You say: " I wish there was a way to get out of it."

then don't go. If you really do not feel like you will be comfortable to enjoy it, if you do really wish you not go, do not go.

That's the bottom line in face of the reality of the medical situation: your body, your decision.

No amount of lost money is worth you being miserable or in danger. UTIs can be dangerous and being on a Rx is no guarantee it's going to be magic, not with your history.

Rx for UTIs can also mean you must avoid sun and "bounced" sun, too, so even sitting on the deck in shade could be trouble.

And, your skin may be more reactive so the chemicals in sun screens could also be risky.

Clothing that is woven tight & "certified" so to speak to certain sun blockage would be required.

Rx can mean upset stomach and increasing chances of sea sickness. Be sure to take GINGER capsules with you if you go, though, to help counter that aspect.

As for his reaction, that's his matter. He could take a buddy or relative, perhaps - or go alone. I would still enjoy such a trip alone.

You might check with the cruise management ASAP about any options you might have for rebooking.

You did not "stupidly" book this vacation. I don't know where you ever got that idea. There is nothing stupid about it, or about you. It's just bad luck. It happens to all kinds of people.

Bottom line: loving consideration for what your body needs . . . and for what your spirit needs. If you don't go, be sure to come up with some ways to nurture yourself.

While I'm taking your word for it that you wish you could cancel . . . if you do really wish to go IF you feel better . . . I do hope that might work out but it's going to take a lot of planning for all the what ifs.

And it would be worth it to know you'd have all the bases covered to be able to go and enjoy such a beautiful place.

If you do go, be absolutely certain you've considered all things required for your safety & comfort in any circumstance of travel hiccups and that would include blocked toilets and low water.

Do what you can to stock up on a water supply as soon as you board so that you will have emergency stash of basics.

While such emergency is rare, it can happen and it would be devastating for someone with kidney issues. By planning like a Girl Scout in advance, if something happens, you will be as much in control as possible. That's always good.

After asking your options of the cruise management . . . if there is some time to still decide, you can plan to go but always know that you can't really know if your body will be able to just yet. You need a few days to be able to better determine.

No matter what you might decide, you've got to know that a plan is always open to change for the safety of your health. Trust your own judgment for what you need. You are the only person who can decide.

You do not have to convince another of this nor must he agree with your decision. He can think or feel anyway about it he wants. That's up to him.

What's up to you, your responsibility to yourself is just to make this decision for yourself. No explanation required other than that

"after careful consideration of the facts and requirements of travel [. . .] is what my plan is at this point in time.

Trust your own judgment for what you need.

You are the only person who can decide because you know how you are feeling, you have the background and experience with these things and can better determine.

I would talk to someone here about some of the things to consider for your safety while on a cruise (especially if there are any bumps in what you might expect).

I'm sure they would have some good suggestions for how to be prepared. Also get the name of good kidney / uro specialists where you will be docking along the way.

Oh, while I suggest avoiding all wipes and using a nice soothing balm / salve for topical comfort, if you do use something like a wipe, do not flush either at home, or in any toilet, especially on a ship. Clogged toilets and pipes down the line can happen so even if it seems to flush okay, that's no guarantee that it won't clog up later.

These wipes are causing major issues with waste water systems in many places. And I have to wonder if they aren't the reason for some of the clogged toilets on cruises in recent years.

The materials used in wipes do not break down. They just clog.

check everything you use for:

methyllisothiazolinone, MI for short, Methyl Isethionate

A MYSTERIOUS RASH ON A WOMAN'S HANDS & LIPS STUMPED SPECIALISTS

- By Sandra G. Boodman - The Washington Post - July 28, 2014

Excerpts:

. . . At her second appointment Zirwas examined her back, confirming his hunch: The only strong reaction Omiatek displayed was to a chemical called

methyllisothiazolinone, MI for short, Methyl Isethionate

which is used in high concentration in hundreds of beauty and personal care products.

In Omiatek’s case, MI was in the new brand of “sensitive” baby wipes she had begun using a few weeks before the hand rash erupted. The pattern of the rash, which was on her right, dominant hand, matched the way one would use a wipe.

MI was also in the dishwashing soap she used as well as in her soap and shampoo. . . .

. . . estimates that about half of the approximately 300 MI allergy patients he has seen were using wipes. . . .

. . . Unlike shampoo or soap that is rinsed off, the substances in toilet wipes remain on the skin, in a part of the body where evaporation does not occur.

“It gets driven into the skin, perpetuating the problem,” said Zirwas, noting that it takes months for the rash to clear entirely after a patient stops using the product. . . .

. . . The concentration of MI in some personal-care products was increased about five years ago to replace other preservatives, including formaldehyde, which have been linked to health problems.

“People thought it was going to be” an effective replacement, Zirwas said, “but around two or three years ago, we started seeing an incredible increase in the number of people allergic to it.” . . .

. . . She also learned she was allergic to the brand of “sensitive baby sunscreen . . . .

This is in some Seventh Generation products, so be care to not assume "good" products are as good as they may claim. I was shocked to realize I'd been using products with this in it. When I switched to ACURE Shampoo, my scalp healed]

Look out for: methyllisothiazolinone - it's even in some "natural" soaps, even Seventh Generation. Best to avoid.

When I switched to Better Life "Dish It Out" instead, a rash on my hands got so much better.

Also switched out my Avalon bath gel that had harsh ingredients I had been aware of -- better with ACURE (mint is fairly calm scent. Their unscented smells awful, though).

I would avoid the pools and hot tubs like the plague. They are a breeding ground for bacteria that could really put you under.

I went through a 4 year period of one UTI after another. Abx didn't touch the problem. One summer at a pool I thought I could sit on the step and just get my bottom and legs wet to cool down.

Dumb dumb dumb.....That's where all the little diaper tots and apparently bacteria hangs out. I would have been better off getting wet in the pool shower.

I hope you feel better and get to enjoy the cruise.

Pam
