Yikes! What has happened to Lymenet's software that I can't copy and paste the link to the CDC website about this warning? Anyway, here is the CDC notice which was posted two days ago, on Feb. 20, 2018., on the CDC website.
Highlights
At this time, CDC recommends that people not consume kratom in any form because it could be contaminated with Salmonella. CDC’s recommendation may change as more information becomes available. Kratom is also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak. Kratom is a plant consumed for its stimulant effects and as an opioid substitute. CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella I 4,[5],12:b:- infections. Epidemiologic evidence indicates that kratom is a likely source of this multistate outbreak. Ill people in this outbreak report consuming kratom in pills, powder, or tea. No common brands or suppliers of kratom products have been identified at this time. Because no common source of Salmonella-contaminated kratom has been identified, CDC is recommending against consuming any kratom. Twenty-eight people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella I 4,[5],12:b:- have been reported from 20 states. Eleven hospitalizations have been reported. No deaths have been reported. This investigation is ongoing. CDC will provide updates when more information is available.
I've already posted this in our TxLyme Yahoo forum, and I encourage others to repost it in their states' Yahoo groups also because Kratom is a popular herbal remedy used for pain relief and for anxiety. (I first read about Kratom here at Lymenet a good while back.)
Salmonella is to not be taken lightly, especially for persons whose immune systems are already compromised by Bb and other TBIs, so please do your due diligence and repost this urgent notice far and wide, wherever other Lyme patients gather in CyberSpace.
PS to Moderators -- If this belongs in Medical, then please move it. I wasn't sure where to post it.

- This is good to remember also for any raw herbs purchased. Be sure to know the source (and their sources) and be confident in their quality measures. -

And on the other side of the issue, the FDA has been trying to outlaw kratom for a long time, as if it were a deadly herb, which it isn't at all. It's simply an herb that helps a lot of people that is in conflict with Big Pharma.
I'm NOT, of course, trying to defuse any warnings about salmonella! That's another issue altogether. It's unfortunate that it involves an herb that the powers that be want to take away as it is.
