Has anyone had side effects to bactrim that they know was not a herx? I've been on it for 7 days with a lot of issues - headaches, stabbing pains in my head, bad mouth sores, weakness, swollen glands and a general ill feeling...many of these issues are like my lyme symptoms. My doc said to try to stick it out another day or two to see if it's a herx or not but I'm scared now. Any thoughts?

Scottie,

I've taken numerous abx/drugs, and the only one that made me herx to the point that I felt like I was dying was Bactrim. It affected me within 2 days of starting it.

Wish I could help you decide whether or not to keep taking it, but I don't feel comfortable giving you medical advice. I did stop when I felt bad, even though my doc told me to keep taking it, partly because my throat was really sore and I couldn't bring myself to take those big horse pills.

Hope you feel better soon,
P

A herx or reaction.

I'm talking about side effects. I recognize that often with Lyme disease it's hard to tell if it's a side effect or herx but I feel pretty sure my reactions are side effects.

I just recently had a short run of this stuff. Take a look at the other things that Bactrim also can kill. Toxoplasma, Pneumocystis cari, these two are protozoaish in nature, not to mention what else it can kill off. With the way that our immune systems are struggling to keep all of the bugs that normally would be in check, some of what you went through could have been die off from other bugs. I was put on Bactrim to see if it would knock out the toxo and pneumocysits that popped up in me due to immune system not working so well. Well it worked but the head and eye pain was very intense. Any yes, batrim is a hard drug to take too. My doc switched me to malarone, much easier and this will also get at any lingering babs within this group of protozoas.

I am sure it is a herx so if you want to use democratic methods in reaching your decision we need more voters.

This is a sulfa drug and some people are allergic to sulfa. Yours does not sound like an allergic reaction. Have you read the side effects of bactrim? Do they match your symptoms? You might try googling bactrim to get more info than comes typically from the pharmacy with pills.

I got an allergic reaction to Bactrim immediately, it was hives and some shortness of breath. I had to stop taking it.

I'm not saying you would have this reaction if allergic, but these symptoms you describe sound like herxing to me.

Babs meds typically cause head and eye pain, perhaps it's dealing with that? Keep your LLMD informed.
