There was a sect of non speaking monks. Brother John had remained quiet for 10 years but after breakfast one day while passing another monk in the hallway he fell to temptation and sang, "Good morning!"

The other monk looked surprised and just nodded. Brother John was content.

Another 5 years passed and Brother John was again was overcome and saw the same monk just after lunch sang, "Good afternoon!"

The fellow monk just smiled and nodded. John was satisfied . . . for another 3 years when he succumbed to temptation again.

It was just before bedtime prayers and the other monk came down the hallway and brother John once again sang, "Good evening"

Before the other monk could respond the head Abbot came around the corner and said, (wait for it!)

"Someone chanted evening!"
