I have been running hot again. Low grade fever of 99-99.8, average mostly hovers right around 99.2-99.4.
At work they joke that I am going through menopause. I am hotter than everybody else all the time. I remember being like this when "I had active Lyme". I have been off lyme meds for several months.
However, I am on bactrim ds for a resistant scalp infection. Twice diagnosed as staph and twice as sterile. Bactrim made it go away initially, only while I took it. Now I have persistant little sores and take benadryl every night for itching. TRhe only other meds are vancomycin and gentomycin-both iv and really harsh, .
I think bactrim can cause fever. hmmm.
In any case no doc has been able to do anything. I went to a infectious disease specialist who believed my scalp problems were due to my habit of scratching the itchy sores. He believes that the itchy sores happen after I scratch. DUH! If they didn't itch, I wouldn't be tempted to scratch holes in my head. My lyme doc has been of no help.
I like the dermatologist who referred me to the infectious disease quack. But he doesn't know what to do. I will run out of bactrim prescriptions in about a month and will have to do something. The pustules will come back with a vengeance....I know it has been going on for almost 3 years. No wonder it is antibiotic resistant.
I keep telling the nice derm doc that I am going to shave my head so we can use topical meds on it.
oh well. write to me.

I used to be a frequent contributor to this board when I "was" sick. Now that I am "healthy", I only come intimes of complete frustration.

Try rubbing alcohol after a shower but be very careful not to get in eyes then apply bagbalm used for animals originaly.

Ive been breaking out to I believe its a attack by bacteria after stoping abx's used in lyme treatment, 3 months for me now off. It takes time for immune system to get back on track.

Bag balm on my entire head?
I do the alcohol thing every couple of showers.
I use a antimicrobial shampoo. Same ingredients as hibiclens surgical scrub.
still get the stuff.
crap.

Any chance you have bartonella? I have had a nasty itchy rash that is finally going away with ABX treatment. Dr. J in conn. said bartonella.

it may be possible that you have a fungal scalp infection and need antifungals, not antibiotics.

this is called Tinea capitis.

i know NOTHING about it but you can read more at the following link :
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000878.htm

check it out with the dermatologist.

also a medicated shampoo, such as one containing selenium sulfide, may reduce the spread of infection.

sulfide is a big part of the chemical makeup of bactrim so maybe that is why you had a good intial reaction to it?

best of luck and glad to hear your slymefree!

You mentioned bartonella?
This rash starts our as a sore scalp, almost bruised feeling. Progresses to tiny pustules and itching. Actually itching occurs anywhere after the initial soreness. The worst it ever got was like shooting pains on my scalp and itching that kept me from sleep. I couldn't brush my hair for weeks.

Ever since I started lyme treatment several years ago, I have had access to flucanazole 100mg, daily if I so need. Can't say that I have noticed a difference with that med.

I jsut picked up a 30 day supply of bactrim, and have one more month of refills after that. So, I have enough meds to suppress the infection somewhat,,,,until I feel like wrestling with another medical condition.
I will look up yeast and bart' infections and their effect on skin.

I should go back to the doc, but which one.
Itching is really bad, had to take anti itch meds at work then drink coffee to counter the tiredness.
Better today, didn't take itch medicine till after work. Didn't take itch away completely.
My husband's standard suggestion is
"Maybe you need to take a shower"
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Maybe I should just stop the bactrim and let the mystery infection go nuts. Oh thats right, i'll go nuts too.
well im going nuts anyways.
going to take a shot at sleeping
don't really care if i do sleep
i have to go get my wisdom teeth yanked tomorrow/later today.
so all i plan on doing is sleeping
if i don't take my provigil and have no caffeine, i am practically in a continuous state of slumber.
here i am rambling.....
must stop, but let me scratch first....
scrithc...scritch....ahhhhh that is good.....
