Hi everyone,

Was wondering if anyone else is on Amantadine for fatigue. I just started it and it seems to be making a huge difference with my energy level. Any thoughts?

I tried it but went into a serious depression which can be a side effect and stopped for now. Will reintroduce at a later time when I am able to have a window to work through the side effects if that is what caused it.

Here's what drugs.com says:

Amantadine is an antiviral medication. It blocks the actions of viruses in your body.
* Amantadine is used to treat and to prevent influenza A (a viral infection). There may be some flu seasons during which amantadine is not recommended because certain flu strains may be resistant to this drug.
* Amantadine is also used to treat Parkinson's disease and "parkinson-like" symptoms such as stiffness and shaking that may be caused by the use of certain drugs. How amantadine works in these conditions is unknown.
* Amantadine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

I have never heard of this for fatigue. Side effects seem to be more drowsiness, etc, the opposite of what you would expect for a drug used for fatigue.

Glad it is working. Just curious myself if anyone else is taking this specifically for fatigue. Must be an off label use.

I have been on it off and on for about 12+years.What it helps me most with is that I dont get every cold or flu that comes with in a mile of me when I'm on it.

I just rejoined the group after being away for a few years.

Hi. Just got back from my latest apptmt with my LLMD and he added amantadine to my abx (biaxin + doxy). He said that it makes the cells more alkaline which improves the effectiveness of the abx. This is from Dr. Burrascano's treatment guidelines:

"The advanced macrolides and azalides such as azithromycin and clarithromycin can be difficult to tolerate orally due to their tendency to promote yeast overgrowth and poor GI tolerance at the high doses needed. As they have impressively low MBCs and do concentrate in tissues and penetrate cells, they theoretically should be ideal agents. However, initial clinical results were disappointing. It has been suggested that when Bb is within a cell, it is held within a vacuole and bathed in fluid of low pH, and this acidity may inactivate this class of antibiotics. Therefore, they are administered concurrently with hydroxychloroquine or amantadine, which raise vacuolar pH, rendering these agents much more effective. ... Results are excellent, but expect to see abrupt Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions."

I'll let you know how it goes, but if it helps the fatigue, I'm all for it.

I just came home from my LLMD with an added script for Provigil for fatigue. But I'm going to research it first.

I take Amantadine, but not for fatigue. My Dr. said it would help the other medications penetrate the cells better, making them more effective.

I took Provigil for about 6 months. It helped for awhile, then I stopped due to a change in insurance, and it became too expensive.

What's helping me more now for fatigue than the Provigil did, is an adjustment to higher dosages for my thyroid medication and especially the cortisol (these are the bio-identical ones).

Take care,

Hopeful 4-interesting- I am also hypothyroid, and taking synthroid, but according to my Primary Duck my recent increase in synthroid has me within normal levels-who prescribes your cortisol the bio identical ?

The best thing I have found for fatigue is Adrenal Plus made by Progena. I take 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. You can probably find it online. I get it from my Naturapath.

havne't heard of that one.

I take Provigil- (hi long lost Cob)- it's the only way i make it through a day upright.

i've had no side effects whatsoever, and can still nap during the day.

nothing "natural" has been able to keep me awake-- so yay meds....
