I did a search and found only a few references to urinary incontinence. None that I found mentioned this in concert with pain AFTER urination that lasts for quite a while (can be several hours).
It doesn't seem to be UTI. I was tested 3 different times -- once it was a culture and there were low-level bad bugs, but not enough to be treated. The next time it was just a quicky urine check. Had high white cells and was treated for UTI. Had this pain again, and normal quicky urine check. Also, pain only starts immediately after urination and can last a few hours. These tests were over several months.
At the same time, I've been having increasingly worse incontinence problems. I've not mentioned them to the doc assuming it was just more neurological crap from the Lyme (I have quite a bit). But, its been getting quite a bit worse lately so I mentioned it today. He wants me to get it worked up to see if it is indeed neurological or something else. Ugh.
Anyway, anyone else have this particular combination of problems? Was it in fact from the Lyme? I'm hoping that abx will fix this but also want to follow the adage that not everything is from the Bb infection.

Did they do a sensitivity test? No UTI infection testing is complete without the sensitivity part that indicates, as I am sure you know, what that particular bacteria is susepctible too. ( spelling)
GIven that, my daughter was born with vesticoureteral reflux, persistent cloaca, neurognenic bladder, chronic UTI's, chronic pyleonephritis, etc. ( and add in the numerous surgeries)
I consider myself, after years of her UTI's to be the mother of a seven year old UTI specialist. It can hurt for hours after you pee.
Interestingly enough, her UTI's haven't been the only thing that has caused that problem, candida has as well.
You need the sensitivity part of the testing done. what did they find? What type of infection?
You can also ( if you can find it) get the herb LOVAGE. It does WONDERS and so does cranberry juice as Im sure you are aware.

Hi. My daughter just began AP in January. We have been trying to observe even the slightest improvement. What we have notices so far: dry eyes are improving, using less eye drops, and irritable bladder. She used to sit for 45 minutes waiting to go, other times she'd wake up in a wet bed. She complained of pelvic pain, but she never showed evidence of a UTI. That pain is gone, urinary dysfunction and incontence has stopped, as well.
That's what we've noticed so far. Hope this works for you.

I have bladder problems. Lyme or whatever has settled into that area.
As others said it could be yeast as well.
Ive had the cultures done and no bacteria was able to be grown.
What kind of pain do you have after urination?
it is good that you are getting a full workup.
I am in the process of doing the same thing.
what has helped me with the burning...is to squirt the area with water to wash away the acidic urine. Also take some of those vitamin E softgels, split it open and rub it on the area.
My urologist suggested both to me and they helped with the burning.
Can you tell if it is your bladder itself burning?

I don't have burning. The pain is a severe cramp-like pain precisely in the area of my bladder. It starts a couple of minutes after urinating, crescendos to a stunning level of pain, and hangs out there for a few hours and then gradually remits. Of course, by then, I have to urinate again. Sometimes the pain refers additionally to the low back. I tend to use some sort of heat on it which doesn't help much, but just distracts. When it is horrific and I can't tolerate it anymore or want to sleep, I take a small bit of percocet.
The incontinence has progressed quite a bit recently as well. I'm assuming, but do not know for sure, that this symptom and pubic-bone region pain which I am calling bladder pain are related.
CoL -- I only had that UTI culture once and it showed Strep D bugs, but because it was at some level just a smidge below typical treatment level, they did not do a sensitivity test. The time I had the white cells, neither a culture nor a sensitivity test were done and I was just treated empirically. I have been taking cranberry capsules (one of my doc's is one of the people who discovered cranberry's effect on UTIs, so it is manditory in that office!) but with no effect other than to stir up my many food allergies which are flaring up again.
Also, one time when the pain etc was severe, the gyno checked a smear for yeast and there was none. I also just had a Great Smokies stool test done and no yeast there either. I am going to have a Great Smokies test for vaginosis now that I am symptomatic again -- last check for the yeastie beasties.

I had read somewhere that cranberry can be aggravating to the bladder. Can't remember where I read it, I read so many of the herbal newsletters. When I read it that I thought that was strange since I always thought it was supposed to help the bladder.
Maybe someone else here heard/read that too.

Yes cranberry can agrivate the bladder because cranberries are very acidic. I cant tolerate cranberries at all.
duramater- some of your symptoms might be Interstitial cystitis check out this site. www.ic-network.com. Im not saying this is what you have but i do know it involves pain after urinating and back pain. it presents differently in everyone.
Do you notice if the cranberry capsules are aggrivating your bladder more?
have you tried over the counter AZO? It really helps calm down my bladder. Or your Dr can prescribe pyridium which will help too. Turns you urine orange.
Im not a dr just recommending somethings that helped me some.

Interstitial cystitis came to my mind too. I have had it and the pain is unbelievable. I had it for years and didn't know what it was, but there was no infection. I did have bleeding a couple of times.
What made it go away? Elavil, didn't know that till years after it was gone. I was given low dose Elavil for sleep, which worked great and the bladder pain stopped, thought it was just cause I was sleeping better. Years later I was reading about IC and they recommended Elavil to treat. Elavil works pretty good so it turns out on blocking nerve pain. I can't tell you how much Elavil has helped me.

Yes, cranberry can make IC worse, much worse. I would definitely stop the cranberry capsules just to see what will happen. At the same time, I would cut out all other acidic foods and drinks, caffeine, etc....just in case it might help. [can't hurt, but I'm NOT a dr!!]
The pain an misery of IC is what made me retire on disability, only to find out many years later that Lyme disease was the main culprit.

I have stopped cranberry caps quite a while ago. And my symptoms, thus far, have not prompted an "IC" type response from any medial folks. We'll see what the follow up yields.
Yesterday, had round 1 of testing. Another urine culture, all girl-parts cultured (will check for yeast, bac (good & bad), etc), and a pap. See the specialist in about 2 weeks I think.
Why would I randomly try cipro?

i've had 24/7 urine incontinence since my hip surgery 5.5 months ago! saw a uro-gyno in des moines last month who gave me a thorough exam. she thought it was UTI, but NOPE!
then 2 wks. ago they canceled urodynamics due to family funeral. i go next monday for this catheter up my butt; then i was scheduled to get my original results in afternoon ... so anxious to find out what can be done! hate this, and $30 - $35/week is expensive !!
then next day go for almost 6 month hip checkup.
got my bill for uro-gyno exam/consultation today $385; thank you god; medicare paid it all of what they reimburse for.

had IC from what I believe is Bart-
went away cipro and then came back and they wouldn't give me cirpo because I am nursing went away with Monurol!!!
all sucked sucked SUCKED!!! hate bladder stuff yup that after urination burn agony ooooow!!!!!

Betty- to answer your question, a sensitivity test will show what abx the bacteria is suseptable too , so in theory it can be iradicated.

had my urodynamics done monday am; pm was to get results but doc ended up in surgery longer so still have NO results of this ordeal.
she's to call me sometime this week for results given that way to me!
i wrote this down and will mention this to her whenever i hear from her.

Hi betty- The sensitivity testing would work for you. You dont need to be on abx for it to work.
If the lab finds bacteria and your dr ordered the sensitivity portion of the urinalysis, the lab will report which abx you should be on.
If bacteria wasnt found, then they wont report anything.

I have a funny feeling in my bladder/urethra before I urinate.
They have found protein in my urine (which my famly doc tried to blame on sperm in the absence of a partner), a few stray bacteria or white cells here or there, but nothing serious enough for them to treat.
Today I notice when my bladder is full, I have to consciously squeeze until I can get to the bathroom. This happens fairly frequently.
When I was younger I used to get severe UTIs where I would pee straight blood. I am especially concerned because I lived in the Pottstown, PA area, and there appears to be a bladder cancer cluster there.

What I see that Duramater was describing was cramping post-void not burning and cramping AFTER you pee would be a bladder spasm. It can be excruciating pain. It can be caused by many things, but mostly from some sort of iritation to the bladder which is a muscle.
lyme, infection, ic, prostatitis for men, nueropathy, etc.
in my case my ureteral stent was too long and "tickled" my bladder.
Stoner butt pills (Balladona and opium suppositories) worked like magic but put me into urinary retention.
many of us have cramping issues in other muscles...would seem not so far off base to have cramps of the bladder too.
