I was speaking to a young girl (about 6 yrs.old) about various States and what they are famous for (state flowers, birds, etc.), and somehow we got on the topic...
Oh I remember now- I was telling her about the pipeline and the protests in the Dakotas and how some nice people were donating "tiny houses" to keep the protesters warm now that winter was upon us.
And cute too, she asked, "What is a protest?" Anyhow...
While explaining protests I was telling her about Brown v. Board, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges and Harriet Tubman. I was going pretty deep into the topics and she was listening intently.
Interesting too she knew Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges by name before I mentioned them and what they were famous for. (Said she read it in a book. At her age I was reading See Tom Run, Run Tom Run.)
When I was talking about the Underground Railroad I told her Harriet Tubman was a hero to many people who were trying to make the long, really rough journey from the south to the north, often in the dark of night, and she did it over and over again to help save as many people as she could, etc. etc.
At some point I mentioned there were a lot of dangers she had to face and Harriet Tubman was just a small woman, not much taller than you are I said, then I continued with the Underground Railroad story and how the route ran through a lot of different states, etc.
When I was done she thought for a few moments, then looked at me and said with sincere concern...
"Didn't she drink her milk?"
HUH? What do you mean little girl?
"My daddy said if you drink all of your milk you will grow up to be big and strong. Maybe Harriet Tubman didn't get enough milk when she was a little girl."
Seems maybe Brown v. Board and the rich historic details of the Underground Railroad might have been a bit above a 6 year olds level of comprehension.
But, at least she got something out of it. Drink all of your milk or you'll be little like Harriet Tubman.
