooms.
It's better, but makes me a bit anxious. I'm trying to heal my poor body, not make it worse.
So now I get to wash dishes. Tried to convince him that he should stay and wash them.. but NO! hehehehee
Praising the Lord that this is not my HOUSE or I'd be paying big bills for this today!!

I think they are PVC pipes. Yes, I believe he mentioned it needing to be strapped or something. Let's just say it got BENT then. It dropped down.
And it had gunk in it that had built up.
