My adult son's PICC line was inserted last week. Is it normal to have a small amount of bleeding around the site?

I had a small amount of bloody drainage for the first couple of weeks. Normal. Also, with the transparent dressing over the site, it appears like there is more blood than is actually present.

Hope this helps. Moreso, I hope the treatment helps your son.

I would call your doctor or home health nurse about the bleeding. I had none that I was aware of.

PS...Pocono! Hey how are you old IV buddy?? [hi]

When I had my PICC line I had some bleeding around the site, one day there was even enough bleeding to make its way down my arm and out the bottom of the dressing. My nurse came that day and put a pressure dressing (gauze) under the clear dressing and left it there for a week. That helped a ton and my skin was able to heal a bit more and made a scab around the PICC entry hole.

Before the pressure dressing, my skin was healing a bit and making a scab between dressing changes but each week the nurse (often not my "usual" nurse) would wipe away the scab and it would bleed again. But after the pressure dressing and a few weeks of the nurses being careful to leave the scab there, it was fine and never bled (noticibly at least) again.

I hope that helps! If it's just a little bleeding I wouldn't worry too much but definitely do talk to your nurse about it.

Peace and healing,
Annie

Have to agree with Annie also. If the scab, or beginning of one was removed with the dressing change, yep, a bit more bleeding again.

Actually, I had my first dressing change before I left the hospital. It was a bonus. [Big Grin] Blood all over. Had to leave with a gown on (so stylish)and my shirt in a plastic bag.

A little blood is nothing to worry about, but always have the nurse check when in doubt. Mine stopped oozing after about two weeks.

PS Hey Timaca my ole' Rocephin Buddy. Ya' know how to cheer me up don't ya'. [hi]

I had a little bleeding as well and it was fine. I was told that bleeding over the size of a quarter and I should call for a dressing change. Hope this helps.
