Just wanted to know if Rifampin is used for Lyme or is it for other coinfections? Sorry No time to research.

It's used for bartonella, in conjunction with zithromax (usually). Has excellent brain penetration. Has no effect on Bb or other coinfections that I know of.

It has an effect on other drugs, so be sure to read up on it.

I was told by my LLMD it also hit lyme.

During my entire treatment, I was only on Rifampin and low dose Flagyl. (and have been abx free for 14 months now).

Julie, that's amazing (and great!)

Rifampin is an impressive abx -- I had very few side effects from it (it makes me very tired) and it's done a great job against the bart. I realize it's very toxic to the liver, but I've done lots of liver protection and my bloodwork has been fine. I wonder why it's not used more?

Anyway, if I knew then what I know now....I'd have done the rifampin right away--getting rid of bart has been a huge part of my healing (although I'm not all the way there yet) and the bart tx was one of the quickest and most immediately effective tx I've done (I did try another bart tx first -- can't remember what, but it included Septra to which, I find, I'm very allergic.). The hubby had to do quinolones for bart because he couldn't take rifampin and mepron together and he's still battling babs-- the quinolones were much harder on him than the rifampin was on me, and not as effective, I think.

As a disclaimer, it seems that I'd gotten rid of babs before the bart tx -- dunno if that's why the bart tx is going so well. Still dealing with Bb but that's going well too. Maybe some of what I thought was bart die off was Bb die off?
