Hi <<<<< Lymenet Family >>>>>,

We were awoken to the news that A gunman at Mandalay Bay Hotel shot into a crowd at a huge Country Concert.

So far fifty people are known dead and at least four hundred injured. This was down on 'The Strip'.

It is being called the worse mass shooting in US History, and a dark day for Country music. We don't know anymore yet.

It is a sad awful day for many...

We'll try to post more later...

Hi <<<<< Lymetoo, and randi' >>>>>,

We turned off the news for awhile, and not looking at front page net news. official for the moment count was 58 dead. Sadly more are likely to die[Several hundred wounded].

Trekc' went to deliver water to our church outreach groups, they will pass it out to police, ambulance, any First responders and workers who need it.We have folk in police chaplaincy, and various security.

So far church family is okay, a friend and her daughter were due to go to concert, they didn't get tickets. As our friend says, Gods provision/protection watching out for them.

Our Cardio Program folk are okay, we called to check. But they said hospitals are overflowing. I'd figure our cardio doctors and surgeons, and so many other doctors and surgeons in area, are fighting to help folks stay alive.

Can't watch right now, it makes me cry,but we could get some water to the workers. There'll be a blood drive soon, we cannot give blood but, many in our church family are able and try to do this yearly. Downtown is like a war zone.

We live quite a ways from the strip, and only go for special occasions. There are always concerts, conventions, and special events going on.
There was also a huge 'Foodie' event going on yesterday.

It seems no where is safe anymore, we continue to seek the Lords protection daily. The horrible happenings are world wide.

I realize there are many beliefs in our Lyme Family, something is wrong with/on this old earth. I want to know y'all are safe, as much as is possible.

Each Lymenet member is precious to TrekC' and I, we hold you in our hearts.

Hi <<<<< HW88 >>>>>,

Thanks the folk of this City can use the prayers right now,And anyone who was at the concert as well. People come here from all over the world.

A sad note, a friends work buddy's niece was shot in the leg, at the concert, she is recovering, but her friend was killed. Sometimes there is no answer to the -Why- questions.

Prayers going up for all involved in this mess. That's the only answer I know to give.

Just so very sad. I have another friend who lives part time in Vegas. Her daughter and some grandchildren live there also. They are all OK.

Just found out that one of my friends from San Antonio has a son who slept through it all on the 9th floor of Mandalay Bay!! [Eek!]

Thankfully, he texted her early this morning once he found out what happened. She had not yet heard about it.

Really?

To say that this had to be a "sore looser" - someone disappointed with the outcome of the 2016 presidential election?

But, first, the concert was not about any party affiliation or gathering. It was just a lot of good-hearted people who enjoyed music and getting together. There are plenty in both major parties who enjoy the artist in concert.

There are many who were disappointed with the election and I guarantee that factor is not the reason that someone would commit mass murder.

You also suggest that, perhaps, it was someone opposed to Nazis &/or the alt-right movement. The concert was not about any of that.

To even suggest either connection is beyond distasteful and serves to incite division. Not accurate nor correct. The shooter has left zero trace of any kinds of political leanings.

Apparently, like love, hate & rage can also transcend politics. Sigh. Still, more love & less hate sounds like a better idea.

And it will take coming together - not as members of one political party or another but as humans - in love & action to help resolve the problems with turning around this frequent pattern of mass murder.

I would certainly not buy into "some CIA Dude on Fox" * (or any other media outlet) who thinks this mass slaughter of 58 people to date and maiming of hundreds was the action of a "sore looser" regarding the 2016 election - or that of an "anti-fascist" - it's just a bunch of hot air aiming to cause disruption & more hate among voters.

* 10-7-17 In today's Washington Post that rumor was discounted. It took a reporter over 20 hours to trace it - and debunk both the sender and the photo they pulled out of thin air.

The URL is too long to post but you can search Google with the title below and cross search with the Washington Post.

A ‘liberal teacher’ became a conservative enemy for a viral Vegas tweet. But does she actually exist?

to say you don't have sympathy for the victims and that they deserve it...

I jus can't imagine what kind of person has such hatred for their fellow man than that.

and I disagree. people would apparently kill for something like a lost election. hell, they kill for tennis shoes...they don't need a reason.

that's the sad part.

if I were an alien I sure wouldn't come here...

Hi <<<<< All our LymeNet Family who are contributing to the topic >>>>>,

So far the official death count was 59, and folk injure that we've heard of is 520. Countless folk will need counseling, this was awful.

We may never know why this happened, but I will keep praying for the survivors, and the injured. Their lives will never be the same.

Practical things, that can help in such awful situations: there are places to take : fresh drinking water, non perishable foods, sanitary supplies and so on.

Blood drives[for those who are able to give] are in full swing, churches and charitable groups are helping with all manner of things. Hotels and motels, as well as airlines are helping with a variety of needs.

In any sitaution such as this, there needs to be places for family-folk dealing w/ the injured, and those who've died to stay, to eat, and to get counseling. Proud to say many in Las Vegas are helping in very many ways.

There were people here for the concert, who came from other countries, such as Canada, and many US states as well.

I hope and pray, they find the why of all this to give closure, to the families of those who died, I know of one of our policemen here in Vegas who was killed during this.

LymeNet Family, we come from different walks of life, and differing belief systems, but you are my family. Please keep on the look out, for anything suspicious [this type of thing, could happen anywhere, and has in other places already].

And watch for folk who are caring, and doing the right things too! There's a lot of them out there!

Now, it may well have been an act of sheer & utter hate.

However, it is vital to consider questions of biochemistry, physiology, etc. not at all as an excuse but as one way (of many) to possibly help prevent such in future.

The mystery of [the shooter's] brain

By David Eagleman - CNN- October 5, 2017

[The author directs the Center for Science and Law and is an adjunct professor of neuroscience at Stanford University.]

. . . But if it's possible to gain insight into his actions at a biological level, we might be in a better position to fend off such tragedies in the future. . . .

. . . Some readers will remember the University of Texas Tower Sniper, . . ., who killed 16 people in Austin just over half a century ago.

At autopsy, Whitman was discovered to have a tumor pressing against a part of his brain called the amygdala, which is involved in fear and aggression.

Is it possible that a similar pathology was happening in Paddock's brain? Although the likelihood of tumors is low in general, the hypothesis cannot be ruled out until autopsy.

It is important to note that a tumor isn't the only thing that can cause such changes in behavior: strokes or a traumatic brain injury can do the same. And one disorder in particular deserves mention: frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD).

Although the name is long, this simply refers to a deterioration of two lobes of the brain, the frontal and the temporal: two regions that underpin much of the decision-making and emotion that makes us social creatures.

As these brain areas degrade, people develop frontotemporal dementia (FTD) -- and this often comes hand-in-hand with violent, asocial behavior. When I heard Paddock's age, I immediately began to wonder about this, as the onset of the disease is typically in a person's late 50s. . . .

Damage to that area is sometimes referred to in the medical literature as an "acquired psychopathy." . . . .
[Full article at link above]

My thoughts:

Also to consider the recent information that a football player who recently died by suicide in his jail cell, and whom had committed murder, was found to have the worst case ever seen to date of CTE, a severe and cumulative brain injury common in football and boxing from hits to the head.

CTE can drastically change behavior.

The Las Vegas shooter had, by reports, been beaten up badly in his youth. Might some kind of injury "grown" or "matured" into a kind of CTE or something similar to cause brain and behavior issues?

In addition, circadian rhythm research is starting to shine more light (so to speak) on what happens to a brain that does not maintain a regular 24-hour sleep wake cycle. This would be something to consider in the Las Vegas case.

Answers, and research, matter - so that we might learn; so that we might prevent future tragedies.

Jason Aldean Covers Tom Petty As 'SNL' Responds To Las Vegas

By Linda Holmes - NPR - October 8, 2017

Saturday Night Live breaks its format only rarely.

The cold open sketch, which addresses one of the week's big news stories, is one of its immovable objects. But from time to time, they do change the structure — perhaps most famously when the show returned after September 11, when Paul Simon opened it singing "The Boxer" surrounded by New York City firefighters and police . . . .

. . . This Saturday night, SNL broke format again. The show opened on Jason Aldean . . . .

The shooter was not "stereotyping" those attending this country music concert for the type of music.

It could have been a bagpipe concert, apparently, for all the gunman cared. He had scouted out two other festivals in other cities, too, and each was of a different genre but lacked all the features of multiple targets he was after.

What may be the key here was the location, not the kind of music. This location seems chosen mostly for the mayhem, and for distraction for emergency crews to be overwhelmed by various sites attacked -

- and IMO (I've not read this, though) to inflict damage on people enjoying themselves in strong friendships (which, again IMO, might have been a driving factor in a jealous mind) but that could have been at any kind of concert, anywhere.

But the goal of hitting the aircraft fuel tanks close by was a major factor in the site choice.

He was also able to park his car within view / aim of hotel windows and it was loaded with explosives as well.

The trajectory aspects involved in this particular location over that of the other two considered might also have been a key factor with the target site. He'd given detailed thought to the trajectory.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/10/us/las-vegas-shooter-incendiary-rounds/index.html

CNN - Oct. 10, 2017

Explosion was a goal

. . . Las Vegas gunman . . . fired special "incendiary" bullets at a 43,000-barrel fuel tank in what investigators believe was an attempt to cause an explosion, two law enforcement sources told CNN.

Those types of rounds, meant to ignite what they hit, were found inside [the shooter's] room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and

near the fuel tank a short distance away on the grounds of McCarran International Airport, the sources said. . . .

Some of the descriptions sound a little suspicious, and no way to verify them, but people reported more shootings going on at the Bellagio and Paris Hotels at the same time.

People have also reported firing from lower floors of the Mandalay Bay hotel, meaning Paddock could have been set up. Many of his acquaintances said they didn't see it in his character to do something like this. I really don't know at this point.

Have no idea why people would want to pick on Las Vegas or people having a good time. No idea whatsoever.
