Plug something else in the same outlet...does it work?
Could you have flipped a breaker?
Also, if the TV is 20 years old, it COULD have a fuse...
Sorry...I'm a tech analyst and spent way too much time as a tech support consultant in the past. I tend to trouble shoot everything...

Be careful when you open the back of your TV. There can be a residual charge left in the transformer, especially with an older model CRT TV. It can knock you on your butt.

Yeah- I stuck a screwdriver into the back of a TV to tighten something once. Sparks went flying and so did the screwdriver- almost hit one of the kids in the head.
I lost a lot of credibility as a Mom can fix anything, too.
I do have an old TV in storage (not the one I tried to fix)-which I will be glad to send to you if Stymie can get his moving truck to make a side trip.

It doesn't take cable-but if I remember correctly-that's not an issue for you.

DON: 20 YEARS ENTITLES YOU TO A N EW TV FROM WALMART.
JUST GOOD A FLAT SCREEN DIGITAL 20" not hdtv for$149.
they have gone down considerably in 20 years.
i would call the manufacture and complain. sometimes its just a burnt out tube. you go down to radio shack pull out all the tubes and have them tested.
oh sorry they got rid of that machine 18 years ago.
it really does not pay to buy a used set when you can get them on sale 19" for $140 . make sure you get a digital set. i know new concept for you and your rabbit ears. but come december all tv will be digital. then you have to buy a hundred dollar converter.
trust me the set i actually bought for the cabin is a 20" RCA WITH DVD BUILT IN it was $185 at wal mart regular price.
i go for the 75 inch sony really!!!!!!!
good luck tv shopping.

Tanks guys, I learned my lesson, dad, 20 years ago trying to fix a microwave. Unplugged from wall and everything. My burnt two fingers were numb for 6 months. Guy said he thought I took 50,000 volts from the ___whatever that thing was!!
I was HOPING not to HAVE to buy a new TV on short notice. I hate doing that,,,and I LIKE waiting for sales etc.
Stupid question from me AGAIN!! Will a vcr record a show even if the TV is kaput?? I know it records IF the TV is off, preprogramed, BUT this TV is definately OFF!!!???
I sure would HATE to miss "Poker after dark",,,even tho its a third time rerun!! I record it cause it comes on at 2 AM and watch it in the mornings.
Nudder stupid question,,,they have the percentages next to the hole card pics,,on a bigger screen TV does those teeny weeny numbers get bigger, big enough to actually read??
Also on the corner of the screen that way,,, I set in a chair right in front of the TV ,like our mothers didnt allow,,,and cant see the percentages or sometimes the cards or even suits. IS this my poor eyes failing me,,,or a TV problem???
My grandmother was blind the last 12-15 years of her life,,,my mother is nearly blind from macular degeneration,,,is this a BAD sign Mine is going too???
I also notice that when I go to church if I set half way back(church is long and narrow) I cant see faces any more in the front. Like the minister is all fuzzy or people walking back from communion.
ONLY happens in real low light conditions at say 100' or more. Outside I THINK I see normal but does take a bit more closer to see who is doing what these days!!
Are they gonna throw ME out too when I get broke???Like my TV???probably--just don--

Don...Yep, the VCR sounds like it's OK. But not the TV!
I dont' know about the flat screen TV being easier to see the numbers and suits on the cards. It might be.
I know my brother's flat screen HD makes everything look squashed vertically. Weird.
Hope you can gather the $$ for a new one. Sigh.

Wow...This is a national emergency. A lymie without a TV. Not good.
next you'll be driving Doc Daves furniture around aimlessly until you just happen upon his house in the middle of the night.
Concerned about geting a TV that will work with antenna's.
I know when I replaced my 20 some year old TV, the new one didn't work with the antenna.
But, I also was at a different location
If you need help with funds let us know.
WE could all chip in a few bucks and get you one.
I did a search on the net for the best or most popular TV with the most reliability.
Learned the flat screens, big screens, etc were not reliable....but that was a few years ago.
I really doubt whatever you purchase this time will last as long as our did in the past.
We certainly got our money's worth out of those 20 some year old TV's.

You may want to check out craig's list for a used one or post that you are wanting one. Do you have a 'trading post' website or phone in radio show where you can advertise for free? Sometimes people just sell them because they are moving or can't make payments or they want to upgrade, even if they still work.
Garage sales are also good for tv's. I bought a used one at a pawn shop in college dirt cheap. It was a 'steal'.

Could you try out the,"Free Stuff" site???
Some people buy the latest and greatest and then want to get rid of their 'old' stuff and maybe....just maybe, there might be a TV for free???
I tend to use my old stuff...still have a dial phone!

I thought it was going to be this winter, but looks like a year from now TV changes big time. links below, but it looks more complicated than the Medicare drug plans. Must be a ploy to sell new TVs.
February '09 - all TV signals going out will be HDTV and that current TVs will not work without a special converter box -
Our congress decided that our nation needed better quality TV reception (but forgot about the quality of programming) . . . but there is supposed to be financial help for folks to purchase the converter boxes that will be required. (Wow! I'm so glad they know how to identify our nation's needs)
good - old models will be cheap -
bad - you will have to add adapter/converter
Don't know about how well that will work out if the TV is not manufactured to have the High Definition to begin with. - geez - who knows if that will make EMFs better or worse? ---------------------- http://www.dtv.gov/ FCC sitefor DTV Transition
February 17, 2009 - Last Day of Analog Broadcasting
Title III--Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act - setting a firm date of February 17, 2009 for the cessation of Analog broadcasts.
DTV is a new type of broadcasting technology that will transform television as we now know it. DTV technology will allow broadcasters to offer television with movie-quality picture and CD-quality sound, along with a variety of other enhancements.
DTV technology can also be used to transmit large amounts of other data into the home, which may be accessible by using your computer or television set.

Dude, you're just getting old. Of course the preacher looks fuzzy, you're sleeping in church again.
What I did was move up to one of the first three rows. Not only can I now see the preacher, I can actually hear what he's saying (I didn't even know I was a Baptist until I moved up to the front, I thought I was Catholic for the longest time).
VCR should work even tho' TV is Tango Uniform (Tits Up like in Dead). But hey Don, you're TV's broke, you can't watch the recorded show either way.
Things lookin fuzzy in corners - old CRT screen are convex, makes things look fuzzy in corners. You need flat screen monitor TV (Plasma preferrably), not rear-projection.
Some distortion spoken of here may be from a wide-angle TV, makes things look out of proportion if program not broadcast in "letter-box" format.
If you need a small TV, send me your mailing address in PM. I've got an extra I'll send to you via UPS (seriously). It's only a 12", but I'd be glad to send it out to you.
It'll work until you can save the $$ to go first-class.

well Folks,,,the END of the story,,,Natioal Crisis averted,,,
I found another old hand me down TV for NOW!!! I looked at Wal-Mart last night while grocery shopping and got thouroghly confused by all the different TV's.
Whats the advantage of a flat screen?? Whats the advantage or projection big screens(I thought VERY poor picture quality compared to same tv setting right next to it!!)
The 'hardest' part of this whole thing was the moving of this old style 4' long console model thru the length of the house AFTER getting it off the back end of a 3' tall pickup,,,my crew of me, myself, and I gotter done!!
IF you had been a mouse in the corner,,,you may have laughed till your purple,,,but its done!! And it even WORKS!!!
Reason for waiting is I want to price them in the BIG city 120 miles away,,,,plus wait till I get to someplace I can hook up to hi def cable,,,instead of a floppy whooppy antennae that only works half the time,,,reasonably well!!
Besides prices HAVE come down alot lately,,,hoping they get lower yet before I NEED to buy one.
I saw a BIG 55" hi def big screen (on GOOD cable)last night,,,NOT sure I need all that,,,but was NICE!!!
Thanks so much for all the suppport!!being--just don--

Good to hear you have something to make due until you decide on something more permanent.
