I have taken certain abx within the past few years for urinary tract infections and strep. Why didn't I herx taking those but I did taking Biaxin and Omnicef? Just curious....can you take some abx without herxing because the abx are that targeted to the lyme or coinfection bugs?

Hi,

There could be lots of reasons. Many of the abx that are used for strep and ut infections are also used for TBDs.

Maybe the dose wasn't high enough. Maybe the bugs were in hiding. Maybe the course of abx was too short.

Some people with TBDs feel better after a short course of abx. I did when I was first infected with HME.

Also, abx act in different ways.

Both Biaxin and Omnicef are bacteriocidal which means it kills live bacteria. SMZ-TMP aka Bactrim/Septra (one of the UTI drugs that are used) is bacteriostatic which only kills when the bacteria is reproducing. Maybe while you were on it, the bacteria was not reproducing. It could be that if you took it longer, your would herx.

That's just a few things off the top of my head.

There are also different strains of bacteria out there that may have more or less response depending on the abx you use.

Hope this helps,

Corgilla
