If you are uninsured, underinsured, or are having problems with your current health insurance coverage, here's some information from the American Diabetes Association to help you navigate the health insurance system.
Is job-based coverage available to you? Health insurance available through an employer generally offers the best protections. These plans can never turn you down because of a preexisting condition like diabetes.
Is there a high-risk pool in your state? While monthly premiums can be costly, high-risk health insurance pools offer coverage to individuals who do not have health insurance through an employer and who would otherwise be considered ``uninsurable" for an individual health insurance policy because they have a chronic illness {such as diabetes).
More than 30 states have high-risk health insurance pools. Contact your state department of insurance or go to diabetes.org/statehealthinsurance to find out if your state operates a high-risk pool.
Does your health insurance cover necessary diabetes ..medications, supplies, and services such as diabetes education ..and medical nutrition therapy? What are your prescription ..co-payments and deductibles?
To find out, speak to your health plan or your employee benefits department at work. It is a good idea to ask these questions as early as possible so you can plan ..ahead for any health care issues that might arise.
Think about the future. If you leave a current job that offers health insurance, where will you obtain health insurance coverage until a new job begins? Are health insurance options like COBRA ..available to you and your family?
Having trouble getting medical services paid for? If you have a claim that has been denied, you can file an appeal. Speak to your health plan for info on appeals procedures in your state.
Consider health clinics. If you can't afford to pay for doctor's visits, there may be free or low-cost clinics in your neighborhood that offer services such as: check-ups, blood glucose checks, medications, and diabetes education. Visit http://ask.hrsa.gov/pc/ to find clinics near you.
Can't afford your diabetes medications? Many pharmaceutical companies offer prescription assistance programs to help people who are uninsured and unable to afford their medications.
Contact the maker of your medications to find out if you qualify. You can find contact information for the-makers of many of your medications on ADA's Web site at diabetes.org/ Prescriptionassistance.
Contact the American Diabetes Association at 1-800-342-2383 for more information. If you are looking for information on health insurance options that may be available to you, go to diabetes.org/healthinsurance.

Thank you for posting this Betty!
We are very fortunate that our insurance covers most of my daughters diabetes supplies and we have a relatively low co-pay, but it's nice to know there is help out there for those who need it!
