A little girl shared the secret with me of what makes someone a "real real good" teacher, as compared to the others. Thought you'd want to know.

She had a rough week- high fever- raging strep throat, throwing up, etc. and then on the first day back to school was knocked off the jungle gym and now has a cast on her arm. Explaining what happened she said...

When I fell on my arm it went like this (bending her arm at the elbow and pretending to lay on it on the ground). I sympathized, of course.

She said when she fell there was a teacher she liked there who helped her- then stopped to say- a "real real good one". She said the teacher was her friend and she really liked her. Then she said- "Do you know why she is such a good teacher?"

I said no, of course, and she said... I am laughing just thinking about it...

"Because she brought a hamster to class."

Yes, teachers, it's that simple.

OH wow... so I am in the top 1%!!! I nearly always had hamsters, mice or gerbils in the classroom. I even let the kids play with them. [Big Grin]

Each Friday, some lucky kid got to take them home for the weekend.

I'm feeling so good right now! [lol]

TC.. That's so sweet of you! (heart emoticon inserted here)

Hiker .. I was going to mention last night (but thought better of it) that I also had snakes in the room from time to time. At least they didn't hiss!!

We could "borrow" them from our regional service center to show the kids. It did not go over very well with the other teachers! [lol]

When the snakes would come in, they would put them by the teachers' mailboxes. I'd have people holler at me, "____, come get your snake!!" They may have added choice words too. HA!

One year I had a country kid bring in some hog-nosed snake eggs. He said he was sure they were safe because a few had already hatched. So we left them in a jar on my desk and we watched them hatch, one by one.

Can you imagine that happening in today's world? OH, for the good ole days!

Tutu--I used to have snakes as well. One escaped and the custodian said she found her and beat the living daylights out of the snake, but it turned out to be a pencil. I found the snake the next day or I would never have gotten back into good graces with the custodian.

I did have a kid who went deer hunting and wanted to bring in the heart and liver, which I said was fine. He shows up at the faculty workroom door asking for me one morning and out of the bag he pulls the deer head. The teacher who came and found me was not too happy. [Eek!]

A different "little girl"...

A little girl came to visit after school today (she wants to learn about plants).

I told her the name of one of the plants was “coontie”.

She said it must be filled with germs.

I said huh?

Then she said like what you get on your hands, cooties.

I smiled then explained it sounded close to that name, but it was really “coonties”.

She said the reason that I (be sure to get that “I”part, as in ME) said it wrong the first time is because when she was here at Christmas time I was younger and now I am getting a little older.

Gotta laugh, or boot her little butt out the door. HA!
