I've taken Omnicef before at 600 mg a day. Now I am hearing about it prescribed at 1200 mg a day. Is this new, or is this the more common dose?

I think that it's the same as with all the different abx....Different Dr's Rx different doses.

Generally it is given at 300 mg bid, but some Dr's do have their patients take 600 mg bid. Same with Ceftin. Some Dr's only give 500 mg bid, but more often it is given at 1000 mg bid....Even 1500 bid. Biaxin is usually given at 500 mg bid, but some Dr's give 1000 mg bid. It all depends on who you talk to. Is more always better? Maybe not. If you figure it all out, let me know will ya? [Smile]

I'm currently on 300mg omnicef twice daily, along with minocycline and tinidazole. I think that's a pretty common omnicef dose for lyme from an LLMD. It's doing a good job keeping my lyme in check for now. In my opinion, I think you should be more concerned about getting a combination of abx in order to be fighting the multiple forms of Bb both inside and outside your cells, rather than take just one type antibiotic at a higher dose. Since what strain(s) you have can determine which antibiotics work, some experimentation is common till you find what works best for you. The combo approach has been far more effective for me than any single drug alone.

I just went off of Omnicef and had been on it at 300 mg. b.i.d. for quite some time.

Virginia, I agree with you. I think that combining abx with different properties is the smartest route, at least most of the time.

Thanks everybody, for checking in. I was particularly concerned about one friend, who is seeing a newer Lyme doc. He got the high dose recommendation, and has a very bad gut. I'm worried that this high dose would do him in.

I know that some of the knowledegable docs do use the higher dose, at least in some cases. But I think it is important to find a treatment that can be tolerated for the long haul. Omnicef seems to be one of the better tolerated drugs, but I don't know if that is true at really high doses.

Dr. B uses 1200 mg per day according to my recent conference notes

Thanks, Scott! I was trying to find what Dr. B said, but he doesn't list Omnicef in any of his previous recommendations.

I wonder if this will make Omnicef harder to tolerate. Hmmm, well, I'll just let people know what I found out.
