Responsibilities and duties of a Moderator
Do I qualify to be a Moderator? In order to be a volunteer Moderator, you need to be a regular visitor to the LymeNet Flash. You should be reliable and willing to provide us with some information about yourself, including your real name, location and e-mail address.
What's my job as a Moderator? Your job is to assist the forum Administrator's. Your main duties are listed below: * Enforce the rules of the LymeNet Flash as documented in the User Agreement and in the LymeNet Terms. * Move, close, delete and edit Topics, when appropriate. * Edit or delete individual posts, when appropriate. * Alert the Admin's to inappropriate posts and/or members who chronically break the Rules. * Help mediate any arguments between members and be available to answer general questions from them. * Keep conversations flowing in your assigned Forum.
What is an 'objectionable post?' The LymeNet Flash - User Agreement The LymeNet Flash - Terms
An objectionable post is one that is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law. The Moderator has the power to allow more - or less - leeway when he or she deems it appropriate. Entire Topics can be closed, moved or even deleted, individual posts can be edited or deleted, members can be banned.
What are the powers of a Moderator? Moderators can close, move or delete an entire Topic, if necessary. Moderators can edit or delete an individual post. Initially this may sound very complex and technical but it is actually quite easy. If in doubt please ask the Admin before doing something. A deleted Topic or post cannot be recovered.
Edit. An edited post text is changed. It can not be recovered. Close. Close a Topic. No more posting. Feature. Also known as "pin" or ``make sticky``. Puts a Topic at the top of a Forum. Delete. It's gone for good. Move. Moves a Topic to a new/different forum (with or without leaving a Closed copy in the original forum). * Note: You can only move, close, edit, delete or feature in the Forum(s) that you are an assigned Moderator.
Under what circumstances can I delete a post or Topic? If the post or entire Topic is clearly a violation of the rules then the decision is easy - delete it, into the trash it goes. For minor offences - e.g. tone of a Topic getting out of hand, argumentative, you may want to simply post a message at the end of the Topic stating that members should be more civil to one another and then close the Topic.
What UserName should I use when acting as a moderator? You can keep your existing UserName or register a new one for when you are wearing your moderators hat. It's up to you.
How many Moderators are there per forum? There is no fixed number. There could be one, there could be more. It all depends on how busy a forum is.
General Guidelines for Moderators * Don't whine :-) Please don't go to the Administrator's with every little problem. As a Moderator you are given free reign in the forum you moderate and are expected to make most decisions on your own. However, if you need assistance, please go to the Administrators. * Don't close or delete Topics you don't agree with. Rather than censoring a post you don't agree with, reply with your own constructive counter-argument / criticism. * Don't delete Topics. Use the Close Topic function instead. Topics or posted replies should only be deleted if it blatantly goes against the rules. Use your judgment. * When moving a Topic make sure "Move Topic'', ``Delete topic from current forum after transferring`` and ``Notify topic starter of this move?'' is selected. This allows the original poster to find it. * Visit the board at least once a day if you can. Try to review all the new topics posted for each day in the forum you moderate. * If you feel that you can't keep up with this schedule, just let us know and you can be moved to a Forum with less traffic, or some more Moderators can be assigned to help you out. * Take part! Just because you are a Moderator doesn't mean you can't take part in a discussion. Try to facilitate a discussion.
