I have 6 unread private messages which I sent in response to inquiries. Two dating back to Dec. 15th.
Anyone else have a problem with people not reading private messages? or maybe they are not getting them?????

I changed my profile because it was way too time consuming to read these private messages and having to go on Lymenet to do so.
I do not get any private messages any more via Lymenet, but I am no not allowed to send a private message to anyone. So unless I get the private e-mail of someone, there is no way to make contact any longer. In my opinion, this private messaging is a dumb arrangement, or maybe I do not understand it fully.
Any comments welcome. I would certainly like to be able to e-mail someone or for people to be able to e-mail me privately if they wish. I do not want my e-mail messaging going via Lymenet. In the previous setup of old Lymenet, people could find my e-mail address with my posts. Or I could find others e-mail addresses if they were open to receive one. That was easy - now it is complicated and I just do not have the time to spend. There is enough to do without making life more complicated.

Right, you get the body of the private message in the email notification. Then I click on the link, at the bottom of the email, which takes me to the message in my profile collection.
I stay logged into LymeNet, without ever logging out. So it is no problem at all to read the messages.
When I want to reply, I pull up a second window, hit "my profile," then the message. Now I have two copies of the message, and hit the reply button on one of them.
This way I can refer back and forth between the two windows, so I can follow the info in the message that was sent to me, and form a coherant response in the second window.
To pull up a second window, do a 'shift click.' That is, depress the 'shift' key on the lower left keyboard. Then left click the mouse on the link you want to open. This open the link in a new window.
Hmm, clear?

So, I can actually read the message as soon as it is sent to me. But since I don't go to the Lymenet page to read it, I'm sure the other person sees it as "unread by recipient." When in fact, I HAVE read it because it appears right in my own email inbox!
I don't know if all email programs work this way.
My failing is that I am often slow to answer. To the two people I owe PMs to, I am truly sorry, I have not forgotten, I am just managing a lot right now at the same time as making some treatment decisions/trials. (you know, having Lyme....).
Maybe many email programs work that way, and the person HAS read it, just not through the Lymenet page -- but they haven't been able to answer yet.
I actually LOVE this system. I hope the moderators keep it on the site.

Right.
I usually click on the link below the message so I can "read" it on Lymenet too. That way I don't have that silly "you have a message" thing blinking at me the whole time I'm on Lymenet!

I have been having problems with recieving PM's, and wanting to reply to the person or just say Thank You... and i get an error message that their box is full.
(How full could it really be? Is there a 1024 byte linit?)
I think the PM's as they are implemented are a dumb idea and need to go.

If I get an e-mail, I want to read it and answer. I don't want to have to go to Lymenet and push a hundredandfifty buttons. Besides that, I would like to keep my e-mail as private as possible.
I eliminated that function from my profile for that reason.
I would have liked to e-mail Lymetoo to find out about her Mom, but I can't e-mail her because I changed my profile to PM's while I will readily respond to an e-mail a person sends me direct.
My e-mail is [email protected]. Lymetoo, if you read this, I have your address down below a mile, just want you to know I have been thinking about you and your Mom.

Hi All
Yep i have several PM that are marked also--not read--
Its kind of hard to miss the flashing red flag --for 3 months--
So I think a combo of things are going on --
When the mail box fills up- you dont get any more messages- eather place--
Some how my 2 months ago my user preferances got messed up- so I set them to stock-- and had No PM capibality-
I am useing Mozilla Firefox and there is a setting in the user preferences some where-- I reset it and it works smooth now--
There is a last posibilty also--
The little red flag has been blinking so Long they dont notice it any more--Jay--

The PM "box" only holds 60 messages. I have trouble keeping my "limit" down sometimes because I save PM's that contain vital info I may need later.
GIGI....Thank you so much for thinking of me. I really appreciate it. I'm doing OK thus far.
The PM's are very private and this way you don't have to give out your email. That helps keep down spam from this site that I used to get. [People would get the email addresses, then do mass send-outs of spam.]

Sometimes I get really helpful or excellent private messages and want to respond with something thoughtful. But then, being Lyme-brained, it just seems to wander off my radar.
More to add to all the other good intentions in my life these days.

If someone sends me a PM asking questions and advise from me I respond. It bothers me that some are not being read when I took the time to answer their questions.
People shouldn't send a PM of questions if they are not going to follow up. I feel like I've wasted my time with the 3 unread that I have.

I don't know if Lou or Toby reads this or not, but reading ALL the above I thought of this. So I wlll copy/paste this and send them a joint PM.
When I worked for the state, when we sent an email, we could show .ACK at the very end of the email. Then when the person opened up this mail, an ACKNOWLEDGEMENT would come back to the originator of the note.
Could this be done with PMS?
Also, I love the PM as is, but offer this to you who have FULL PM boxes.
When you read the PM in your private email, just click on the direct link to the post they sent you, and DELETE it from there so it doesn't fill up your maximum of 60 PMs. or REPLY to it from there, as it will show UNREAD otherwise to the originator.
Tutu, a thought for you: copy/paste those posts you want to KEEP to your word processing with their nickname. Then delete it from your PMs. After all, EVERYONE wants to talk privately to our famous Tutu who pulls down her pants at the drop of a hat....show & tell time.

I adore the PM function.....I find it easy and I don't have to be subject to the trolls invading my e-mail box.
I've sent PM's out that have been read and not responded to.....most are responded to. My point is that I know when it has been read and I believe it even says when.
I think this is one of the best functions on Lymenet. This is after spending years playing catch with others e-mail addresses. It was difficult previously to have a private conversation without giving your address to those trolls.

Actually, I dont'd have any problem with the way the PM works, except for the problem of not being able to reply to people because of their mail box being full. That one is really annoying.
Really, there is no reason anyone needs to store alot of these messages on Lymenet's server, because when you get one a copy is emailed to you. Why not just keep a copy on your own email client like before, and erase the PM from the Lymenet server in a reasonable amount of time?
The big problem is full mailboxes. If that one could be solved somehow this would be just fine. The added privacy is a good thing if the inability to send people messages could somehow be worked out.
