Meg,

Noodling has been going on for decades. I'm originally from southern Missouri and some of my relatives used to noodle back in the 50's and 60's.

Now you know why I went into the military at such a young age. With relatives like mine, you had to escape somehow.

I never did try noodling, but I remember watching my uncle and cousins catch large flathead catfish that way.

I don't so much look down on them for doing this, but think it's amazing that there are such big fish in these waterways.

It's rather ingenious if you don't mind putting your fingers and life at risk [Big Grin]

Meg,

I don't look down on them either, heck I'm related to folks just like those in the articles.

I just think you got to have just a little problem with logic if you're willing to stick your hand down a very large fishes mouth for fun.

I've fished a lot of those same waters and there are very big snakes, snapping turtles and other animals that are looking forward to taking a hunk of flesh off a human (I've heard we taste just like chicken).

First time I saw a 'noodling' show I thought it was especially intriguing. Never thought of such things happening.

In the 'old' days they used to call it stump fishing here. They moved real slow, felt a cat and caught it by its gills. Story is there was one so big it threw two guys over in the water.. Course it was in a shallow creek,,,so anything is 'possible'.(Also remeber this is a 'FISH' story.

Will check out those noodling links later when I have an extra second to do just that!!!--jd--

Lymetoo,

I was born and raised in Jackson County Mo. My aunt and uncle owned a fishing camp on Bull Shoals in the late '50s & '60s. We also used to fish on Lake of the Ozarks and the Blue & Little Blue Rivers.

It's been about a 100 years since I was back there, but I still have really great memories of those days.
