Hi Everyone,

I received news today that the state of WI. medical board is investigating Dr. Hoffmann MD for his lyme treatment protocol's. Those of you that don't know him he treats according to ILADS guidelines. Doc has treated for many years up here and successfully I might add. Apparently, one patient filed a complaint some time ago.

The state is possibly offering him a chance at avoiding a medical board proceeding if he essentially adheres to IDSA lyme treatment guidelines. Doc basically told them to "stick it". He would never abandon his patients. Doc has saved countless lives and people from a lifetime of agony.

He takes all comers, no child is refused and even those in severe chronic states are treated by Doc to at least restore some semblance of normalacy to their lives.

He carries an enormous patient load and charges so little for office visits that it defies belief he remains in business. People come from all over to be treated by Doc. Some staying at his little town's motel the previous night so they don't miss an early morning appointment. If their not feeling well, Doc will just go to the motel and see them.

The people in his little town think the world of Doc and he's treated most of them as it's an endemic area. He'll often walk across the street just to say "hi" to folks he knows and everybody in town recognizes Doc's old pickup truck.

Doc also saved my son's life when the rest of the "mainstream" medical establishment abandoned him.

We're taking a different tack here in WI. in assisting Doc. We'll be calling, faxing, e-mailing the lead investigator's office. We'll be calling our state representatives demanding that he be allowed to treat. We do not want this to get to a hearing. Their essentially kangaroo courts where it's rigged against lyme doc's.

If the state of WI. wants to abandon scores of extremely ill people to a lifetime of misery and early death then by God we'll go down yelling, kicking and screaming ! Frankly, I've had enough of this bulls*** !

Not only are we going to light up the switchboard but we're going to demand that our representatives adopt legislation protecting doctor's ! NOW !

The lead investigator on Dr. Hoffmann's case is Arthur Thexton. Wouldn't you know it, Ol' Art is buddy-buddy with Stephen Barrett and Robert Baratz from Quackwatch ! You can read all about it here:
http://biorenew.com/01_07_03_quackbusters_newest_victim__wisconsin__

I have authorization to disseminate the following info besides the fact Arthur Thexton is a public servant and paid by WI. taxpayers. The following info is public knowledge.

WI. Dept. of Regulation and Licensing - Arthur Thexton
e-mail: [email protected]
Phone: 608-266-9814
Fax: 608-266-2264

You can contact WI. state representatives here:
http://www.legis.state.wi.us/leginfo/contact/EmailDirectory.aspx?house=assembly

Everyone needs to do this. Please be respectful but firm when contacting Mr. Thexton's office. Wisconsin folks have assisted other state initiatives and we humbly ask for your help in our endeavor. Mentioning the difficulty in getting a diagnosis/treatment and then how long-term abx helped you would be a great help.

I've faxed my letter already pointing out the investigation of IDSA guidelines, etc. I also mentioned that a couple thousand lymies would probably be in touch.

Not one more child thrown into a lifetime of misery !
Not one more dedicated doctor kicked out of practice !
Not one more !
Not.............

Please keep this thread bumped to the top for a few days and by all means disseminate to your various groups.

I'm fed up and I want you to be fed up with me !

Call.
Fax.
E-Mail

God Bless.
-Mike

Thx for letting us know. The doc sounds wonderful. We will communicate...

I wonder how many states protect Lyme-treating doctors. I know California has a protection law. This is very important to have. Maybe it's the next step...

This just sickens me, another doctor under attack!! And the IDSA has the nerves to tell AG Blummenthal that doc's don't have to follow their guidelines.

I sure will contact Arthur Thexton office, but I have to cool off first. [Mad]

Mike- check your PM's.

Fellow Lymenetters- this is OUR fight too, wherever we may live or who we see.

The ISDA et at mean to force ALL our LLMD's out of practice.

If you're not angry about what is happening to Dr. H, you're not paying attention.

Please keep telling us what would be helpful to do, Mike!

Please call or fax the Wisc. Dept. of Justice {State Attorney General's Office} and ask them why their not investigating the IDSA lyme guidelines {like the CT. Attorney General is doing} and why the Dept. of Regulation is trying to revoke the license of Dr. Hoffmann who's patients would parish without his expert care.
WI. Dept. of Justice 608-266-1221
Fax 608-267-2779

Please call, the response has been ENORMOUS ! THANK YOU.

I have to go to work for a while, I'll be back on the puter later this afternoon. Keep contacting your legislators and Arthur Thexton's office and the State AG's office. My inbox was jammed packed this morning, the response was overwhelming. People are irate that Dr. Hoffmann is going through this. I've had offers of help from all the WORLD ! Yep, couple of foreign countries besides every end of this country. I'll be busy all weekend getting back to people.

Just thought you should know. Dr. Hoffmann will be visiting one of his patients today that needed surgery at the hospital.

The hospital is 100 miles away.

Just thought you should know what kind of man he is.

Together, lymies can secure proper diagnosis/treatment for all and protect our doctor's from harassment. We're going to win.
NOT ONE MORE !

I called both AG in WI and Arther Thexton's office.

AG in WI said it's not their dept..blah blah blah! Mr. Thexton's office listened to what I said, but told me they were not aware of the investigaion into the IDSA guidelines by the AG in CT. Frankly that sounded a little suspicious to me, hard to believe they don't know?

everything that has happened to the Lyme specialists in NY or CT effects other LL docs in EVERY state in our country, and so will the outcome of this case.

people really need to realize that political action and actions such as these really must be viewed as critically important to all of us equally, no matter where we live, whether we have children, whether we happen to prefer the LLMD's particular protocols or not, and no matter what our chosen treatment modalities may be.

this fight is about basic rights to choose your own medical standard of care. same rights anyone with any condition has.
that's it. these actions against docs for not following IDSA are a basic civil rights violation.
if you had cancer, could the state mandate that you chose chemo over radiation, or surgery over Chinese medicine for that matter??

i hope there is more national support for each individual case, no matter what state it is in.

Information on Blumenthols investigation into the IDSA guidelines, and the medico-legal rights to access to two standards of care ought to be relayed to the WI health aides and others who can help intervene on Doc's behalf, and also shared with each of our state reps in states where we "think there is no trouble".

I emailed and wrote this:

Dear Mr. Thexton,

I am aware of the investigation currently underway in WI of Dr. Hoffman. I also am aware that the investigation will be stopped if Dr. Hoffman promises to adhere to the IDSA treatment guidelines of Lyme Disease.
I just want you to know that I believe that this is VERY unethical. The IDSA put these guidelines out as a GUIDE only. They speak about successful treatments of the vast majority of lyme cases; unfortunately there are many individuals who were diagnosed too late to be cured by these treatments. Please realize that patients and doctors together assess the GUIDE in each individual case and make treatment decisions based upon the needs of each patient. The attorney general of CT is even investigating the IDSA guidelines to be sure that the treatment of these other more severe cases has not been ignored by excluding evidence and research about these other cases.
Please do the right thing and drop the investigation of Dr. Hoffman.

Allie. Excellent email to Thexton. Lymetutu. You're right. Let's take it to the streets! Bev, Mo, BZ all of you, let's declare war. I agree with Mike--NOT ONE MORE DOCTOR; NOT ONE MORE LYME PATIENT WITHOUT CORRECT TREATMENT!

No glum faces, ok? Let's rise to the challenge this time like lions instead of waiting for a kangaroo court we can't even appear in according to the state of Wisconsin.

Whew ! What a day !

The WI. Dept. of Licensing and Regulation's e-mail inbox is full or their server crashed. They are hearing you loud and clear !

We cannot begin to thank you wonderful people enough for your efforts. The outpouring of support is truly staggering.

I'll bet I went through 150 e-mails today. There are many others here in WI. working tirelessly on this project. There is much going on behind the scenes which I cannot divulge but your efforts are making a huge impact !!!!!!

The offers of support and assistance from individuals, groups and lymenetters has come from every nook and cranny of this country, even foreign nations as well.

Dr. Hoffmann is a true "country doctor", he doesn't even have a computer. I had the opportunity to speak with him this evening. He's simply overwhelmed by your support.

I can assure you that Doc is going to the mat on this one.
It's his contention that doctor's have the right to practice medicine in the best interest of their patients and not adhere to fraudulent guidelines.

While waiting for Doc to answer the phone this evening I had a million things running through my mind. My son Jesse's relapse, getting back to support group leaders, sending out e-mails, contacting legislators, was this situation stressing Doc, etc.

He picks up the phone and says "How's Jesse doing ?" Here's a man who's life is comng down around his ears, his practice in jeopardy, being witch-hunted by faceless bureaucrats and his only concern is if my son stopped herxing.

Please keep your letters handy as I may once again be requesting that you forward on your stories to other officials.

Thank you. I'm willing to bet most of you have no idea how powerful we all are, together. From what I witnessed today, it's staggering.

Wish I could elaborate more but in due time.

-Mike

Can we get this post moved permanently to the top?

I agree that we must not let this get into a Kangaroo Court type situation. What can we do to prevent this?

We need to lawfully give our drs. freedom to practice.

I know the legislature can act swiftly when it wants to, i.e. voting themselves raises in the middle of the night.

Since they are so concerned about public opinion, they need to realize how many people know about what is going on and care about Dr. H. No matter who you are, you can write or call our state congressmen. Say something to the effect,

"I am a United States citizen and I care about healthcare freedom. What is happening to Dr. H is wrong. He is following ILADS guidelines published at the National Clearinghouse.

Also, as far as the AG is concerned. He certainly does have some say & jurisdiction in this matter. We need to educate him!

We can't lose another LLMD. Especially Dr. H! Sound the battlecry! Enough is enough. This is where we draw the line in the sand! No more Mr. Nice guy as with Dr. J & Dr. J and others. The other side doesn't play fair! We cannot trust that the court will be anything more than a kangaroo court!

The IDSA says it's guidelines are only guidelines and physicians are free to practice as they wish. HOWEVER, in practice, this is not true. The drs. lose their licenses if they do not follow IDSA guidelines. Imagine the State offering to drop charges if Dr. H followed the IDSA guidelines. Isn't that proof that the IDSA guidelines are turning into state mandated law of the land?

Lonestar, your certainly not to late. We'll need "all hands on deck" come Monday. We're just getting rolling !

I'm aware of the pretense under which their harassing Doc. Makes the trumped up nonsense against Doc Jones look valid. Make no mistake about it, this is ALL about how he treats lyme patients.

Let's see, out of maybe 50 total LLMD's nationwide, currently 3 of them are being put through the ringer. That's 6% of LLMD's nationwide.

Think 6% of neurologists are under
investigation ?

6% of Rheumotologists ?

6% of ID doc's ?

6% of cardiologists ?

Yeah right.

Thanks for the links & phone #'s

John Bleiweiss, MD
Letter to Dr. Bleiweiss:
Dear Dr. Bleiweiss,

As you know, when we brought Noelle to you last fall, she was essentially incapacitated from the problems related to Lyme disease. The three months of treatment she had previously received from our local "Lyme expert" had failed to stem the progress of the disease, even despite the "magic" 28 days of IV antibiotics. While her previous doctor overlooked her actual condition and declared her "cured", you carefully assessed her condition and then attacked her illness. While she underwent a long and tumultuous period of progress and backsliding, your treatment has ultimately given her back her life, and she is now, essentially, symptom free.

Needless to say, we were shocked and saddened to learn, today, that you have decided to close your practice. We appreciate that this certainly had to be a most difficult decision for you. While Noelle's progress has been truly gratifying, there is always that fear in our hearts that she may again need the kind of concern and aggressive, individualized treatment you have given your Lyme patients. We feel we may never find a doctor who can replace your unselfish devotion to your patients' total health, nor your relentless efforts to better understand Lyme disease and its treatments. You can certainly be proud of your record for helping your patients, many of whom other doctors had considered hopeless and abandoned. Should you decide to reopen your practice in the future, please be sure to consider Noelle your patient.

On a more personal note, if there is a way that Gayle and I can help or support you, either now or in the future, please ask. We join your other patients who feel that we owe you so much that we could never repay you. God bless you for being there when Noelle needed you most. We all wish you best of health and luck as you proceed.

Postscript: Two days after the letter on the other side was written, Dr. John Bleiweiss was dead. Although he was "officially" considered a suicide victim, his death was actually the result of the Lyme controversy. He was persecuted as a doctor who healed his patients rather than follow the ineffective treatment regimens dictated by the insurance companies and their high profile doctors.

Dr. Bleiweiss, a Lyme victim himself, had dedicated his life to helping his Lyme patients. He had helped more than 1200 of the most seriously ill Lyme victims return to useful and productive lives by carefully customizing antibiotic treatments for each and teaching them how to strengthen their immune systems by taking vitamins, eating properly, and taking care of themselves, He had patients that routinely came from as far away as Florida and Europe. Many of these patients, including my daughter, believe he had saved their lives....Dr. Bleiweiss recognized that the medical dogma on Lyme treatment did not lead to a "cure" for most victims. His research in medical journals was relentless as he worked to define new treatment protocols that would help his tough cases.

Often he told my daughter, Noelle, that she was one of his "most difficult cases"...she always seemed to react differently to the treatment than he expected. But, HE NEVER GAVE UP ON HER, as the other doctors had done. Despite medical evidence that Noelle had Lyme disease for ten years, she was NOT diagnosed until age 15. Then, her first two doctors treated her for 4 months for "sinus infections" and 4 months for Lyme using oral and IV antibiotics(for 28 days). She was declared "cured" even though she was CLEARLY WORSE after their treatments!!! But then Dr. Bleiweiss watched her closely as he treated her with a variety of oral antibiotics (the insurance company would not pay for additional IV antibiotics). After five months, she finally began to improve. He was so pleased to see her disease go into remission and so proud as she went back to high school and did so well!!! I can still remember the elated look on his face as she reported reduced neurological and other symptoms at each subsequent visit....

We later learned that Dr. Bleiweiss had been under attack for OVER SEVEN YEARS. Trumped up charges that had been disproved time and again in the courts brought him to the verge of financial ruin. Then, on Saturday, August12, 1995, the "Trenton Times" published an article: "State seeks license of Lyme disease Doctor". The information, leaked to the press, AGAIN made the same old charges and indicated that he would lose his license! He was closing his office, clearly in response to this renewed legal attack. But then, seeing the article early that day, he was pushed to commit suicide. Yes, it was technically the bullet that ended his life, but it was those who have turned to the political "dark side" of the Lyme controversy that REALLY pulled the trigger, killing this gifted healer.

No one will ever know what contribution Dr. Bleiweiss could yet have made to the sufferers of Lyme and other diseases. Unfortunately, his genius died with him. Publication of his book was also blocked, somehow, so even that legacy is now gone forever. After the death of Dr. Bleiweiss, my daughter relapsed twice, but she still managed to make up 1.5 years of high school.. We were SO PROUD when she graduated, on schedule, and in the to 10% of her class. We know that "Dr. B." would have been proud of her, as well. She is now doing very well in college...continues to suffer from Lyme symptoms...and we still live in fear that a relapse might come at any time.

Since Dr. Bleiweiss' death, the Lyme epidemic has continued. The current official statistics are misleading, however, since many doctors no longer report their Lyme cases for fear of being attacked, as was Dr. Bleiweiss. Every day, we think of "Dr. B.". He could have helped many other friends and family members who are now also Lyme victims. One friend recently died from Lyme disease due to the arrogant ignorance of HIS doctor, who WOULDN'T TREAT HIM! Even after 2 years, remembering the death of "Dr. B" still brings tears to our eyes...after all HE WAS THE DOCTOR WHO SAVED OUR DAUGHTER'S LIFE...and when He needed us, we could not help save his life!

When will the politics of Lyme disease END so this terrible disease will be the subject of the attack, rather than the doctors who treat Lyme aggressively????

sarah, were you planning on putting this on LYME OBITUARIES post? also, it sure would help neuro lymies to break up your LONG solid blocks of text into smaller paragraphs that we can comprehend.

what you posted; no way could i begin to follow that and i'm not copying/pasting/editing to do so. [Big Grin]

it doesn't go here with the WISC. DR. under charges in my humble opinion.

Thank-you, Sarah, for reminding us of what Lyme docs go through and of what can happen.

When people ask WHY they can't find a doc to treat them for Lyme and coinfections....well, there it is!

Hello Everyone, 6-25-07

Mike here again from the WI. Lyme Groups.
Monday's Actions !!!!

Update on Dr. Hoffmann:

As of this writing the state has not filed any formal charges against Dr. Hoffmann. They stated previously that if Dr. Hoffmann did not agree to their stipulations that formal charges would be forthcoming. So far, thay haven't filed them. It's our hope that through your vociferous support that none will be filed. However, at this point we just don't know what the state's intention is.

It's been hot & humid here in northern WI. which amplifies the other main pest in this state besides ticks. Mosquitos ! We have mosquito's up here that can wear saddles !

ALL of us here are extremely thankful to you for your efforts.

On Monday we'll be contacting the WI. Dept. of Regulation & Licensing's Medical Board. {Thomas Ryan} to plead our case.

{If you've written letters previously & saved those, they will suffice to Mr. Ryan.}

1. Patients of Dr. Hoffmann please emphasize how he has helped you, how you had to go to multiple doctor's with NO diagnosis and that he has you on the road to recovery now.

Additionally, I will be adding in my personal letter to Mr. Ryan that if the WI. Med Board persists in it's attempts to limit Dr. Hoffmann in his ability to adequately treat his patients, then one can only assume that Mr. Ryan is more knowlegeable about lyme treatment than Dr. Hoffmann is and that I'll be glad to refer the scores of seriously ill people who contact me regularly for assistance, to his office.

2. Patients that DO NOT see Dr. Hoffmann, please inform Thomas Ryan how your doctor, utilizing ILADS treatment protocol's has saved your life and led you to recovery.

Please put "Urgent: Thomas Ryan" in the subject line of your e-mail.

Just a short update. As of 7/14/07 the state of Wisconsin has not filed formal charges against Dr. Hoffmann. We're remaining vigilant though as we are not certain of the state's intentions at this point.

Hello Everyone,

We'll be sending out our letters, fax's and e-mails in support of Dr. Hoffmann to Sen. Tim Carpenter. Sen. Carpenter represents the Milwaukee area and is the chair of the Public Health Committee in the Wisconsin Senate.

Could there be a more pressing need in public health than the fact that scores of WI. residents are becoming ill because of IDSA negligence and Doctor incompetence ?

In your letters, it's important to state:

* Why you've become so ill.
* Wisconsin needs legislation protecting doctor's so they can treat this disease adequately.

EVERY SINGLE LYME-INFECTED RESIDENT OF WISCONSIN NEEDS TO WRITE, DEMANDING DOCTOR'S ARE PROTECTED IN THIS STATE SO THEY CAN TREAT ADEQUATELY !
IF NOT FOR YOURSELVES, HOW ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN ?

You must be the change you want to see in the world.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
-Gandhi

Additionally, the Wisconsin Dept. of Regulation and Licensing has invited WI. folks to file formal complaints against doctor's that may have misdiagnosed you, if so inclined. Many are filing against the doctor's that misdiagnosed them. Mr. Ryan stated that we could file at the website http://drl.wi.gov/index.htm Look to the left of the page for "complaints" to download the form.

State med boards and licensing regulatory agencies have an obligation to follow up on complaints made by the public. With this in mind, why couldn't state residents file a complaint over the IDSA guidelines with their individual med boards ?

This doctored science, more than anything else, is responsible for folks attaining a chronic state of Bb infection. We have mountains of documentation supporting ILADS guidelines but it's all ignored by the IDSA. If this isn't cause for a formal complaint to a state med board then I don't know what is. - Mike

I called to discuss the situation. It is so important for us to be communicating with political reps about Lyme/co's and those we need on the frontlines to be treating it.

I hope that word is getting out about what is going on in Wisconsin. This thread, for instance, seems to have been stuck in place for several days without further posts.

Since Lymenet has repeatedly been unavailable for long periods at critical times, I would suggest that all of us make sure that we have access to alternate ways of obtaining updates on time-sensitive news affecting Lyme patients.

Hi NP40,

I remember back what, a couple of years ago now when you were kind enough to provide Dr. H's name to me for my friend's boss in Minnesota.

Remember, he ended up going to the Mayo!

Yep, I tried to warn him but....

So, can even someone in Alabama help? I'm going to email or call anyways and put in my 2 cents worth.

I owe you one.
