Hi folks, I just wanted to let you know about the day Rosemary and I spent Pallone's district in Long Branch on Saturday, trying to get people to call Frank Pallone to get him to schedule a Lyme hearing.
And I want to encourage you all to sign up for a day of doing this to get our bill passed.
We gave out leaflets and people were amazingly receptive. Just about everyone laughed when we told them the IDSA said there was no such thing as chronic Lyme disease. Many, many people said they had just been reading about the issue and the protest in the newspaper. (Thank you soooo much, protesters). And almost everyone said they would call Pallone.
One woman told Rosemary that she knew "Frank" for years and was very upset to hear what he was doing. She said she would "have a talk with Frank" at church on Sunday because she thought funding for Lyme was very important.
There was a mime at the beachfront who heard me giving my spiel to passersby and she purposefully extended her arm with an open hand in which I put a flier. And she stood there like a statue holding our flyer out for all to see.
Plus, the beachfront area is lovely.
I may be able to go back on Wednesday, if I'm feeling okay. It would be very helpful to have someone go with me or meet me there. or to have peopple volunteer for other days.
We should keep this up as much as possible. If we can start enough buzz in Pallone's neighborhood he may finally get it that there is a lot of popular support for this bill and it pays for him to allow it out of committee.
Please let me know if you can volunteer for "a day at the beach" in Pallone's district in Long Branch. Ellen
Since Frank is up for reelection, and he doesn't seem to care about our bill (not many of his constituents I guess he figures), this will be most effective. Taking it to his constituents directly. He's not going to like that.
I live close by but can't drive otherwise I'd sign on to help you in a minute. My husband brought me to the protest though. If I can help with something from home (calls?) let me know.

Have any of you in Pallone's district thought about putting up a sign in your yard, something to the effect of..."Pallone doesn't care that my child is sick" I'm sure there are lots of more compelling slogans listed in this forum somewhere, but yard signs could be effective, too!!

This was in 5-9-08 local newspaper; how timely!!
Signs should be placed BEHIND THE PROPERTY LINE and are prohibited in the public right of way,
which includes MEDIANS, CUL-DE-SAC PARKING CIRCLES AND THE AREAS BETWEEN THE CURB AND SIDEWALK.
For properties WITHOUT sidewalks, the right of way width may vary, but is usually the first 14.5 feet BEHIND the CURB in RESIDENTIAL neighborhoods.
Signs NEVER should BLOCK VIEW of oncoming traffic.
At each intersection, there is a 20' by 20' "visibility triange" which is measured along the property line.
Items within the visibility triangle must be LESS than 36" ABOVE the street gutter.
TEMPORTY SIGNS may NOT be displayed for MORE than 90 CONSECUTIVE days without removal or replacement!!
This is an important issue because there are safety implications to proper sign placement said our local asst. city attorney.
Residents may NOT be aware of the rules, and we use those opportunities to educate them on the law.

Njgirl, so glad you were able to get to the protest. If you live nearby Pallone's district, if you know people within his district it would be great to contact them.
You don't need to live in his district, however, for your calls to Pallone to make a difference. So please call everyone you know , particularly the NJ resident, and have them call Pallone.
And if your husband can take you to Long Branch beach area on a weekend, the LymeRights committee will soon be putting out a flyer you can run off and hand out there. I have to say that there are not many places where it's so pleasant to be an activist as at Long Branch beach.
Docjen, your idea about lawn signs is terrific. I brought it to the LymeRights committee and they will be preparing a lawn sign that people can just print out to make it easier for them to do this.
Please, everyone, keep making noise. Call Pallone, write him, drop in at his office to complain.... whatever you can do. I have a feeling that the next time I go there to leaflet, I will be legitimately able to pass out in his office before going home. Ellen

What you need to do is first off, someone needs to put together a very comprehensive but concise website detailing all the information about what Pallone is doing to block this bill, including information about the bill, and information about the IDSA, but primarily focusing on Pallone's actions. Perhaps somewhere on the LymeRights site - it needs to have a very simple and easy to remember URL also.
Then have bumperstickers made that say
PALLONE HATES SICK PEOPLE (URL for site)
You can use the same URL on the yard signs and fliers and such.
Simple and memorable, and will probably get enough people's interest for them to check out the website for more info.
Imagine the bumperstickers showing up on cars all over Pallone's district, might even get media attention.
And with a concise website with all the details, people can find out what they can do to help.
This would probably also get Pallone's attention and concern in regarding his upcoming re-election bid.
Give out the bumperstickers along with the fliers, the more that are out there the better.
Someone needs to be willing to organize this, but if that happens, let us know how we can donate to help defray the costs of getting bumperstickers printed out - I am definitely willing to contribute to something like this. -karen

Hi CS, I love the bumper sticker idea. I'm going to send it to the other committee members now.
The Lyme Rights site is being brought up to date right now, so check tomorrow. We will also put out a post to everyone probably by tomorrow night about what people can do.
There is really a three week window in which we all have to work together to get this done. We are up against pretty serious opposition, so we need to hang together and work as much as physically possible considering our illness.
THe first thing to do is for everybody to continue generating phone calls to Pallone , trying to get new people to call. The only message that you need to give is that you want Pallone to put HR 741 , the Lyme bill, on the calendar for a hearing. His phone number in DC is 202-225-4671
Be sure to tell him if you are a constituent, since that carries extra weight. Ellen

Ellen, I e-mailed you privately about bumper stickers, but if you go this route, set up a PayPal account so that those of us who are not local can help out monetarily - I will be the first in line with a donation, I think this is a great idea! -karen

just a suggestion- alot of people who are near the beach Pier Village are out of towners. You may hit more local people by being in the Long Branch downtown area (corner Broadway and Bath?) and that area, also west long branch downtown area.
I will contribute to bumper stickers too.

CS, I checked with the LymeRights committee which agreed that the bumper stickers were a great idea. But , unfortunately, it would be too hard to work out in time to have an effect. It would take a week by the time we could actually get it to leafletters, between printing mailing and getting them to people who would be leafletting. Then there was the issue that we don't want to collect money from people so there would have to be a system for people who wanted to contribute to actually pay the company directly then have to get it to the leafletters.
The thing is that we only have less than 3 weeks to do this Pallone campaign in, because if the bill is not put on the calendar by then, then it's all over.
So, as good as the idea is, it is not practical to handle in such a short time.
BUT don't worry. We are arranging for lawn signs to appear throughout Pallone's district. That will be quicker to put into place because one of the LymeRights committee membesr will put the signs on the website with instructions on how to make it into a lawn sign.
We went leafletting again today with an equally good reaction from the public. I'm exhausted, though, because the trip from Manhattan takes a while.
So we really need more people to volunteer to do the leafletting. Ideally we should be there every day for the next 2 1/2 weeks.
Njgirl, I appreciate what you're saying about the location. I think we need to get more volunteers so we can cover a number of areas. Part of why we go to Long Branch is that it has a mix of Pallone constituents and tourists. The value of getting tourists is that we would like to make Pallone nervous that we might start making problems for tourism in his district. (Plus it's wonderful to be out near the ocean).
Please keep this thread going. Please see if you can find volunteers to contact me about giving out leaflets. Also check the website, www.LymeRights.org which should give a lot of ideas and instructions by the end of the week.
AND PLEASE KEEP GETTING PEOPLE TO CALL PALLONE. THis is a national issue, so people from across the country should keep calling. Thanks, Ellen

ellen,
leaflets are excellent, but the BIG YARD SIGNS WILL REALLY MAKE AN IMPACT; you drive by these DAILY.
perhaps having leaflets there by signs in YOUR yard for those walking by would get the word out there too.
you'd have to make sure you keep an eye out on them and remove them nightly from where you store them during the day.
edited; new idea; FOR THOSE WHO MADE PROTEST SIGNS, COVER THEM WITH PLASTIC, AND PUT IN YOUR YARDS BY SIGN TO GET PALLONE OUT OF OFFICE! they were each so effective!!!
again, take them in overnight so they aren't stolen after all your hard work!
call the newspaper asking for COVERAGE of why you are doing this, and pallone's being bought off by medical community in lobbyist money!
can the support groups be notified, and the leaflets EMAILED to them where they could print off more and have available:
put up on bulletin boards: grocery, gas, bank, WORK, etc.
and outside by YARD SIGNS ?? thx for the update on your activism on behalf of ALL OF US!!!

It's amazing how effective giving out flyers can be because of the personal contact.. It's amazing to spend some time talking with people in the area. Everybody has a Lyme story, theirs or a friend's .Ellen
