- Try to buy without any finishing chemicals added. If they are wrinkle resistant, formaldehyde is usually involved.
Flame retardants also best to avoid. You may have to make them in the specific colors you desire. Sheets can work but, again, if they are permanent press or wrinkle resistant, chemicals have been infused into the fabric.
It's a challenge, I know.
JCP usually has good prices and I bought some years ago that - much to my surprise (who would've thought?) did smell but I could not return them . . . I washed several times (sending all that chemical just into our water supply, of course) . . . it did reduce the smell. I still feel bad today about all that crap I washed down the drain, though, and wonder how much is still off-gassing.
I used a king size sheet for my patio window and it fits perfectly - straight across but rarely really close it.
It's a good thing it is summer so they can get lots of fresh air before closing up for winter.
Some dyes can also really smell. Darker colors, especially, due to over-dyeing.
I know mostly what to avoid but sorry I don't have links for safe fabrics or safe finished drapes / curtains.
You might try Vermont Country Store. They often carry items that are even decades old, maybe before all the chemicals were required to be added?
If you can buy from a place in California, I *think* they have stricter codes for chemicals in products - and safer for the consumer. -

- BATIK Fabric? If you like batiks, are handy with a sewing machine or know someone who is, there are fabulous color combinations in batik quilting fabrics and most are not chemically treated.
Quilting & Fabric shops usually carry some batiks and they usually also have references for someone who could make you curtains, perhaps for about the same price as buying them (perhaps). Then your money stays in your community.
I suggest quilt shops first as they are more likely to have fabrics free of the kinds of chemicals at the more typical fabric stores. And if they don't have a fabric you like, they may be able to guide you.
Just be sure the fabric (if washable) is washed and dried (in a dryer, so that any shrinking will settle) before cutting for size. -

I've bought 100% cotton curtains from Urban Outfitters and Cost Plus. I like them because I can wash then.
None I've bought have been too chemically at all. I just wash them once before putting them up just to be on the safe side.

Do you sew at all? Curtains are easy to make! The nice thing is you can go to a fabric store and choose whatever fabric you like.
I recently resumed my hobby of sewing after my ears could handle the sewing machine noise and it has been such a good creative outlet for me, helping me to forget about my illness and feel normal, even if only for a short time.
I would be happy to help you by giving instructions if you measure your windows. PM me if interested.

My mom used to make all of our curtains when I was growing up. I miss sewing!! I really don't have room for my sewing machine here, but I sure have been getting the itch to sew again!

Lpkayak, just sent you a PM.
Lymetoo, could you get a portable machine? That is what I have now. I miss my old fashioned one though. The new ones are digital and so complicated for me!
