A lot of researching going on, one day maybe we'll get lucky.

Well, how about some treatment research too?

"Dr. Utpal Pal, an associate professor from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland, has been on the front lines in the war against Lyme disease for the last five years and is considered a worldwide leader on the subject. "

have you heard of him? i dont think i have.

"Borrelia is so interesting because it doesn't actually produce any toxins that we know of but induces an immune response in the body that causes inflammation," says Pal. "It also looks different inside each host it infects."

is this true?

"Inside his state-of-the-art lab, Pal's team grows Borrelia in test tubes, genetically modifies the pathogen, and uses it to infect ticks at different stages of development to figure out which components of the bacteria help it to survive."

gmo bb...that sounds a little scarey

"Pal is credited with identifying a number of proteins that contribute to Borrelia's robust nature and pinpointing genetic markers that could serve as new targets for diagnosis and prevention of Lyme disease. In this next phase of research, Pal and his team will work to further understand the biology of Borrelia and host responses during infection with the ultimate goal of creating a human vaccine."

ok-so thats where the money is coming from...lets solve our problems with a vaccine.

"Additionally, Pal is interested in developing a rapid, low-cost and reliable point-of-care test for infection."

ok-this could be good...the word reliable is in there.

"Currently, Lyme disease is diagnosed through a blood test but the results can take several days and often don't detect the bacteria in low levels at the initial stage of infection. "It's very important to invest time in diagnosis of Lyme disease because the sooner you know you have it, the easier it is to treat," explains Pal. If left untreated, advanced Lyme disease can cause serious complications such as arthritis, facial paralysis and heart palpitations."

and we can agree on some of that.

"A visiting assistant professor from Ondokuz Mayıs University in Turkey, Dr. Ozlem Buyuktanir, recently spent a year in Pal's lab and was able to create a prototype for a diagnostic test which can be executed at a doctor's office within a few minutes using a patient's blood sample. Pal and his collaborators plan to seek industry partners as well as federal funding to further this part of their research."

Hmmmmm.

"The most recent grant awarded by NIH will support five more years of Lyme disease research in Pal's lab. Pal and his team are optimistic that their efforts will one day contribute to the development of a vaccine and control the spread of Lyme disease in the United States."

yea for a vaccine and cheap reliable test in the doctors office...i dont know guys.

poppy...i guess treatment info wont be necessary since the vaccine will prevent it.

I always try and think positive; I hate to see people sick, some for their whole life.

I do believe a vaccine will be available sometime in the future, I just hope it's sooner than later.

Keep the faith!

Steve, do you know what happened with the last vaccine? It was pretty awful. Healthy ppl got disabled for life. I dont understand the reason why. It has to do with genes. My llmd told me i had the gene that would react to the vaccine.

I too hate to see ppl sick and hope the whole lyme problem can be solved.

I guess my anger comes from continually finding out how those with huge amounts of money(health ins companies, big pharma)
keep getting richer while hurting us more

Im getting very cynical. I dont like it

I do believe and am greatful for the research and work done by alan and eva, and dr. B and h and both j's, and the specialty labs and willie b. And many others.

I am aware of the first vaccine; I'm hoping they have learned from it.

I look at it like this...

People die each and every year from the flu vaccine, but the majority still get the shot.

But on that thought, I for one wouldn’t take a new vaccine for at least a year.

He is probably genetically modifying them to express certain genes then test the effects, to try to figure out what part does what. Mice bred in research are used the same way, they might lack a gene or be sucesptible to an ailment, etc.

As for industry funding, unfortunately the money is not in treatment but vaccine development I'd guess.

I'm not against a lyme vaccine per se, as it is a completely disabling pathogen. They would have a market for it.

I imagine the reason a malaria vaccine hasn't been made yet is the people who need it don't have money, so it's development is dependent on doners like the gates foundation.

If a lyme vaccine was safe, I would consider it as my chance of re infection is pretty high.

Well, if they find a vacine that can prevent this illness without sickening or disabling people, that would be great.

The researcher states that Bb does not give off toxins????Boy that conflicts with what the "other sides'" researchers are saying. So, that makes me suspicious. But at least they are understanding that inflammation is involved.

Also, what about the rest of us who have been sick for years? A vaccine wouldn't help us.

Why not make a vaccine against tick saliva? Ticks carry too many illness for researchers to keep up with.

Anyway, we can't give up hope. Maybe this time, they will get it right.

And I have heard about research going on to end Chronic Lyme. But they need to admit to the cyst form of lyme if they are going to make headway with this type of research, too.

Thanks for posting this.
