I know it's the thought that counts, but when you recieve a wooden turtle for a Christmas gift, you pretty much have to dig deep for an appropiate response. (I still have that wooden turtle and have actually grown to love it).

My EX husband gave me a vacuum one year for Christmas. Bad move!!
My current husband knows better than to give me anything that plugs-in.

How about pajamas I never wore?? Boring, huh!? My FIL bought them and I appreciated his efforts... but I didn't ever wear them.
He actually bought me two pair and I DID wear one of them...still have them!
I guess I get pretty good gifts most of the time.

My step daughter was peeling back the Christmas wrapping paper on the presents enough to see what she was getting, then resealing (poorly). She wanted a tape player so I got a tape player box and put a waffle iron in and wrapped it up all fancy and put it under the tree. Christmas morning that was the first present she went for....A little revenge now and again is good for the soul!

I just remembered the obviously recycled box of body powder I once received during a gift exchange in a bowling league. It was so old the box it came in was yellowed. I don't even think Avon even carried the name anymore.

Being the oldest of 5 kids was fun because I got to experience Christmas through the younger ones eyes each year.
As I got older though, the focus changed .... from toys and fun things as gifts ... to getting something more practical from Santa.
One year I'd hoped for some new camping gear to outfit my brand new van so I could do some traveling to parks.
But let me tell you... you REALLY need to watch what you wish for.
On Christmas morning we all started opening packages and I was excited because mine was in a really big box.
As I unwrapped the paper and took a peek at the box ... I kinda wrinkled up my face in a questioning manner and quietly said huh?
And as I pulled off more wrapping paper I was thinking Santa must have just used that box to put other stuff in... cause that can't be MY Christmas gift.
Well, it was my gift. It was a portable toilet.
So, while that was a nice gift and was much appreciated on more than one occasion...
While all the younger kids played with their toys and giggled and had fun throughout the holiday....
All I could do was sit on my new porta-potty, as it sat there in the living room, and pretend I was having fun too!

Funny story, though.
One year I gave my little nephew a multi-pack of batteries. Sure, there was the "real" gift, too, but you know what---never before OR after have I ever recieved such the happy reaction as I did when he opened those batteries. His parents (like mine, when I was a kid) had the habit of buying gifts but forgetting the batteries. So....my "fake" gift was exactly what he wanted. My mother gets me pretty bras and underwear every year, and I have to open them in front of everyone. Not so bad, until the year both of my daughters brought home their college boyfriends for the holidays. I thought, surely my mom wouldn't do that to me under the circumstances....guess again!!!
We should also do a thread on the funnest tradition you have for the holidays. My dad buys me the ugliest, silliest slippers he can find, and waits with his camera while I open the gift. I have had ugly old man ones, alligator ones, a blue pair of BIGFOOT paws/feet with nails and everything, etc. etc. I LOVE it!!! He laughs his head off, and I can imagine him shopping all year for just the right pair!

And the fact he laughs... priceless.
As for the toilet... it WAS handy when I finally got to go camping again.. but HEY! A toilet for Christmas?
That was funny!
Oh.. and in my stocking that year there was "special" toilet paper" too!

Yo Sick Tick...
I have a quick break while it's nap time here ... so thought I'd come tell you about my special Christmas present.
And tell you that I thought of you yesterday.. even told the family about you!
I just HAD to laugh about those ugly slippers you got, didn't I?
And you know what they say about "paybacks" don't you? Well, it's true.
My son decided that a nice pair of pj's would make a nice gift for his mom. Actually, he couldn't even tell me about when he first saw the ones he wanted to get me in the store without laughing.
And I couldn't figure out WHY he was laughing.... till I opened the box up and saw them.
They were the kind of pj's with FEET in them. And what do you think those feet looked like?
SOCK MONKEYS!!!
Yep, a one piece, bright blue blue blue pj suit, with sock monkey feet!
After he told me all the places he wanted me to wear them, the local bank, the grocery store, etc... and everyone had a good laugh...
I hung them over the front door.
He asked me why I did that...
I told him I put them there to ward off any evil Christmas spirits that might want to enter!

My darling 20 year old son got me nail polish this year as I requested. However he got me two bottles of the most godawful bright pink and dark crimson colors (expensive polish too.)
I blurted out, "is this Prostitute Pink?"
He replied, "Well, this house REALLY needs some more income!"

We don't do christmas anymore, but I do have a funny one to tell.
My Mom had her first wedding set made into another setting a long time ago(my Mom and Dad have been married for 53 years.) It is my most favorite piece of jewelery that she has.
Anyway, she was acting all happy, and kept saying that I was just going to LOVE my present. I really thought she was going to give me that ring.
When we went to open our presents, I opened up and my gift, and I was literally speechless. That doesn't happen often for me.
Inside the box was this AWFUL looking yard ornament made of of old metal. My Mom was grinning from ear to ear. It was supposed to be some kind of bird or something.
She REALLY thought it was the best gift ever. I still to this day do not know what the heck she was thinking.
BTW, I still don't have that ring. She said I could have it when she dies. I really want her to get to see me enjoy it, but oh well, I'd rather have my Mom!!

Sick Tick, that was great! TC, I do imagine you wear your new pajamas in style...but I doubt you wear them outside!
I got some cool gifts this year. I got a lap blanket with Texas bluebonnets on it and then went shopping for myself....gave myself a denim jacket from Coldwater Creek (half price!) that had the state of Texas embroidered on the back. It even contains a "Coldwater Creek" on the map!!!
