Surprised not to see this subject posted yet...
I think Iran's Supreme Leader (Supreme Pizza) will eventually fall, along with Pres. AhMADinejad.
The Iranian general population, at least in and about Tehran is quite well educated and know that unless major changes are made, their lives won't amount to a hill of beans. It might not be constant riots in the streets, but guerilla warfare is the name of the game; bombing Rep. Guard outposts, police stations and various assassinations (too many asses there?), etc., etc.
The genie is out of the bottle, the cat out of the bag, the horse out of the barn.

"Will the people of Iran gain control?"...my opinion no, not while the mullahs have so much power in the government..religious fanaticism at it's best.
No wonder church and state should be separate in any country in the world.
Edited to add that my thoughts and prayers are also with the Iranian people, may they find some solace in the fact that the world supports them, not the corrupt and opressive gov't. How's that for an opinion?

The Iranian people overthrew The Shah, but you don't think them capable of overthrowing The Supreme Pizza and his gang? Granted, it won't be done overnight, but since The Iranians have a long-standing history of overthrowing various rulers / dictators, I see no reason why the prevailing bunch should be any different. Please clarify your view.

GOod questions ping - though I'm too sick to follow politics right now I don't have enough info to give you a proper answer.
I may be wrong but I believe the Shah (and his family) fled Iran when the Ayotallah came into power - remember the US hostage taking?
In other words they exchanged one oppressive regime (ie: the Shah backed by the US) for another - one "pseudo-westernized" for an "Islamic state".
I could be wrong, too young to remember much but you ask some good questions maybe someone else can answer!

btmb03 - The intent of the discussion is not necessarily one of right or wrong, just ideas and discussion.
The Ayatollah did not come back into Iran until just after the Shah left. I remember the situation with the Shah because the large Iranian population where I was living at the time was very politely distributing petitions and asking us for support, as they claimed that the Shah was imprisioning and murdering members of their families. Then, when the Shah was overthrown and the hostages taken, the very people that refused to sign (or even read) the petitions acted shocked; as though they couldn't imagine why or how this could have happened.
My opinion - We have a new generation in Iran. People born after the reign of the Shah. They want to be part of the world community, do business with "The West" and improve their lives. These are well educated people. I think that they know they'd better fight (and quite possibly die) now, or never see a future for themselves, or their children.
I think this is the beginning of the end for the Supreme Pizza and his gang.

Ping - you obviously are very well informed. I truly hope Iran can get a better gov't...that's what everyone felt about Afghanistan and see what a mess it still is.
Karzai ended up being a "puppet" of the US and completely at the mercy of violent religious fanatics like the world has never seen - and don't even get me started with the oppression towards women.
Beautiful, ancient cultures, philosophy, poetry, music - ravaged by sad events. So sad.

While I'm somewhat informed, I'm no more of an expert that you are, which makes it a wonderful thing that we have the freedom (at least right now) to be able to talk about these things.
I completely agree with your assessment of the treatment of women and hope the Iranian people (note that women have been heavily involved in this uprising) are able to eventually make the needed changes to correct this horrible situation.
Interesting what you say about Karzai being the "puppet of the US" because that's the same thing the Iranian's said about the Shah some 30+ years ago, before his overthrow.

Hey ping, did you happen to see a documentary on Iran (not Christiane Amanpour though I have tremendous respect for her and other journalists)?
The documentary showed that plastic surgery is on the rise in Iran!! Many US/foreign trained Iranian ex-pat docs are returning there as there has been such a boom in nose jobs!!
Since a woman can show only her face they say they might as well make it beautiful. Yikes!
Emulating western values and ideals in such a way may not be a very good place to start!! Also many women feel it makes them more desirable in order to become a rich man's mistress since unemployment is so high. Interesting.
Sorry, off-topic but the role of women in ^any^ society is of interest to me!

unfortunately, no, i don't think they will. those in power control the military and will kill anyone who stands in their way.
already they are calling for the deaths of the demonstrators and others and will probably get it.
sad to say, there is always going to be war in that area of the world.

Yes, there will always be war in various countries in the Middle East and I agree that for the short term the Revolutionary Guard will pound people as hard as they can.
What I don't agree with is that the Mullahs, Pres and RG will always have control in Iran. When the labor strikes began in earnest in the 1970's (already starting again now), that is when the Shah fell and you can't kill everyone in the country.
This is the beginning of the end for the Theocracy of Iran. Granted, it might take a few years, but it took 30 years to get it into it's present, sorry state.
