For many months, before I had positive results from Igenex (after many negatives from Quest), many of the medical professionals I saw in my quest to get a diagnosis said to me "How could you have Lyme, you live in an apartment in NYC?"
What is the matter with medical professionals that in this age of worldwide travel, indeed when the whole world is waiting for that first avian flu victim to get on a plane and bring the infection somewhere unexpected, that they think that you can't possibly have Lyme if you don't live in an area that is known for it.
Until I got sick I traveled all over the country and the world, and as I was very active, was in fields and woods and could have been bitten by a tick anywhere. But because I live in Manhattan, I couldn't possibly have contracted a tick borne illness!
I just saw another reference to this urban rural distinction in a post this morning and it makes me crazy, it flies against the whole 21st century travel industry's raison d'etre. Don't doctors ever travel?

Your post made me laugh. It is so typical of the stupid things you will hear come out of the mouths of ducks.
I thought there were enough ducks on the golf courses, but apparently not enough are communing with nature.

Neither do doctors think about what your home or work life is like. It took a long time for a doctor to suggest that my sysmptoms could have anything to do with the mold growing in my home. As a physical therapist, I saw many people whose doctors had no idea their back pain was caused by a particular chair, or a specific activity they did.
It's like we exist in a little vaccumm when they see us! A good history should bring some of this out, but they have to think of it first. Posted by Ann-OH (Member # 2020) on :
There is an article somewhere that there were lyme disease carrying black-legged ticks found in Central Park. Ticks are carried by migrating birds and dropped off everywhere. NYC is on one of the biggest bird fly-ways in the country.
That doc needs to be more aware for his own sake as well as yours! Ann - OH
