About two months ago, someone asked about a gluten free & organic brand of oatmeal. I'd also been derailed in that search on and off for years. At that time I had found one brand but never got around to posting that or getting it: GF Harvest (brand)

Just ordered some stuff from VitaCost today and noticed a different company has three thicknesses. I ordered this one as the others were out of stock. Generally, the thicker the oats, the better for glycemic balance and longevity.

Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Organic Rolled Oats -- 32 oz

hope this helps. They are available at many vendors or their own website in Oregon.

Found the request. Amazed my memory on timing was spot on. Michael, your note here about some moldy oats but you did not say which brand. --

Don't know about the GF Harvest brand but whatever brand you had that was moldy, please share that . . . and also contact the company's main office. Could be a problem with the store or way they were handled / stored along the way - or cracks in pkg.

Bob's Red Mill has never disappointed me with any of their GF offerings. I think their GF org. oats are very new to market.

Thanks Keebler!

The GF brand was the one I had tried, and I found the quality poor, in that there was lots of pieces of things that just didn't look good in there. I spent a lot of time just picking through it before I cooked it, and ultimately decided my time was too valuable and I wouldn't do that anymore.

I actually did send the company a note, along with a sample of the pieces I found objectionable. It might have been nice if they had contacted me with their thoughts on what they were, but I haven't heard from them.

I have a feeling the Bob's Red Mill offering is new. For years I've looked in stores and occasionally online to find them having GF but not organic, and organic but not GF, but indeed Vitacost does now offer Bob's Red Mill that is GF and organic.

These days I'm really enjoying the alternate breakfast I developed (teff/coconut flour bread), but I'll definitely have to get a bag of these next time I order from Vitacost to give a try.

Michael,

well, glad I held off ordering that GF Harvest. My oats should arrive tomorrow and I'll let you know how I find them. Bob's Red Mill, though, is excellent in all other items I've bought over 25 years. I've been at their place, too, and impressed with their cleanliness.

Bob's Red Mill GF Org. oats

Transferring the oats to my large class canisters, they look uniform and excellent condition.

They were out of the thicker ones and I got "quick cooking" - thinner than I would usually get. Cooking instructions would likely have turned then to mush, not my preference.

Yet, my hunch turned out great: no cooking required, actually.

I put 1/3 cup oats in large deep mug, added 2/3 cup boiling water, covered with ceramic dish and just waited 5 minutes. Perfect.

Actually, I was able to just scoop the hot water out of my soft boiled egg pan, so even easier. It was not even quite boiling at that point and sill worked very well.

Great to hear the quality is good.

I know sometimes multiple companies will sell something that was really sourced from the same place, so would not have been surprised if it was the same quality I had gotten.

Bob's Red Mill is never sourced from another place. It's always from their own plant in Milwaukie, Oregon. I've been there.

True about some other grains, foods, though. Some do outsource and different labels can be used. Good caution about that as a reminder the off brand of other oats there could be from any source.
