My brother and SIL want to come back east for a vacation. They are asking me about Maine and Cape Cod as they've never been to either destination.
We are familiar with Cape Cod and vacationed there several times pre-Lyme, though honestly I am terrified about getting reinfected as I know the Cape is an endemic/epidemic area and not so sure I want to subject my family to this.
As for Maine, I went to Portland and Bar Harbor many years ago with a girlfriend. It was beautiful and breathtaking years ago, but not at all practical for my brother and his family and ours due to logistics.
I would very much appreciate any advice/input.

Don't know what to tell you. Both places have ticks. Maybe less in Maine, but you sound like you are ruling that out anyway.

No, not ruling anything out. He is just very interested in exploring Boston as well so logistically, Cape Cod is much more realistic.
I don't think he understands the geography of the NE. Maine is a huge state and is not amenable to touring for a few days in conjunction with a vacay to Boston, IMO. Please tell me if I am wrong.
I know both places have ticks. I hope I can convince him and my SIL to just visit Boston or NYC and be done. Concrete is a good place in my world.

I'm with you on the concrete.
Maine has the coast and Acadia, which would make a good vacation.
Someone who vacationed on Martha's Vineyard, also with many ticks, said they had warning signs everywhere. Sometimes places that depend on tourism tend to underplay the tick danger though.
On the other hand, there is certainly lots to do in Boston and NYC.

i love maine-southern maine is only and hr from boston and you might get there quicker cuz less traffic
wells is my favorite...but i like the beach...less ppl...less traffic
ogunquit and kennebunkport have the cutesie little shops
york has sandy beaches
the others have lots of rocky shores but you can drive right to the ocean...its not all mansions
great restaurants everywhere...what is it you want?
around southern maine i rarely see ticks...but i am usually near sandy, ocean areas with a dog or my shoes having permethrin on them...i jsut dont see them
i would be petrified of the cape...toooooo many ticks, ppl and traffic and hard to actually get to a beach
let me know if you come up! maybe we could meet. im about 20 min inland

Just from what I've read on this board, I would be petrified to go to Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard.
SCARY!!

Thanks so much Kayak for all that info! I am taking it into account as I plan the family's vacation for next summer.
Poppy, I am apparently the one with no understanding of geography!
Seems like a trip to Boston and southern Maine is very doable. When I think of Maine, I think of Acadia/Bar Harbor because that's where I've been. Note to self: don't assume you KNOW things!
Kayak, I very much appreciate your info on all these towns in Maine! I am trying to plan a trip for the extended family (it's just what I do). I have no idea whether or not this vacation will actually even happen, but I am planning it anyway. If I don't, no one else will.
Lymetoo, I am taking Cape Cod out of the equation. For all I know, that's where we all could have been infected. I am just terrified at the very thought of going back there. It's ashame, really. Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket are just so beautiful, yet so infested with ticks.

my sisters family has been getting together in old orchard beach for 40 yrs
its got an amusement park and stuff...not my thing - but lots of ppl like that
one winter i rented the bottom floor of a 3 story house that had an apartment on each floor
the weekend of thanksgiving i paid for the top two floors for my kids and their spouses. each floor had a kitchen and one or two bedrooms and baths. each had porches or decks -it was right on the marsh...and only a few steps from the ocean. in wells there is a sort of peninsula with a road on it and houses on ether side of the road. one side faces ocean and one side faces marsh. i kayaked and loved having th kayak in the backyard and just putting into the marsh with out driving anywhere
that was a really good holiday...
then there are many motels with kitchenettes and connecting suites and stuff. another time my brothers and sisters all got cottages in the same complex.
