Controlling ticks on your property.
I recently read about a lady that was using Ivermectin (Ivomec) treated corn to control ticks on her property. Ivermectin is a commonly used "dewormer" for cattle, sheep, goats etc..
To get rid of the ticks on her property this lady put Ivermectin on some wildlife feed such as processed soybeans or corn.
This method is described by USDA on the following web page:
You want to apply 2ML of Ivermectin "pour on" for each pound of corn, or other feed carrier used. You should count on using 1lb of treated corn for each 100 lb of deer or other species you expect to feed.
So if you think that you are feeding TEN 125lb deer on your property then you should apply 12.5 pounds of treated corn where the deer and other wildlife can get at it. When that is gone, do it again.
Note: Ivermectin has been found to have adverse reactions with collie dogs and should not be applied where they might consume it or come in contact with it.
And Ivermectin should not be placed near ponds or creeks since fish are not one of the intended species for consuming Ivermectin.
Ivermectin,is relatively inexpensive and can found in most farm stores. The USDA recommends the "pour on" formula.
The USDA has reported a 100% reduction of all forms of ticks within a short while of feeding the wildlife in a given area.
I personally, have not tried this method for controlling ticks so I don't know how effective this method is. I just thought that I would pass this info along to others.
