I sure do not want my youngest to stop babs treatment too soon. He has done 5 months of mepron/zith/art and I asked for longer treatment so now he is on malarone/biaxin XL/art.

What about others?????

Hey there..

Quick answer before I hit the bed.

I can't say for children.. but I do believe for what I've heard about grown-ups that it can be 9 months... or longer.

Good to know you asked for more and they are adding malerone. That is what the general idea was for Babesiosis treatment at the latest conferences. Treat with Mepron/Zith/Art.. then follow with malerone, etc.

MAYBE someone who was there.. besides me.. can check the literature and see if they mentioned duration in the notes from the book distributed.

Keep up the good work mom.

Yes, my Md llmd said that is what was mentioned at ILADS. My son is 20.

Thanks Tincup. A couple appointments ago my llmd's receptionist and I chatted about your good works!

9 months-Is that for chronic or any babesia. I start mepron next week, anything I need to know? Thanks

For me: about 8 months for the first round and 3-4 months again later on.

Nine months...that is rather long. I read on another post a while ago that four months was the minimum.

I am going into month six of treatment

Tincup or others, do you have an references?

I don't know the answer for this or have any references but I will just teel my own ongoing babs treatment.

I been on mepron-zithro-art for 27 months, along with this I had other abx for Lyme; at some point the zithro got switched to ketek but I had some stomach problems so my LLMD switched me back to zithro.
After 12 months of being on the mepron-zithro-art, my LLMD "graduated me" from mepron to malarone but I relapsed "badly and fastly"; so...... sooner that I wanted back to my lovely mepron.
After 18 months of being on the mepron-zithro-art, LLMD added primaquine and I am still on it.
I feel good, symptoms are just a few and I don't really know how long will/can I be on this combo; so far my body is tolerating very well and it had worked great for me.

Take care,

Besides how long were you treated for babs....a second question: When you stopped were you babs symptom free?

(I contacted a gal some months back whose teen was on mepron for 4 years and is doing well.)

When I stopped mepron -sort of, because I got switched to the malarone- I relapsed within two weeks, I was never totally symptom free. I haven't stopped the mepron since then.

There are over 20 different strains of babs and testing for only the two so if you are not improving then suspect babs as the culprit. Neither of my two sons tested positive through Igenex or MDL.

I am hearing that most llmds think 3-4 months treating with mepron is under-treating. Dr. B.'s PA told my other son they would not take him off babesiosis meds until after 5 months of treatment.

A few llmds in our area are now adding a malarone protocol afterwards. Many in my lyme group continue malarone treatment for months.

It is good to compare notes!

Ten months the first time. I just started retreating it again, however am not convinced I ever was rid of it the first time.

I think it depends a lot on the strain of babs you have, and the load you have in your body. I have been on babs treatment for 10 months, and don't see an end to it in the immediate future. Slow progress.

Good luck!

I just started my 8th month. And also don't see any end in sight yet. Symptoms persist and still testing positive. Getting rid of babs is a slow process and for me constant herxing.

First time in December 05, one round of Riamet. Ended all symptoms after having sweat as I never thought one could sweat (after Riamet, I can't remember if it was the first or second night).

But symptoms slowly came back after about 2 weeks in January 06.

Took many rounds of artemisinin, low doses (a month) with turmeric and astragalus, then high doses every 2 weeks. Then ended up with a strong air hunger (allergy or herx??), had to stop using artemisinin. But I still had babesia symptoms then(hot flushes, emotional instability, some night sweats, and the awful air hunger). That was around March.

In April, I started taking PC-Noni few drops, my naturopath said it works on cysts. After a few weeks on it plus the KMT, my symptoms faded. The juice noni never did anything, so I just took a few bottles before that and never more. But that tincture was strong.

Since about June, I have got no more babesiosis symptoms. Emotional change was drastic (no more that awful moody state).

I'm not sure what worked (and if I'm really rid of it, but I'm not on treatment for months and don't have symptoms so far).

So, in all, I treated about 6 months only!! But still knocking on wood! Babesiosis was the worst, as it made me so anxious. And the air hunger, I thought it was going to kill me. I took only Riamet as antibiotic, the rest were only herbs.
