That being said; this weekend, I am going to a brewfest with my Dad - we had the trip planned before I was diagonosed. I am currently taking Doxy and have been for nearly 2 weeks now. Personally, after drinking a couple of beers, I am VERY shakey, nervious, and have palipation-type symptoms the day after. Since I will be drinking beer this weekend, do any of you have suggestions on how to combat the Lyme symptoms that go along with drinking alcohol? My plan (so far) is:
1. Drink LOTS of water.
2. Drink far less beer that I would usually.
3. Take acidophilious (but how much, how often?)
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
You'd better take tons of acidophilus....but I don't know if that will help any at all. I would take 2 capsules three times a day.
lots of water is good......but why the beer if it makes you sick?

Not a problem... I hope you start feeling better soon!
Research alcohol in depth...what it does to the body...brain cells, etc.
Keep in mind Bb follows the cholesterol pathway...lipids.
Then figure out WHY/HOW alcohol impacts this pathogen.
I haven't had a brewski since I got sick, and man do I miss the suds!

SO I began to drink beer with my friends.
It turns out that I had some alcoholic friends who would pass me a beer every day.
Within a year of drinking alcohol 3 times a week I had a MAJOR relaplse.
I spent the next year in bed most of the time, crying all the time severelly depressed and weak.
I thought I needed a psych.
Then it dawned upon me that my CFIDS and fibro might be related to my alcohol then developed alcohol intollerence and mental illness.
Turns out I was right. It was definitlley contributing to my condition.
I havent had a drop of alcohol in close to a year. I have a severe intollerence now.
The last time I had a beer, the next day I wanted to kill myself literally. I was crying the whole day.
Try explaining that one DOC!!!!!
People who are just depressed are able to go out and get drunk. I cant even do that :;
If you aren't taking milk thistle already to help your liver function better, it would be good to start before your adventure.
It could be a question to ask your druggist or perhaps the doctor's office.
I have been on tetra for several years. My llmd says at this point if I skip abx an occational Saturday it is ok. This is probably not the best thing 2 weeks into treatment.

I have to admit I went to a wine tasting recently and caved after watching my husband and dad sampling. Actually my mom and I both caved as she is infected too.
For me I do not think the couple of times I have cheated in the past few months has made any difference... How long have many of us been fighting this? and being good? Please do not think I am saying drinking is good for you...
Then there are those I know like my very good friend infected 5 years w/lyme treated short term 4x... felt terrible since the first bulls eye... you know the routine...
Then found lyme doc, did 7 months of meds, still symptom free after 1 1/2 years and feels great. Yelp, he drank beer only on the weekends. I thought he was careless at at the time.
Well here he is still feeling wonderful and here I here I am still sick. As with this disease in general... Everyone is different...
I think only you know the answer to your question... if you think you are ok with drinking beer or what ever your choice on occasion then thats your decision.
I had an interesting conversation with my new doc recently and alcohol came up plus all the bad stuff. He said to me another doc recently said to him "If you can't go to a ball game and enjoy a beer and a hot dog, Whats the point" and I have to say - I totally agree. Everything in moderation.
We are all human, some love ice cream... We all cheat so just try to do your best. Hey if it makes you sick dont do it but if you can handle an occasional beverage...

When I went on tetra I stopped drinking completely for many months. Recently I had a some wine and scotch while on vacation. I did not feel any worse. My LLMD says drinking in moderation is fine.
My advice to you is: don't drink too much, eat first (not sugar or other bad stuff), there must be plenty of sausages at a brewfest. Get well hydrated before you head to the brewfest. Wear a hat and stay out of the sun.
Cheers!

so be aware your body may not permit you to have much.
Warning make sure to drink a couple of large glass's of water or your hangover will be extreme.
If you dont have to drink dont though.
For clarification, did I ever say I was going out to get "ripped?" No. My question was not "can I go out and get really drunk", but rather, "since I am going to be drinking (lightly at that), what can I do to help myself out." Of course, the right thing to do is to not drink at all. Can I restrain myself and not drink this weekend...sure. But the question is, can I drink (in moderation) this weekend and take the necessary precautions and be ok with it? From all the responses so far, I see that answers to this are like answers to anything else pertaining to Lyme:
- It varies from person to person.
- Some people are 100% against (or for) it.
To the people calling me "stupid"... Do you stick to your diet 100% of the time (no sugar, no carbs, etc)? Do you exercise every day? Do you do everything that you are supposed to do all of the time? Has it helped? If so, great! If not, I wish you the very best in your recovery.
Next week, I will probably go on IV, so I see this as the last time that I'll be able to do something that I love for a very long time. I'm not going to go and get ripped, but rather pace and enjoy myself as much as I can. If I injest 2 beer total, will I pay for it the next day? Maybe. Is there something that could help me advert the effects? That was my original question.
Sorry about the ramble.

3. Take acidophilious (but how much, how often?) 2 or 3 capsuls every 2 hrs worked for me and I took extra bcomplex vitamins and before I went to bed I took magnesium another complexb, and 2 more acidophilis.
Warning make sure to drink a couple of large glass's of water
same if one eats minerals,mineral-containg food with the tetracycline class of abx, or other medicines that say don't eat/drink this that, and the other food item/beverage with a given medicine.

Anyhow, it seems like several people here are very anti alcohol in any context. It is a different mentality than those of us who do enjoy fine wine, a good home brew and fine food. It must be more controversial than I ever thought it would be. A sign of the times in our ever divided country and world?
I think you will do fine to sip and taste and eat while sipping and tasting throughout the day/night. The eating and taking tons of acidoph will help. I would just take a whole bottle and keep swallowing handfuls when you drink water.
I do realise this is ANYTHING but a kegger and you are not going to get ripped. Enjoy yourself and drink lots of water, eat non-yeast/sugar things and take probioitcs.
Let us know how it went please.
Have a taste for those of us who cant.
SALUD!

second and this is just MY EXPERIENCE (everyone is different) I occasionally have 1 beer OR 1 glass of wine. I do not have a problem with it. If I have 2 then I feel nasty.
I do take milk thistle.
I think your plan of sipping in moderation is a good one and you SHOULD enjoy yourself. If you feel worse then you know not to do it again.
I agree we are so restricted in everything we do its very difficult at times.
Have a great time with your family.

I must say I was disappointed in your post. When I read the title I got excited and thought maybe I could drink beer and get well. Of course that dream was too good to be true.

I do appreciate all of your comments!!
Actually, my wife is Russian and Pivo = Beer in Russian too. :-)
I say go if you are not feeling too bad. You can always leave and if you are anything like myself then the way I feel changes like the weather...one minute I feel good then next I am on the ground.
I find the only thing that helps me to keep my sanity is to keep on living life as best I can. I of course couldn't do this for the first four months of treating lyme and two coinfections but now I try to get out because it gets my mind off of things if only for a few minutes.
Can't you treat the beer tasting like a wine tasting and just spit up the beer after you swish it
I hope you are able to go and have fun!!!!
Pivo,
I apologize if I came on too strong.
Have a good time

Just my opinion,
Trails
Ive done many things when I thought I just couldnt get up off the bed. As long as it was something I was passionate about and had people around to keep my adrenals boosted enough to get me thru the day Id make it.
The problem is your going to feel even worse if you stay home.
I get out so seldom that I try and push myself to the max when its something fun.
Go have fun and be sick tomorrow. That my medical advice from a former beer drinker.
My hubby is on doxy and he does occassionally have a beer or two. I don't personally see the harm. Its not like you are gonna go out and get sloshed now are you? And you know what, I personally (and this is just my opinion-im no medical expert) think that skipping a dose of your doxy to have a few beers would be ok. My lyme md says it's ok every once in a while as long as you don't make a bad habit out of it.
I hope you go anyway and have some fun!! I had a few margaritas a couples weeks ago and man was it good to just kick back and unwind a bit!!! Nope, didn't have any major flare ups either. All the best to you!!
