So, I had to call social services today to ask if my daughter and son's Medicaid eligibility would be affected by my upcoming marriage.
The caseworker was SO RUDE! Every time I call these people I get lectured or they argue with me the entire time. I just called to ask a simple question - If I'm married, does my husband's income affect my OTHER childrens' eligibility (he is not their biological father). Everything I am reading online says it shouldn't, the Virginia law seems to say it shouldn't, and the Medicaid handbook even seems to say it shouldn't, I just wanted confirmation from someone who (I thought) might have a better handle on these eligibility issues than I do.
Apparently I called the wrong person! Or, I should have called the computer, because that's who makes the eligibility determinations according to my caseworker! He said he couldn't tell me if they would be eligible until he put all the information into the computer and the computer told him if they were eligible or not.
Despite not being able to determine eligibility, he sure was able to give me his opinion on how "people like me" shouldn't be eligible for Medicaid in the first place because it's only supposed to be for people who are blind or disabled or have NO income. In Virginia, the "full coverage" groups DO include the blind and disabled, but also children, the elderly, and LOW income parents with children (notice this is not called "No income parents with children").
I know they are indundated with calls from basically every corner of the fringe dregs of society you can possibly imagine, but why, WHY, when confronted with a legitimate call from an educated person do they still insist on speaking to you as if you are a mentally handicapped, drunk, deaf, third grade dropout?
If you didn't want to deal with disadvantaged people all day long, why on earth did you become a caseworker for social services?
ugh!!!
