Just got my 18 mos old results back positive from MDL - Lyme Urine PCR!!!

This makes 3, my 3 year old, me and now her!!

I breastfed her for about a year before I knew I had Lyme. She also had a mosquito bite in July that looked like a bulls-eye.

I know if you are positive on the WB, which tests for antibodies then it means you've been exposed to Lyme and a clinical diagnosis can confirm it.

The PCR looks for Bb DNA (antigen vs antibodies), so if it is positive does it mean you have the disease or just that you've been exposed?

I'm so bummed out!

Already have a call into Dr. J.

Up, didn't ask my question the first time.

Antibody test like western blot and elisa show that you have been exposed.

PCR means they have found the antigen itself, so you have the disease.

It is like seeing the footprint of the abominable snowman (antibody) vs. seeing the snowman himself (antigen). If you see the footprint only, then it might be old, with the critter long gone. If you see the critter, he is definitely there!

Thanks lou,

Just talked to Dr. J's office and they said the same thing as you, she has the disease. I guess intellectly I knew that, but emotionally I was hoping it wasn't definitive. aaaggghhhh!

Loved the analogy!

DJP,
So sorry you've got another positive in the family.

I know it's bad news, but look at the positive side -
If she has Lyme, what a blessing that you knew to check it out & who to call.

There's no way to know how many children never get a diagnosis at all. That's the worst part.

Isn't Dr J & his staff wonderful?
They are another blessing in your life.
Did they recommend what her treatment should be?

With your knowledge of Lyme & advice from the very best....
the prognosis should be good.

Hi cbb,

Thanks for reminding me to see the positive because there are many positives.

Dr. J's office just called with a couple of questions and they will get back to me as far as the next step.

They may want to do a Western Blot because it will tell them more information.

Yes, they are a blessing to us!

Can't even imagine how difficult it has to be on you.
I hope that all 3 of you get along well on your treatment.

Keep in touch & let us know.

cbb,

Dr. J's office called back today and my husband talked to them and they recommended 3 mos of antibiotics and said no need to do Western Blot.

We are blessed because it really hasn't been as bad as it could be. We were lucky my daughter had the bulls-eye, that we found this site and were directed to Dr. J and, that we tested positive and we are all getting treatment (espcially considering the area we live in).

I was able to avoid alot of the pitfalls because of the people on this site that had been there.

I know many others on this site are much sicker and are having a harder time getting treatment and dealing with insurance companies.

DJP,

Do you mind if I ask what abx Dr. J put your 18 month old on? I have a good MD that isn't an LLMD (YET), but he is learning and is willing to do whatever he needs to to get our family better. Thanks!

Shelly :-)

Shelly,

I just picked up the prescription from the pharmacy and this is what I got:

Amoxicillin 200/5ml
1/2 teaspoon twice a day

However, my husband got the call from Dr. J's office and he didn't know exactly what they were calling in.

I've learned in the past (because my 3 year old is being treated for Lyme and the pharmacy has made mistakes) to double check the prescription with what the Dr. said they called in.

So, I still need to call Dr. J's office and confirm that what I got is what they called in.

I'll try to call in the next day or two and I'll let you know if it is different. Email me if you don't hear from me in a couple of days.

Is your LLMD working with Dr. J? I know he consults with other doctors.

srkwolf,

I talked to Dr. J's office and that is what they called in.

It seems like a really small dose so I'm going to call back tomorrow and find out why.

My other daughter was at a much higher dose when she was on amoxy.

Will let you know what I find out.
