I have had a port for more than 2 years now and I've been very lucky to have had no problems with it. The surgery to have it put in is pretty easy to handle - I only had a little discomfort/pain for a few days afterwards.

Here are some previous posts/websites with info about ports:

Port-a-Cath (Catheter)
Questions about ports
Management of Implantable Ports
Info about CVADs (Central Venous Access Devices) (pdf file)

I hope those help you. Let me know if you have any questions about ports!

Peace and healing,
Annie

Only advice I'd give - is not to rush the infusion. If it takes an hour everyday for one gram do not try to do one gram in 45 minutes.

The first infusion will probably be done after they X-Ray for proper placement. However long it takes them to infuse you, should be how long it takes at home.

Rushing infusions can cause the chills, and other side effects. I wound up having mine pulled early, in hindsight because of a rushed infusion on my part.
