REALLY need a fan. Thought might as well get an air filter instead that will blow clean air.

I don't understand the ion, carbon, hepa, uv, etc. etc. stuff and don't really have the brain to learn it all right now. Tried reading a lot, but just got more scrambled brain. Enough!

Would like an effective and QUIET unit that blows air, but isn't bigger than a manatee or John Deer Tractor. I have some older ones like that already.

A filter that can be cleaned would be nice rather than pricy filters you must replace all the time.

Is there anyone who knows about this topic who can make suggestions as to brand and type? And inexpensive would be nice. My budget is next to nothing.

Many thanks!

My only filter is a UV contraption hooked to the blower on the furnace, so it works with heat and A.C. I only have to replace something in it every 4 or 5 years.

Otherwise I just put on a regular fan or use the ceiling fan and blow the dust around.

Sorry I am of no help. Good luck.

This is a good one- Holmes Desktop Purifier
Available on Amazon for $38.99 Sometimes I vacuum the filters or if they are shot I replace them.

I have another hepa filter machine that costs a lot more but I actually like the little one better even though it might not be better because it does not have UV light etc.

They both make noise but are adjustable noise wise.

The catch is that they will not keep you cooled down or oscillate a breeze. How about a chain of gadgets. lol
Put a fan in front of the Holmes Air Purifier.

i know alot tin...if you want my two cents. i cant hadle UV -the smell bugs me. marketing is a mess with them....i dont get it how they can lie so bad. on the mold sites i use we have a wonderful guy who is in the business and helps us sort the words out. the two i have come to rely on are alen t500 and honeywell extralarge room

the alen ppl were really good to me on the phone and shipped free

honeywell is also good on phone but i bought thru amazon prime-was much cheaper

im here if you have more questions...no mold ppl seem to like the alen...maybe because it is hepa but not true hepa...all i know is it works really well for me

honeywell has smaller cheaper ones too and are very economical, true hepa and last forever...i still have one 6 yrs old that works but i used it during remediation so save it for dirty jobs...i have two of the big ones and they do my 1000sf home and i have nasty bad mold air outside that sneaks in...the alen is very light to move around and has four different filters... i got the really expensive off gassing one when i bought a chair that off gassed so much i couldnt be in the room...alen fixed it in 2-3 days.

hmmmm. LN wont let me post link.

also i have two honeywell fans i paid about 12. each for. i expect them to last a long time.

ok...they let me post that one. thats the old one i have that lasted 6 yrs and is still runs.

Hiker said.. "Otherwise I just put on a regular fan or use the ceiling fan and blow the dust around."

HA! Funny you are. That's basically what I am doing now! Maybe a filter will help with the dust too, especially on a farm where plowing does kick it up.

You said lol, but actually that's not a bad idea. I looked up the unit you mentioned and it does look good. Going to check to see if there are larger ones that may blow harder. Thanks for the info.

Kayak- so nice of you to help! Thanks. I didn't know the smell I've gotten from some filters was the UV thing. Good to know.

And I remember that chair you had so much trouble with. Good to know the off gassing was fixed without having to send the chair back (again?).

I'll check out the ones you mentioned- honey well and alen. That narrows my search a good bit. Thanks!

And I might have more questions, so appreciate the offer to come back and ask. You are always so wonderful.

Here's a decent fix for a next to nothing budget:

Buy one of those cheap box fans - about $20

Buy a good quality HEPA filter that's the same dimension and duct tape it to the back of the fan.

I DID spend money on a pricey Austin Air unit that smells funny but like my cheap homemade one better!

Now why didn't I think of that?

I have been known to get out my scissors and put air filter pieces I got on sale over duct vents for heat in the winter, same kind of thing, but never thought of your idea for a fan and it is a great one WP.

I think it could work! It is getting a bit warm these days, even for me (90 plus degrees in bedroom- and humid), so that could work on already existing fans.

Thanks for that suggestion!

I'm still checking out the other leads too!

I didn't think of it either! Read about it on the internet.

It does work! I did it. And I'm not very handy. But I felt very industrious. : )

Occasionally it tips over or needs re-taping.. that's the only problem. Not bad at all for the price.

Good luck!

He HE HE TC

I bought a regular fan at Walmart like the old Galaxy fan.

Then duct tape on a furnace filter, the filtrete by 3M with the charcoal, reduces like everything, smoke, toxins, dust ,alergens,it works better than any thing else I ever bought.

I just read back up here and someone else all ready did post this thing.

Yes, WP- I'll feel like a mechanical genius when I do it too. Thanks for that suggestion.

Maddog- OK smarty pants! I never said I was the brightest bulb on the tree. ~smile~

I am still looking for the right filter (and $ to pay for it), so that suggestion will help. It's such a good idea I am going to do all the fans if I can, so was looking online for a large roll of filter stuff maybe that can be cut to size?

Got thinking today it is a bit stupid to wait till I get the big bucks needed for the project (doing all of them) while I sit here HOT!

So I will look for a filter for at least one fan tomorrow when I go out! More later!

You back home yet Maddog? BTW- My last email to you bounced. ??? And I sent the fish pics to Just Don like you asked, but my feeling is I must go to his trash basket or he just doesn't respond?
