..

This was in 5-9-08 local newspaper; how timely!!

Signs should be placed BEHIND THE PROPERTY LINE and are prohibited in the public right of way,

which includes MEDIANS, CUL-DE-SAC PARKING CIRCLES AND THE AREAS BETWEEN THE CURB AND SIDEWALK.

For properties WITHOUT sidewalks, the right of way width may vary, but is usually the first 14.5 feet BEHIND the CURB in RESIDENTIAL neighborhoods.

Signs NEVER should BLOCK VIEW of oncoming traffic.

At each intersection, there is a 20' by 20' "visibility triange" which is measured along the property line.

Items within the visibility triangle must be LESS than 36" ABOVE the street gutter.

TEMPORTY SIGNS may NOT be displayed for MORE than 90 CONSECUTIVE days without removal or replacement!!

This is an important issue because there are safety implications to proper sign placement said our local asst. city attorney.

Residents may NOT be aware of the rules, and we use those opportunities to educate them on the law.

Betty,

Thank you so much for posting this! I would just like to add that every city has different zoning laws relating to sign ordinances so you should check your specific city's sign code for how to legally erect signs.

It's interesting timing because I am currently reviewing sign ordinances for the work that I am doing, otherwise I would not know about something so boring! [Big Grin]

You can usually find your city's sign ordinances online, accessible from the city's official website.

If you live outside the bounds of a city, you can go to your county (or parish, I guess, if applicable, yeah?) website and they should have county sign ordinances posted there as well.

[Smile]

Alison

We are really swamped here on teh East Coast. I'm wondering if someone here could just call three towns in New Jersey to see what their sign restrictions are. That would be an enormous help.

The towns are Long Branch, West Long Branch and Tintom Falls.

You guys on Lymeeet are great at pitching in, so I hope it's okay if we dump this in your lap to handle and let us know so we might be able to put signs on the LymeRights website that people could run off and use for the lawn to make it easier.

We are on a strict time limit, so if someone could do this now it would be great. Could you private email me if you do it.
Thanks,
Ellen

Can someone e-mail this to Ellen. Since this e-mail is my work, I can't receive private e-mails & so can't send them either:

City of Long Branch sign ordinance exemptions from sign ordinance follows:

G. Political signs; subject, however, to the following restrictions: [Amended 7-14-1983 by Ord.
No. 1110; 3-11-1986 by Ord. No. 1267]

(1) Only one sign per candidate or public issue shall be allowed on each property. The one
sign permitted may be two-sided. When one or more candidates run on a ticket, and have
campaign signs printed jointly, that sign listing the names of the candidates on the ticket
shall be considered the one sign permissible for the ticket.

(2) No political sign may be erected more than 45 days prior to an election and must be
removed no later than 10 days after an election.

(3) No political signs may be placed on or attached to any public property, utility pole,
traffic sign or street corner marker.

(4) No person shall place or attach any political signs on or to any occupied private property
without first obtaining the permission of the property owner of that property.

(5) No person shall place or attach any political sign on or to any vacant property or
unoccupied or abandoned buildings or structures without first obtaining the written
permission of the owner of that property, building or structure.

Ellen - I am working on finding out about Tinton Falls sign ordinance, but cannot find info. for West Long Branch.

Mary, thanks so much for doing this. We should have something up on the LymeRights website soon about lawn signs, now that we know they are permissible

And, Betty, thanks for getting this message to me.
Thanks,
Ellen
